WHAT IS LETTER KNOWLEDGE?

Letter Knowledge is one of the early literacy skills that is important
for children to have in order to learn to read. Letter Knowledge is
knowing that the same letter can look different, that letters have
names and are related to sounds. It is divided into four aspects which
are letter recognition, letter naming, letter sound-knowledge and
letter writing.

JUSTIFICATION

I had chosen three materials that can be used to assess the students in letter knowledge skill
which are the worksheet for letter writing, a storybook titled Charlotte’s Web by E.B White, and
assessment checklist. Firstly, the worksheet that I had prepared consists of dots of lowercase and
uppercase letters that let the students identify and recognize the shape of the letters. It is a
suitable activity to teach the beginner students how to write and know letters. I chose this
worksheet because I know it can help my students to learn to write the letters and remember the
sequence.

Secondly, for the storybook, I had listed various books but I chose this one because it helps
assess the students in letter knowledge and it is easy to read and suitable with their level of
proficiency. The illustrations help in gaining the attention of students to read and learn the letter
together.

The last material is an assessment checklist. This checklist is divided into four aspects which
are letter recognition, letter naming, letter sound-knowledge, and letter writing. It helps the
teacher to assess the students into different aspects under letter knowledge literacy skill. It also
has the column for the teachers to observe and state the problems of the students and think of a
way to overcome it. This can enhance a teacher's observation skill and students’ letter knowledge
skill.
