4.0 CHAPTER
4.1 CHAPTER 1: EARLY LIFE AND FAMILY
Tan Sri P. Ramlee PSM, AMN was gifted artistically from birth. After 25 years of effort in the
arts, he finally found success in Malaysia and Singapore as a singer, songwriter, musician, actor, film
director, and well-known film producer. Ramli bin Puteh @ Teuku Zakaria Teuku Nyak Puteh, often
known by his stage as P. Ramlee, was born in Penang on March 22, 1929, on a Friday (the morning of
Aidilfitri). In Counter Hall, Penang (now known as Jalan P. Ramlee), he was born in his grandmother's
home, which is now the P. Ramlee Museum. In 1925, in Kubang Buaya, Butterworth, his father, Teuku
Nyak Puteh bin Teuku Karim from Lhokseumawe, Aceh, married Che Mah Hussein. Prior to the start
of World War II, he attended Francis Light School, Kampung Jawa Melayu School, and Penang Free
School before transferring to Tan Sri P. Ramlee National School in November 2011.
FIGURE 1: P. RAMLEE - SEPANJANG RIWAYATKU, 1998 P Ramlee Birthplace is the quaint wooden house in Penang where Tan Sri P. Ramlee (1929-
ACCESSION FIGURE: 1998/0010402W 1973) was born on 22 March 1929. The information board outside describes how P.Ramlee's father,
Puteh bin Karim, and his uncle, Rejab bin Hussain, erected this nipah roofed house with hardwood
floors in 1926. The street where it is located was once known as Caunter Hall, but has since been
renamed Jalan P.Ramlee. It was constructed from reclaimed wood from the former family home on
Lorong Yahudi (now called Jalan Zainal Abidin). The home has been repaired and is currently managed
by Malaysia's National Archives.

Family
P. Ramlee has had three marriages. P. Ramlee created his first household at that time with one of the actor's daughter; Junaidah Daeng Haris,
his intended spouse, was married in 1950 and divorced in 1954. After then, they had two children, Mohamad Nasir and Arfan. P. Ramlee's female
friends fell in love with him for various reasons. When he was still unknown, his first wife Junaidah fell in love with P. Ramlee. P. Ramlee married
Noorizan Mohd Noor on February 6, 1955, following a divorce in 1954. However, their union could not endure for very long. They split up in 1961.
Noorizan, a royal relatives from Perak who was prepared to leave the palace world for the man she loved, was P. Ramlee's second wife. Norizan, on
the other hand, had higher expectations for their union, but P. Ramlee committed his life and their marriage to his acting profession. On November 21,
1961, P. Ramlee married Salmah Ismail (Saloma), and they remained together till the end of their lives. Saloma fell in love with P. Ramlee for who
he was as a person, an artist, and an everyday person and became his soulmate until his passing.
P. Ramlee has many children that he takes care of but only two are his biological children from his marriage to Junaidah, namely Nasir and
Arfan. His children help him a lot in his work such as being a child background singer (for example the song Tolong Kami Bantu Kami from the movie
3 Abdul) and additional child actors (for example Sazali who acted as a farm worker's son in Anak Bapak). Here are the children he has taken care of:

Sazali : Anak angkat (lahir 1958)

4.2 CHAPTER 2: EARLY EDUCATION
FIGURE 6: P. RAMLEE - SEPANJANG RIWAYATKU, 1998
ACCESSION FIGURE: 1998/0010402W
P. Ramlee received his early education at Kampung Jawa Melayu School (known as Tan Sri P. Ramlee National School from November 2011)
as well as at Francis Light School and then at Penang Free School until the outbreak of the Second World War. P. Ramlee has made a point of
showcasing his aptitude for acting and singing ever since he was a student. During the Japanese occupation of Penang from 1942 to 1945, his studies
at the Penang Free Academy were suspended, and he enrolled in the Japanese navy school (Kaigun Gakko). During this time, he also learned the
fundamentals of music and how to sing Japanese songs from his instructor, Hirahe-san. After the war, he began taking music lessons, which enabled
him to understand musical notations.
P. Ramlee began playing the ukulele before switching to the guitar and violin with the help of Mr. Kamaruddin (brass band leader at Penang
Free School). He joined Sinaran Bintang Sore and later Orkes Teruna Sekampung. He won Radio Penang's 1947 singing competition, when he was
named Malaya's Leading Singer. He began his name with the letter "P" (for Puteh) upon entering the competition, and he went as P. Ramlee till the
end of his life. P.Ramlee's debut film, "Chinta," was released in 1948, and he played the villain and background vocalist. His adventure in the art world
has progressed swiftly since then. Between 1948 and 1955, he was a successful actor in 27 films. Datuk L. Krishnan, a notable Malay film director
from India throughout the 1950s and 1960s, is behind the vivacity of his engagement in the cinema business.

schooling at Francis Light School and Sekolah Melayu Kampung Jawa. He worked HOTEL GOLDEN PALACE THE MINES, SUNGAI BESI, KUALA LUMPUR

by the Japanese navy, where he learnt Japanese songs. He developed an interest in ACCESSION FIGURE: 2008/0014799W
music after seeing his buddies performing in his hometown. He started collecting his
wage so he could buy a violin. While he was a student at the Japanese Navy School,
he manages a battalion of 150 men. He usually received requests to perform a few
songs at stage performances held every night of the week. Because of the Japanese
school system, he was able to quickly grasp the Japanese language. He had been sent
by the Japanese to various places to hone his abilities.
Previously, he practiced playing music with the Sinaran Bintang Sore band. He later joined the Village Youth Orchestra as a violinist, vocalist,
and songwriter. Since Mr. Kamaruddin recognized his talent, he now offers piano lessons in his home. He started off by taking part in a singing contest
hosted by Radio Malaya in the north. He held the third spot in 1945 and held the same position in 1946. He originally held the title of lead singer for
Malaya in 1947. Since then, he and the Village Youth Orchestra have gained a lot of notoriety in the north. The Asmara Appeal Group, an ensemble
of aristocratic theatre performers, performed in Penang. He didn't have any money at the time, but he intended on going to the concert. She used the
money she made from the celebrations and the performances to buy clothes. Once upon a time, he had to put on a ripped shirt and externally cover it
with a piece of coat.
Director B.S. saw him singing his own song, "Azizah," at a cultural fair in early 1948. Rahjans recruited him to perform as a backup vocalist
for Singapore-based Shaw Brothers studio movies. He agreed, and during the following three weeks, in addition to singing, he worked as a clapper-
8
boy, assistant cameraman, and continuity guy. Run Run and Runme Shaw, two film industry titans from Shanghai, founded a studio on Jalan Ampas
in 1941, equipping it with cutting-edge equipment and employing the best people for film production. Ramlee appeared in Chinta in 1948 as a member
of the Shaw brothers' newly established business, Malay Film Productions. His first acting performance on the big screen was directed by renowned
Indian filmmaker B.S. Rajhans. P.Ramlee directed his debut movie, Penarik Becha, seven years later (The Trishaw Man). Ramlee made his acting
debut in the 1957 comedy Bujang Lapok (Dowdy Bachelors), which is still well-liked by contemporary Malay moviegoers.
1950 – 1957: Bloom of P.Ramlee’s popularity
He played the title role in the 1958 military movie Sergeant Hassan, which also featured FIGURE 4: MAJLIS SEMPENA MALAM NOSTALGIA P. RAMLEE DI

(Saadiah) love engagement, which was greeted with opposition from Tengku Zaleha's family SULTAN BADLISHAH, 29 JUN 2002

wrote, directed, and starred in. The cast includes S. Kadarisman, Yusof Latiff, Ahmad Nisfu,
and Kuswadinata. Ramlee directed plays at Happy World, New World, the Victoria Theater,
and Sultan Mahmood Mangkat Di Julang (1959), Kachip Mas (1961), and Damaq (1952).
P.Ramlee is also recognized for his comedic work, which is shown by the fact that he directed the Bujang Lapok film series, in which he also
costarred alongside S. Shamsuddin and Aziz Sattar and which, due to its social awareness theme, became his favourite comedy film. Three sequels to
Bujang Lapok were produced as a result of its popularity: Ali Baba Bujang Lapok, Pendekar Bujang Lapok, and Seniman Bujang Lapok. His
satisfaction with Saloma inspired him to create the movie Ibu Mertua-ku in 1962, for which he also wrote the script and played Kassim Slamat. The
movie wasn't only a financial success; its theme song, "Di Mana Kan Ku Cari Ganti," even fared better than the movie. In the movie, Ramlee also
displays his saxophone playing prowess. The Most Versatile Actor Award, which was first given out at the 10th Asian Film Festival in 2016, went to
my mother-in-law.
9
P.Ramlee and his wife had a brief appearance in the Hong Kong movie Love Parade, directed by Lin Dai and starring Peter Chen Ho, a year
later. Madu Tiga and Tiga Abdul, which was his last project with Shaw Brothers before moving to Kuala Lumpur's Studio Merdeka (owned by Ho Ah
Loke and HM Shah) in April of that year, were two movies he directed, scripted, and starred in in 1964. The Shaw family kept working with P. Ramlee
even after purchasing a significant stake in Studio Merdeka. His first film with Studio Merdeka, Sitora Harimau Jadian, had both him acting and
writing the story. Ramlee tried to use special effects in the film, but he had to handle a range of chores, including editing, because of a tight budget
and a lack of aid. During a screening of the movie in Singapore, which was attended by actors Ahmad Daud and Saadiah, the Shaw brothers emerged
after 15 minutes. It was the only Malay movie ever pulled from the shelves.
1971 – 1973: A sudden goodbye
Ramlee directed 18 other movies for Studio Merdeka till 1972, among them Masam-Masam Manis and the Do
Re Mi movie series. Following the failure of the last three films following P. Ramlee's departure, Malay Film
Productions suspended operations in 1967. A year later, the contract with the Ramlee-sponsored recording company
EMI ended, and the business chose not to extend it. Ramlee was surprised by this, but he made the decision that EMI
would no longer be a part of his work. His last song and lyrics were "Tears in Kuala Lumpur," which was performed by
his wife, Puan Sri Saloma, after his passing. His final film with Studio Merdeka was Lakmana Do Re Mi (1972). Near
the end of his career, Ramlee appeared in two television drama series with scripts by Abdullah Hussain: Intan (1971)
and Rantau Selamat (1972). Ramlee, H.M. Shah, and three other individuals established the Malaysian Film Company,
or PERFIMA, with the intention of expanding the nation's film industry. But in late February 1973, Ramlee and
FIGURE 5: P. RAMLEE - SEPANJANG H.M. Shah were let go from PERFIMA because of disagreements with the management. One day before he passed
RIWAYATKU, 1998 away, Ramlee had intended to launch his own production business to take on the Shaw Brothers.

1973 – The loss of the Malay Archipelago's cinematic legend
Great artist P. Ramlee died suddenly when he was 43 years old. The deceased breathed his last by the side of his wife, Salmah Ismail (Saloma)
at the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital at approximately 5.30 am on 29 May 1973. Thirteen years after his passing, in 1986, the P. Ramlee Memorial,
also known as Pustaka Peringatan P. Ramlee, was erected at his Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, house in recognition of his contributions to the country's
entertainment sector. Jalan Parry, a thoroughfare in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, was renamed Jalan P. Ramlee in his honour in 1982. He received the
honorific title "Tan Sri" in Malaysia in 1990 and the honorary title "Datuk Amar" from the Sarawak State Government in 2009. A museum called The
P. Ramlee House is situated on Jalan P. Ramlee in Penang, Malaysia (originally Caunter Hall Road). The building is a restored timber home that his
father and uncle constructed in 1926. On March 22, 2017, P. Ramlee's 88th birthday, Google honoured him with a Doodle on the Malaysian Google
homepage. As P.Ramlee’s quote during his days ““I will be alive for another 1000 years”.

5.0 CONCLUSION
His contributions are still recognized and appreciated today. In the nation's capital of Kuala Lumpur, places including museums, halls,
buildings, and even streets have been named after him. Recent productions of a musical based on the works of P. Ramlee have featured the work
of up-and-coming vocalists and composers.
We can draw the conclusion that there are a great number of archives that continuously incorporate several articles of P. Ramlee's career
throughout his entire life. Even though P. Ramlee has passed away, many younger people in Malaysia may still love watching his older films and
listening to his older songs on a regular basis. P. Ramlee has acted in at least 60 films, directed 35 films, and recorded hundreds of songs during
his career. In addition to that, the information included in these archives may help raise awareness among the population of Malaysia, many of
whom struggle to grasp the gravity of the situation.
