Malcolm Dunbar, 2016 Winner KOA Club Member of the Year, a true character of KOA, was a well
deserved accolade for him last year, for the 2 years he has been a member he has been a very active
one, along with his partner Julienne they have been helping out with various car events including our
recent Swap Meet last year, which he ran an unofficial raffle, in the end it helped raise funds for our new
Charity ‘Gemma’s Memorial Walk’ in correlation with the ‘Isabella and Marcus Brainstem Paediatric
Brainstem Tumour Fund’, I think this year we will make the raffle official, so Malcolm, GET ON IT!
He has just started up his own Mechanical Workshop recently called ‘Mal’s Garage’ which he says is
getting a fair bit of business, so this keeps him busy, if you want some mechanical work done, I’m sure
he would not mind putting up his mobile number 0414 937 245.

KOA
Presidents
Report
Feb 2017
Hi KOA Members,
We are now well into 2017 and the first General Mee=ng has just been held. Where does the
=me go?
I thought I would write this month about the obvious pride our membership has in our club. I
was talking to a prospec=ve member during the week and he stated that he was amazed to see
the pride shown by our members in the wearing of their club shirts and badges at our mee=ngs,
it was something he had not seen in other clubs. It got me thinking, when we go on cruises or to
car shows we are one of the very few clubs that has a dis=nc=ve “uniform” with stylish shirts,
jackets, caps, etc. We definitely do stand out and we are obviously being no=ced. No doubt our
interes=ng selec=on of cars helps also. Keep it up guys and girls, we do have a great club with
friendly, loyal and generous members, a clubhouse that is the envy of others and a rich heritage
that spans back to one of the oldest car clubs in the USA.
No doubt 2017 will be another great year for the club with many great events planned and
invites to come. Hope to see you at our next event.
Regards,
Craig

KOA MEMBERS,
MY CAR, MY GARAGE
I'd like you as a KOA members to please submit a story about your car, and your garage, not
matter what state your car or garage is in, tell us about it, what projects you have coming up,
I'm sure most members will be interested.
Email me your pics and story to [email protected]
Thanks Laurie Doyle for your story:
I have re-joined KOA after a few years’ absence, having recently retired from the Coast’s premier rental company
LTD Bus and Truck Rentals which I founded in 1999 and is now owned and operated by another KOA member
Glenn Mitchell.
Pictured are the classic vehicles owned by my wife, Troy and I.
First, is a 1957 Ansair Flxible Clipper coach converted to a motorhome.
This vehicle is number 100 of 131 built in Australia by Ansair, a division
of Ansett Transport Industries and operated in the Ansett Pioneer fleet.
We purchased her in 1988 with an estimated two million miles on the
clock, and as we have only added another three quarters of a million
kilometres she has really been on holidays for the last 28 years. A truly
magnificent machine and we are very proud of her.
Second, is a 1975 VW Kombi dual cab ute which underwent restoration this
year and is now on club registration. We have owned this Kombi for several
years and it was used as a desert basher. It has been over some extremely
rough and sandy tracks in its time, including the Anne Beadell Highway,
east to west from Coober Pedy and Googs track from Ceduna in the Great
Australian Bight. I’m sure it is enjoying its much more pandered lifestyle
now, as a show pony. We are now rebuilding a 1976 Kombi bus which we
will probably turn into a desert bus and we will be able to have a few more
home comforts in it over the dual cab.
Last, at this stage, is a 1964 Flxible Starliner we bought sight unseen from
a Lutheran Church in Clinton, near Baton Rouge, Louisiana USA. They
bought the coach in 1980 from a local mining company and used it as a
church transport bus until 2016. It has only travelled around two hundred
and eighty thousand miles and is in fantastic original condition. I drove it for
two thousand miles to Los Angeles California, to ship home and it ran
beautifully.
We are also members of the
Flxible Clipper Club of Australia
and Troy is the newsletter and
website editor. The web address is www.flxibleclipperclub.com.au.
Our home is on an acre block above Reedy Creek and I started with
one shed with a maintenance pit as a home for the Clipper. This has
now had two extensions and last year we built another one to house the
expanding collection, but I am not sure if either the Gold Coast Council
or the Finance Minister will agree to anymore.
Look forward to joining in the KOA club runs and meeting the members.

Longest Cruise in the World?
Part One
In early 1994 Levella and I (Milton) got married and set up
our home on the Gold Coast, a couple of years later we,
and a new baby girl Maddi (now 21), moved to Ballarat
Victoria to where my family had begun, and to kick off my
Bookbinding business, not long after we had our second
child Trent (now 18). Bookbinding business? Didn’t you
know, yes I am a Bookbinder, I restore old books, but thats
another story. Anyhow we moved back to the Gold Coast
just when our kids were hitting high school in 2008, to give
them a chance to live close to their other grandparents
who live on the Sunshine Coast.
A year prior to this I bought my 61 Cadillac, paid a deposit while it was on its voyage across from California, a
one owner car (the 94 year old owner could not drive it any longer) while he looked after it on the outside he
somehow never had much done anywhere else, but it drove out of the container in Melbourne and a few days
later I drove it home registered, to Ballarat.
So as I said we moved back to the Gold Coast at the end
of 2007, we drove a 3 ton truck up and back with what
house hold possessions we could not do without, and all
of my Bookbinding business stuff, then went back and did
several trips up and back with the Caddy, although the
engine was still at an almost original state other than a
Duel Fuel conversion, duel exhausts, and a customised
grille, train horn and custom smoothy rims. The poor 390
cube engine with three of the cylinders running less than
50% compression and a 3 inch crack in the high-rise inlet
manifold and using around 6 litres of oil on every trip up
and back, we finally got here, with not one break down. When we settled in I called in a mate who owned and
ran an engine building workshop with all the latest hi-tech machinery & offered (at cost) to rebuild my poor old
engine.
I joined KOA in early 2009 and quickly found a place I could help out as the Media Officer, first port of call our
new domain name and rebuilding the website, then it just flowed from there, being a member of the QLD
Cadillac Club, I found out that they had a Nation wide
event called the Cadillac Nationals, the one coming
up was in Bathurst for 2010, a have a couple of good
mates in Toowoomba that both own 61 Cadillacs as
well, so being that the 390 had just been fully rebuilt I
thought that this was a good time to start doing some
more long distance cruising, so I invited them to come
with us and cruise together to the Nationals in
Bathurst, only a 2000km return trip, so not very far.
While at the Bathurst Nationals I found out that the
next Caddy Nationals was a local one, in Toowoomba, so not far to travel to this one, but due to work
commitments and moving house I didn't even have the chance of going along, but I did find out that the next one
in 2014 was in Busselton Western Australia, this is the one I have to go to, its a long cruise, but we’re used to
that, thinking about it I was starting to wonder what it would be like to take a bunch of Caddy loving friends with
me, not in my Caddy, but get them to bring theirs along too, what could be better than to cruise the Aussie
highways with a bunch of friends in there classic Cadillacs, so the plans begin.

Longest Cruise in the World?
Part One (cont)
Thinking very seriously about this cruise, where do I start, ok start by making sure my 61 Caddy is in perfect
mechanical condition, ok, thats cool, this is already taken care of, except for one thing, time to rebuild my factory
4 speed auto, need to save my money here going to cost me 6k, ok, its not just your normal everyday tranny.
My mate in Toowoomba rang me to tell me that a local importer had a
Full Size Fibreglass Replica rear end of a 59 Cadillac, you know the
ones used to make a couch, well I contacted the guy and asked him
about it, he want $2,000 for it as it was quite unique, it came with 2
plastic replica white wall tires that now are on the wall at the club
house, and sat on a steel stand ready for a BBQ or Couch to be
inserted, I had a trailer in mind to carry all my stuff for the trip across
the Nullarbor, I told him about the trip and how it was a charity run and
in the end sold it to me for $800, so I drove straight to Toowoomba and
picked it up, on the way I dropped it off to a mates place near Yatala, he
was a metal worker and very good on a Mig welder, so he constructed
a full custom trailer chassis for me, got it to sit right and when towing it
anyone passing would do a double take for sure.
In the end what I wanted was a trailer that could carry extra gear including a double swag and enough stuff so
that our cruise from the east coast to the west coast would be comfortable as we did not want to fill the interior of
my Caddy as while I was planning the cruise I had a email from the German President of the Cadillac Club in
Germany, he was flying out to come along with us, so we told him he could travel with us, his name is Torsten
Loth and he and his dad have a huge collection of Cadillacs in Germany so many that Torsten did not even know
the last count of Cadillac they had, Torston’s favourite being his rare 59 Cadillac Brougham.
Here are some pics of the 59 Caddy trailer build, the story will continue next month of the ‘Longest Cruise in the
World’, so stay tuned, to hear about and see pics of this awesome cruise, till then, Milton & Levella Watkins.

All KOA Members, keep August 27th available in your calendar of events, this one is where we need
your participation, this event helps to keep KOA’s bank balance comfortable and gives $$$ to KOA’s
charity The Paediatric Brainstem Tumour Fund, it helps fund the future plans of KOA, so its all hands

to help this year. The flyer is below, and has been attached to many email and SMS’s sent out to you,
so please, share this with your friends and family, and tell them to share it also.

KOA MEMBERS, your Attention is Required, do you like your KOA Newsletter ‘Kustom News’?
So far these copies of ‘Kustom News’ can be kept as a part of the history of your car club, in the last 16
years of KOA we only have a few typed pages of the minutes of meetings to reflect on, wouldn't it be
nice to flick through some pages of a magazine to see info about your car club, its members, runs
we’ve been on, stories from members and what they have been up too, pictures in colour of what cars
we have seen and what cars members are working on, detailing the continued history of Kustoms of
Australia, Gold Coast, YOUR CAR CLUB. Maybe a picture of YOUR car on the front cover!
Well, after three Newsletters I am changing the format again, this year you will continue to receive the
KOA Newsletter ‘Kustom News’ that you already get electronically as a PDF file in an email each month
after the general meeting, I know what its like reading it off a computer screen, not real great, or maybe
your computer emails are not working so well and you miss seeing it.
This year, in addition of your digital copy, I have turned it into a professionally printed FULL COLOUR
glossy Magazine style for you to purchase, either like as subscription every 12 months, or you can
purchase a single copy from a particular month, at this point in time you will be looking at 11 issues per
year plus $2.00 postage, at $12.00 per issue, I know it seems a lot, but it costs around $6.00 to $10.00
(depending on the amount of pages printed) to print, fold and staple at the printers and then another
couple of bucks for postage, what ever else is left its for me, not that will not be much, a dollar here or
there, you would be surprised and shocked at how much time it takes to put this sort of thing together,
so at the moment, we are talking about 10’s of hours every month, but I will settle with a few bucks, but
you, as a member can help me to help you, you or someone you know may have a business they may
wish to advertise in ‘Kustom News’ with an audience of 120 members the right sort of business within
the pages of our magazine will do well, and this will help me to get paid a few more dollars for my time,
so any help here would be great, and over time will continually improve the ‘Kustom News’ and its
contents, this Jan/Feb issue is already close to 30 pages.
If you would like a back dated copy of the magazine I can do this, the price will be $10.00 per copy and
I will bring them along to the next general meeting. I can post them but it will be POA. So please if you
would like to subscribe or to purchase a single copy get onto me asap, for a full 12 month subscription
to 11 copies per year posted to your address will cost $132.00 for the year 2017 with the Jan/Feb copy
being the first and the Dec copy being the last.
After you have collected the
first 12 months of the
magazine, as a bookbinder I
can offer you a discount
rate to actually bind the
collection together into
yearly volumes if you would
like, this would be a
professional hard covered
book with the title on the
spine and front cover and
would look great with all
your car stuff at home.
Email me at
[email protected]
if you would like to start a
subscription, I will then give
you an option on how to
pay.

Mudgeeraba Heritage Centre Australia Day Celebrations
26th Jan 2017 - Pics and story by Rod Liefman
A great day for socialising with our club members, viewing the display of KOA members cars as well those from
our neighbours The Antique Car Club.
Check out the Pix. Several standout models for me included the Mainline Ute in really good nick. A more
unusual vehicle was the 57 Chevy station wagon converted into a pickup. Check out Chris Hage explaining
‘under the bonnet’ of his late dads’ 48-215 NEDLOH drag car to Jeanne. (She grew up in her Dads’ Auto
workshop, so no stranger to multiple carbies, extractors etc.)
The Wood Turners had a nice display as usual, as did the Railway Society and other Olde Worlde organisations.
Brass band to entertain us plus the Saluting the Colours Ceremony was spot on once again.
Really good to see Ron Whelan out and about and looking well. Ditto John Park. Nice to see Bill Budd (of the
Car Collection/ Museum Palm Beach) pop in to say howdy now that he is a member.
Thanks to our Committee and members for coming along in good numbers and helping to make a great showing
of our club. RodL.
