PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD
PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD
2020 marks the start of our College’s 51st year. This is also a year of
an unprecedented disruption of school and schooling which we were
accustomed to. All stakeholders of our school community have had
to adjust to an online mode of teaching and learning enacted outside
of the school building. I am glad our teachers and students have been
able to exercise mental and behavioural flexibility to adjust quickly to a
changed environment.
Despite the change thrusted upon us, we must remain steadfast to
provide our students an education that helps them to seek to know how
to think, not just what to think. We must continue to focus on educating
the heart and the mind, and endeavour to instil in our students the
CARE values and principles that our school has promulgated. We must
pride ourselves to help our students grow and develop into adults with
a deep sense of service to the community.
As we complete 50 years of service and embark on our 51st year, we
should take heed that success comes to those who work hard and
stays with those who don’t rest on the achievements of the past. We
must continue to strive and to serve with honour.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our stakeholders. We
are fortunate to have a supportive and committed School Advisory
Committee, dedicated teachers, concerned and co-operative parents.
Service with Honour

of her selfless care towards others. Moreover, her ability to perform
well in both her academic pursuits and her co-curricular activities
has made her an inspiration among her peers.
Shi En is exemplary in her role as student leader, for she possesses
the moral courage to do the necessary, and is unafraid of making
unpopular decisions. With excellent perception and interpersonal
skills, she is able to garner full support from her peers and

Shi En is a highly dependable individual and executes her duties
with calm and composure. Her leadership led her team to being
awarded the ‘B’ Division Girls championship, which was a hard-
earned achievement as it was the first time in years that they have
won the championship.
Shi En also contributed actively to the College and the wider
community in numerous ways. She was one of the key organising
members for SG4Diversity, an event that advocates the inclusion
and integration of people with diverse abilities. Her thoughtfulness
towards others allowed her to foresee and prevent many possible
issues that the physically disabled may face, allowing them to
participate in the SG4Diversity Festival safely. As the VIA advocate
for her class, she collaborated with Whampoo South RC and led
her class to participate in kidsread@KolamAyer, a weekly story-
telling programme.
A high achiever who maintains her humility, Shi En is the befitting
representation of National Junior College’s desired student
outcomes, truly embodying the college motto Service with Honour.

JUNIOR HIGH ALL-ROUND EXCELLENCE AWARD
ANDREA SIBY
Andrea Siby is an outstanding academic performer and widely-
recognised inspiration both in and out of the classroom. Consistently
at the top of her cohort, she displays not only the insightfulness,
depth and breadth of thinking, but the diligence, tenacity, resilience
to achieve her best. Andrea is exemplary in her earnest learning
attitude. A dynamic force in the classroom, her presence impacts
lessons, not least due to her active participation. Andrea makes
every effort to engage her classmates with humorous remarks to
draw those with flagging interest back into the lessons. She asks
incisive questions and initiates class discussions, often reflecting
critical thought and drawing connections across disciplines.
Andrea always looks out for the best interests of others. In her
role as a Peer Support Leader, Andrea has left an impression on
those she has mentored. Her patient and nurturing mentorship is
all-encompassing, as can be seen from at least one past instance,
where she not only arranged regular personal tutoring sessions
with an academically-struggling Junior High 1 but worked with his
teacher to provide more targeted learning support. That the junior
student made improvement was not the most marked outcome. His
increased ability for self-management was also noted by his teacher.
This is but one example of Andrea’s maturity and understanding of
holistic education.
In the midst of all these responsibilities, Andrea remains actively
involved in CCA and school activities. She was one of the main
cast members in the NJC50 Musical, served as the President of the
Choir (Junior High wing). Dealing with hiccups during her term of
office with characteristic optimism, she faced challenges head-on,
showing the ability to work with others in a team, and the willingness
to learn from mistakes. Furthermore, Andrea readily serves when
and where there is a need whether it is a call for manpower help at
CCA or school level.
Such a student with her numerous and varied contributions to
her community must surely be acknowledged with this award, as
befitting one so praised and admired in the NJC community.
08

Crystal is the epitome of an outstanding Arts student –
analytical, perceptive, and every inch a critical thinker.
Crystal demonstrates astounding metacognition, and is
able to be reflective not just about her work, but also the
process by which she arrives at the outcome. She is able to
question her own thinking, internalize and act on feedback
to improve, and apply her learning across different topics
and subjects.
She has been lauded as an exemplary student by her
teachers, who credit her for being highly motivated,
enthusiastic in learning, and having a keen eye for detail.
A highly perceptive thinker, she is able to quickly grasp
and engage with complex ideas well. She does not accept
answers as they are, but always questions them until she
has wrestled thoroughly with these ideas and arrived
at her own logical and sound conclusion. The ability to
engage in this process makes her a strong humanities
student, and her essays are a treat to read. She got along
well with her peers, often engaging them in discussion,
and elevating the quality of thinking in the classroom.
Not only did she exhibit great discipline and focus in
managing her heavy commitments, Crystal was also fully
committed in all her pursuits. Crystal was an excellent
Humanities Scholar, driving much of the research process
and other projects by drawing up deadlines, ensuring
that they were adhered to, and facilitating the discussions
among the team. She was also deeply engaged in college-
wide activities – as the Softball captain and an Orientation
Group Leader, Crystal made sure that she gave back to the
community. In all her roles, Crystal was well-respected
both by her peers and her teachers.

the development of Chinese orchestral music in the

for his peers and juniors in the College’s Chinese
Orchestra and Guzheng Ensemble. For instance, he
reiterated the importance of being alert and aware
of issues from other sections during combined
practices, so that every member can understand how
all the sections can better work together to produce

At the national level, Gary represented Singapore in the biennial
Southeast Asian Games in December 2019, DanceSport category, and

THE SAC SPORTS EXCELLENCE AWARD
TAN WEI XUAN RACHEL
Rachel has been the captain of the basketball team since Junior
High 2. She sets an example for her teammates by going all
out during training and utilises her experiences to improve her
leadership capabilities. In her first year as captain, her team
successfully became the 1st C Division team in NJC’s history to
clinch the Zonal Title. She managed to qualify for the National
U16 team in Junior High 3. Through this opportunity, Rachel was
exposed to different forms of training and competitions within
Singapore, allowing her to effectively hone her basketball skills.
The experience paid off, as in the subsequent B Division in Junior
High 4, she managed to lead her team to defend the school’s
3rd consecutive Zonal Champions title, and to once again
create history by being the first NJC B Division team to make it
to the National Top 8. In the same year, Rachel was chosen to
be part of the team representing Singapore at the 10th ASEAN
School Games 2018. The experience and exposure to overseas
competition was a real eye-opener for her, where she met with
opponents from neighbouring countries who were much more
skilled and physically adept. They brought the game to a whole
new level for her, compared to Singapore’s National School
Games. It was through this experience that Rachel realised that
there was much for her to improve on, giving her newfound
motivation to train even harder to better herself.
In 2019, Rachel led her team to clinch a spot in the Top 4
placings of the ‘A’ division National School Games. She was also
fortunate to be granted another shot at the 11th ASEAN School
Games. Rachel utilised it to better train and improve her game
in preparation to face faster and stronger opponents. Her hard
work paid off as she performed well on the court, displaying
much more composure and confidence compared to the year
before. Though having improved and come a long way from
where she started, Rachel still remains humble and continues
to improve in the sport that she loves so much.

THE SAC SPORTS EXCELLENCE AWARD
AGNES LEE YIN FAYE
An extremely committed basketball player, Agnes started
playing basketball in Junior High 2. Her team made history
and broke the school record by being the first NJC C Division
team to win the Zone Champions title in the 2016 C Division
South Zone National School Games. In Junior High 4, Agnes
started to serve as a Vice-captain, where she committed
most of her time to training hard to improve herself in
order to set an example for her other teammates and even
juniors. She assisted her captain in pushing her teammates
to their limits, and kept close relationships with her
teammates to provide assistance both on and off the court.
In 2018, her team emerged Top 8 in The B Division National
Championships, breaking the school’s record once again.
In an intense preliminary round in nationals, Agnes was the
Top Scorer in the crucial game that decided whether they
could proceed to the next round. With her contribution, the
team sealed the victory and advanced to the Top 8. In 2019,
her team also achieved 4th in the A Division National School
Games.
Subsequently, Agnes was selected to represent Singapore
in the 11th ASEAN School games in 2019. This experience
allowed her to meet better and stronger opponents from the
neighbouring countries, and improve tremendously in the
sport. Agnes makes the effort to pass on what she had learnt
to her teammates: she spends her free time communicating
and interacting with juniors to help them whenever they
require help, and teach them basketball tactics. Her passion
for contributing to her teammates and juniors’ personal
growth extends beyond the sport as she also actively helps
them in other aspects such as their academic work.
With the opportunity to serve as a leader and represent
her school and nation, Agnes has realised that the value of
her CCA goes beyond just the sport. She is determined to
continue to lead her team with exuberance in her final year,
as a vice-president, teammate, senior, and role model.
17
THE STEPHEN LOH SPORTS EXCELLENCE AWARD
GAN JIE HUI
As Captain of the A Division Girls Canoeing team, Jie Hui
was an exemplary role model and servant leader. When
everyone was tired or not on task, she would find that extra
strength to help out as well as to motivate and encourage
them. Her level-headedness and rational thinking enable
the team to pull through any crisis. She recognised her
role to ensure all the exco members run things smoothly
and no one in the team was left behind. This is not an
easy task as the NJC team consists of 6 Levels with more
than 100 members. Under her leadership, her team
represented Singapore in the 14th IDBF World Dragon Boat
Championships which clinched 2nd position in, 500m and
2000m and first place in 200m.
She always has an eye out for the physical and emotional
well-being of her teammates and makes sure that the new
members were able to integrate with the team. In her
role as Land Training IC in 2019, she modified programmes
such that everyone, experienced or new, could still train
together effectively to the best of their abilities. She would
catch up with them before or after training sessions and
lend them a helping hand whenever possible.
Service to Community is something close to her heart as
well. As part of the Activities committee in the NJ Youth
GiveBack team, she planned a series of VIA activities
in 2018 during Service Learning Week as part of the
GENGRIT programme for IP SH1 students. She planned
activities and liaised with external senior activity centers
to ensure activities suited the needs of the elderly. She is
also involved in her CCA VIA for the Senior High member
with MINDS. She took the initiative to provide assistance
whenever there was a need despite not being in the main
committee. As an A Div member, she also chose to help
out the B Div VIA project as well when they visited the
elderly and made CNY decorations for them. A servant
leader who inspires others, she was fondly given the
nickname “Gan-dhi” by her peers.
18
THE STEPHEN LOH SPORTS EXCELLENCE AWARD
KHO RUI-EN
Rui-en’s larger than life personality is a poetic contrast to her
small stature. In a sport where size and physique matters, she
is one of the fastest paddlers and one of the strongest minds in
her team. She set high standards for herself and her team mates
and pushes them to reach their potential. Rui En never fails to
demonstrate the importance of perseverance, determination
and hard work. Her great tenacity is seen during training
sessions and competitions. She was part of the Junior Team
that represented Singapore in the 14th IDBF World Dragon Boat
Championships which clinched 2nd position in, 500m and
2000m and first place in 200m.
Rui-en’s role in the team has been indispensable. She has taken
on many leadership positions such as the B Division Captain,
A Division Vice Captain and C Division Quarter Mistress
(QM). As a QM, she managed and maintained the team’s fleet
of 80 boats and equipment. Not only she was meticulous in
managing tasks, she was able to manage the members with tact
and firmness. She ensured that the junior and understudy for
QMs were involved and could demonstrate the skills required.
As a Captain, she keeps an eye over the physical and emotional
well-being of her teammates and makes sure that the juniors
and new members are able to integrate with the team. When
she finishes her training, she encourages her team mates by
paddling alongside them and patiently guides her juniors even
if means rescuing them when they capsize again and again. She
understands the value of using teachable moments to draw out
and talk about the values that they can learn to or to point out
mistakes that were made and what could be learnt from them.
Rui-en’s service to others shines through strongly. She is
always ready to volunteer for ad-hoc help such as DSA Trials
or setting up of exam venues. She has spent hours cleaning
up the premises of Eunos MINDS, stepped in when needed to
organise Christmas parties for the MINDS, bringing much joy to
their clients.

THE ELIZABETH POEY INSPIRATION AND COURAGE (EPIC) AWARD
The first awardee is Greenlink,
who has stood strong in their
efforts to push for environmental
education and promote
conservation in NJC. Passionate
in their beliefs of an eco-friendly
College steeped in sustainable
practices, each Greenlink leader
oversees a component of ‘green’
action. Entirely student-led
and initiated, the team works
together to plan and propose
the various programmes like
the recycling of plastic, paper
and electronics, as well as
vermicomposting. Greenlink
has also been enterprising in its
initiatives, conducting the same
vermicomposting workshops
for various schools ranging from
kindergartens to secondary
schools and even the general
public.
Our other awardee is the Siemply iReaplacable
team of OVIA Siem Reap 2019, whose predecessors
have worked with Sambour Primary of Siem Reap,
Cambodia since 2015. Focusing on empowering
the Sambour Primary students, our NJC students
have been working on lessons and programmes
that aim to educate and expand their horizons. The
team planned activities that harness the strengths
of the Sambour students, as an exemplification
of its belief to empower the Cambodians rather
than to see them as mere recipients of assistance.
Ultimately, this recognition of the universal human
experience, alongside the willingness to lend a
helping hand, makes this team deserving of the
EPIC award!

Labwork with buddies from Ritsumeikan High School, Kyoto SCIENCE AND RESEARCH
and Ritsumeikan Keisho High School in Hokkaido
2019 was a dynamic and fruitful year for students in the Research
Exchange Programme, Mahidol Wittayanusorn School (Thailand) Programme. Through the Research Programme, students
deepened their knowledge in Science, Mathematics, Computing,
Sharing of Research findings, Exchange programme with Sports Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, learning the
Suzanne Cory High School, Australia ropes of research in College, with scientists at local research and
academic institutes, and in collaboration with peers from local
and international high schools under the International Research
Exchange Programme.
Beyond competitions, symposiums and talks, Research@NJC
offers learning opportunities for students in other local schools
under the South Zone as the Centre of Excellence for Science and
Technology. With the help of our Vice Principal, Mr Alfred Tan
and the Astronomy Club, our very own High-Resolution Solar
Research Observatory (HISRO) was launched on 31 July 2019.
Three high-resolution solar telescopes, locally designed and built
with commercially-off-the-shelf parts from different parts of the
world, are situated outside NJC’s lecture theatres where it affords
easy access to students for research work.
This year also saw a total of 134 NJC students from JH2 to SH2
presented a total of 77 research projects in the the Singapore
Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) 2019, clinching 3 Gold, 3
Silver, 5 Bronze, 7 Merit and 11 Special awards. Tan Yee Lin (18SH17)
was selected to represent Singapore at the Intel International
Science and Engineering Fair 2019 held in Phoenix, Arizona, USA
and clinched the 3rd Award in the Category of Microbiology. In
addition, Yee Lin was awarded the Most Outstanding Junior College
Science Student Award 2019, jointly sponsored by World Scientific
Publishing Company (WSPC) and the Imperial College Alumni
Association of Singapore (ICAAS). She also represented Singapore
in the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar (SIYSS) in
Dec 2019, held in conjunction with the Nobel Prize Presentation
Ceremony. Other award winners include Wang Haiyi (18SH05),
who won the first prize in the Singapore Junior Water Prize, and
subsequently went on to represent Singapore in the Stockholm
Junior Water Prize. Emma Tan Xiu Wen (20SH06) and Ho Jia Yi
Jenevieve (20SH05) were the only Singapore team within the top-
20 global finalists for Google Science Fair 2019.

BIOLOGY GAMES DAY
BiologyGames Dayis an annual
showcase of educational
games designed by our Junior
High 3 students as part of their
Authentic Transfer Task. It was
a fun and engaging afternoon
for our Junior High 2 students
who learnt Biology concepts
through these science-
infused games designed by
their seniors.
2020 STAR SYMPOSIUM
Due to the COVID-19 situation, the 2020 STaR
Symposium was modified to a series of parallel
seminars held in different venues allocated by
research field categories. To avoid mixing of
students across schools, the event was attended
by only NJC students
Nevertheless, we were heartened by the turn out
of research mentors, and especially that of our
Guest-of-Honour, Professor Ong Wei Yi, Director,
Electron Microscopy Unit, Yong Loo Lin School of
Medicine, National University of Singapore.
FURTHER MATHEMATICS SEMINAR
On 25 March 2019, NJC Mathematics Department organised the inaugural Further Mathematics Seminar and a total of over 100
students taking H2 Further Mathematics from various Junior Colleges attended the seminar. Our guest of honour, Dr Tan Liang
Soon, gave a talk on Avascular Tumour Model with Random Variation which gave student and teacher participants insights on
how Mathematical modelling is useful and applicable in determining the growth of tumour. Students were engaged in group
work, collaborating with peers from other colleges, to solve a real world problem on the spot, which was truly a delight to see.

HUMANITIES PROGRAMME
The NJC Humanities Department seeks to nurture life-long learning attitudes and skills in our students through both classroom
and real-life learning experiences. As such, below are the various ways in which this was realised.
1. CITIZENSHIP 2. CRITICAL THINKING
(i) The Singapore Bicentennial Experience (i) NLB Prove It! Competition -
- rooting ourselves in the richness of our students are challenged to seek and
700 years of history process information, and hone their
information literacy skills.
(ii) MOE History Challenge - where
2 of our students were subsequently
selected for the MOE History Talent
Development Programme!
(iii) NUS Geography Challenge -
where students are engaged and
empowered on local and world issues
3. CROSS CULTURAL SKILLS /
GLOBAL AWARENESS
(i) Humanities Integrated Programme
study trip to Shanghai - where our
students did a comparative study on
creative placemaking efforts in Shanghai
and Singapore.
4. ENTREPRENEURIAL DARE

SINGAPORE BUDGET LESSONS
To understand the Singapore Budget and its importance in our national development, the Economics Department conducts
Singapore Budget lessons annually for all NJC students from JH1 through to SH2. Through various games, role-playing activities
and class discussions, students engage in these lessons to make sense of this year’s Singapore Budget. The students have the
opportunity to take on the perspectives of the government in decision-making, and justify the key initiatives proposed in the
budget. They are also educated on the budget process and underpinnings of the Singapore Budget in general. At the end of each
lesson, students are tasked to reflect on the impact of the Singapore Budget on the different stakeholders in the economy. These
stakeholders include themselves, making their learning authentic and meaningful.
TWINNING PROGRAMME WITH
CHU VAN AN HIGH SCHOOL
National Junior College’s Twinning Programme with Chu
Van An High School (CVAHS) commenced in 2007 with
the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between
the two schools, under the support of both Ministries of
Education. It was just last year in 2019 that NJC extended
the hosting programme to a homestay experience for
CVAHS students. This allowed CVAHS students a first-
hand experience of ‘life in Singapore’ through the daily
routines of the hosting family. Visits to Monetary Authority
of Singapore and cultural sites also promoted learning of
the operations of Singapore’s monetary system and our
heritage respectively.
In return, our own NJCians also had an eye-opening and
fruitful experience in Hanoi when they visited CVAHS at the
end of the year. They participated in an interactive seminar
facilitated by a Professor in British University of Vietnam,
learning Game Theory concepts such as the Prisoner’s
dilemma and second-price auctions. Students also visited
Hanoi’s tourist attractions such as the Old Quarters and
Sword Lake to learn more about the rich heritage of
Vietnam.
Indeed, participants of both countries have benefited much
from this programme as they continue to forge strong
friendships with one another.

AESTHETICS PROGRAMME
In 2019 the college Aesthetics Programme saw
a continued integration of enhancing the school
curriculum with aesthetics to bring about a more
robust education for the students. The JH2s
were introduced to Animal Farm as part of their
Language Arts curriculum, and were treated to
a theatrical performance and a workshop to
enhance their experience.
To inculcate the ideation of Aesthetics being ever
present in our everyday lives, the Aesthetics
Committee looked to working collaboratively with
the CCE committee to integrate aesthetics as part
of character education. The JH3s were given the
opportunity to attend the annual Chingay Parade,
where they learnt the historical and cultural
background of this unique street parade during
CCE. Lesson packages were developed too for
National Day.
As part of our NJ50 celebration, the Aesthetics
Committee and Department were heavily
involved in different aspects of it – for example
NJ50 Art Jam, and the development of CCE lesson
packages for College Day for the whole college.
We also introduced assembly programmes for
the Senior High 1 students as part of their post-
promotional examinations. The series of assembly
programmes were an introduction to the Arts
by the faculty members of NUS’s Yong Siew Toh
Conservatory of Music to viewtheArts as a possible
career option, exposing them to performances by
the T’ang Quartet and professional ballet dancers
from the Singapore Dance Theatre.
We aim to continually bring the Arts to the college
population as we develop our students to be more
culturally aware and more aesthetically refined.

YEAR IN REVIEW “My first sushi! I eat what I roll.” (Life Skills Series by PAACT)
BOARDING PROGRAMME “Step 2 for Reflective Learning: Be true to ourselves.”
(Principal’s Conversations)
Guided by the Boarding Philosophy and Boarding Thrusts, sustained
and refreshed, NJC’s signature JHBP has been empowering students “I look smart in my ironed school uniform.”
since 2009 to experience the Joy of Learning through a wide range of (Life Skills Series by PAACT)
authentic programmes.
To deepen students’ engagement with experiential learning, all JH1s
to JH4s participated in personal development workshops ranging
from Fine Dining Etiquette to Personal Image Mastery; partook
in an enriching aesthetics curriculum across cultures and forms;
planned, strategized, and collaborated in their learning during their
Night Adventures; explored the wonders of coding via a progressive
series of Microbits Workshops – designed and supported by all
departments.
To empower students with essential life skills, all JH1s to JH4s had
hands-on sessions ranging from Basic Housekeeping to Needlework
to Healthy Meals Preparation – rendered possible by our sustained
strong partnership with PAACT and parent volunteers.
To strengthen students’ emotional resilience and character
development, all JH1s to JH4s learnt and expanded their ability
to express their emotions more precisely, acquired the skills for
Reflective Learning and problem solving, applied strategies to enhance
their self-regulation – facilitated by the developmental curriculum of
Principal’s Conversations and House Masters’ Mentoring.
To make learning authentic, Language Arts, CCE and NE were
integrated as all JH3s embarked on a learning journey around
Bukit Timah, deploying their senses to carefully observe the sights,
sounds, smells and textures of our surroundings, and especially
paying attention to the conversations they hear from people living
in and around the neighbourhood. Through the learning journey,
JH3 students developed the skill of gathering information through
observation, projection, empathy and use of imagination to eventually
produce an authentic and entertaining short script which can easily
be recognised as an accurate representation of an aspect of life in
Singapore. Indeed, the outcome is A Slice of Life - achieved despite
the Covid 19 disruption to the boarding programme. Let us celebrate
our resilience!
