UAP AUSTRALIA CHAPTER

HISTORY

October 2016 when Ar. Dan Membrere and wife Ar. Hazel Aguilar migrated in Australia from Singapore.
They were searching for community of architects whom they can communicate regarding the professional
practice of Architecture in Australia. They came to realize that United Architects of the Philippines is not in
existence in Australia.

Year 2017, they worked in the same company where they met another Filipino architect, Richard
Gumabao who joined them in this endeavour. The three had the vision of establishing UAP- Australia and
New Zealand chapter as an avenue to reach out to other Filipino architects in Australia and New Zealand.
The merged concept came about due to the minority of registered architects in both countries who are
interested in joining the organization.

Ar. Hazel Aguilar hailed from UAP Bulacan chapter while Ar. Dan Membrere was from UAP Manila Centrum
but most of the architects they know who migrated in Australia and New Zealand were all from Singapore.
This was the main reason why Ar. Hazel approached the former UAP-Singapore chapter President, Ar. Joan
Tabinas to sponsor the formation of Australia chapter with the assistance of then Vice President and now
the current chapter President of UAP – Singapore, Ar. Mark Lester Valignota. This undertaking was blessed
by UAP-Singapore’s mother chapter, the Manila Centrum in coordination with the past chapter president
Ar. John Lemuel LLacuna. On the other hand, architects from New Zealand were gathered by their former
officemates in Singapore, Ar. Lini Grace Agan Con-el and Ar. Desire Bonotan Sitchon.

The first attempt to charter UAP Australia and New Zealand was in 2018 but did not fall into fruition due to
the lack of members that were able to comply with the requirements for chartering. There were several
challenges in pursuing the plan, mainly due to the loss of interest to continue their careers as architects
because of the compliances required to practice the architectural profession in Australia and NZ whereby
it is preferable to graduate from a local and internationally recognised school, in order to get endorsement
to practice by the local architectural organisations. Secondly, there are constraints to physically bond and
plan for the chartering as Australia, with New Zealand combined, is the largest continent and its
demographical constraints have led to some limitations to expedite the processing and exchange of
paperwork for chartering. The positive outcome of this limitation, however, have realised that distance nor
time can hinder the process of chartering as the group have risen above and beyond, and learned to use
the technologies available, to keep up with the changing times brought about by physical distance, and
later on the COVID-19 pandemic, hence have constituted to the continuation of the chapter formation.

2019 was the rebirth of the formation of Australia and New Zealand chapter with more Architects
immigrated from Philippines, Singapore, and other countries. With this revamp, Ar. Hazel began expanding
the search for volunteers to represent each state of Australia and New Zealand. A group of coordinators
was created. They planned activities such as lecture series that the formation group has hosted with an
aim to attract members to join the organization. Group chats each state was also created to promote
camaraderie among members that live within a state. Virtual meetings with the volunteers were also held.
These steps indeed increased the number of Architects who joined the chapter formation despite the
worldwide pandemic.

The campaign was strengthened with the help of National Past President, Ar. Medeliano Roldan and B1’s
District Director, Ar. Louisito Domalaon who helped put forward the chapter formation to UAP’s National
Board of Directors.

Under NBD Resolution no. 44, FY 2020-2021, the formation of UAP Australia under Regional District B1 as
endorsed by the Commission on Internal Affairs has now finally approved.

It is indeed a long journey but may this history marks the contribution of Filipino Architects in Australia and
New Zealand in our noble organization, the United Architects of the Philippines, as we expand through
these regions in the coming years.

LOGO RATIONALE

Main feature of UAP Australia logo is our
UAP logo.

It is a well-known fact that kangaroos are the
symbol of Australia. It is the first image that
springs into someone’s mind when thinking
about Australia. The hopping kangaroo
characterizes the organization and country to
keep moving forward.

It is noticeable that one of the legs of the
kangaroo is a ‘boomerang’ which is an
internationally recognized symbol of Australia.
The integration of boomerang is in respect for
Aboriginal people. For them, the boomerang
is a symbol of cultural endurance and a
tangible link to their long presence in this
continent.

UAP, Australia and New Zealand colours are well
presented with the UAP logo more pronounced.
The proposed logo is an integration of UAP
logo, Australian flag, Philippine flag, kangaroo
and boomerang.
UAP Australia logo was designed and
conceptualized by Ar. Dan Carlvin Membrere.
