A Message from
Member Committee President Elect

It is with great honour that I pen this message
for the 27th anniversary magazine of AIESEC
in Sri Lanka. AIESEC is an organization that
has withstood a lot of grave challenges, both
globally and within the nation. Whether it be
a civil war, natural disasters, terrorist attacks,
or a global pandemic; AIESEC in Sri Lanka has
managed to overcome these challenges and
come out stronger each time. This has been
due to resilience and tenacity shown by the
core of this organization, our members, the
youth of Sri Lanka. Every single year, groups
of young people have stood up across the
country to lead this organization and achieve

amazing things.
We are an organization with a proud history
of 27 years, and I am more than confident that
we have an amazing 27 years ahead of us as

well.

A Message to Initiative Groups from

MCVP OGT & Expansion Development

Mr. Piyum Pamuditha

MCVP oGT & Expansion Development

National Expansion Board is the main governing body
of the Initiative Groups in AIESEC Sri Lanka, which is
working on the initiation, performance upliftment and
overall management of those entities. Over the past
few months AIESEC Sri Lanka has been able to expand
up to 11 new Initiative Groups, exploring diverse paths
to excel in what we are promoting ‘Youth Leadership’.
It’s always pleasant to witness more and more young
people in Sri Lanka getting access to the unique
leadership delivery we are providing and they are
experiencing those journeys through which they
can unleash their best versions. Mainly focusing on
the Outgoing functions and the relevant supporting
aspects, those Initiative Groups have been evolving
and enhancing their processes day by day with the
assistance of the National Expansion Board and the
parent Local Committee. Attracting a diverse set of
markets towards the Outgoing products and supplying
exchange opportunities for youth to develop, has
been a highlighting fact as an outcome of this.

National PR Team Message

Leadership Journal’ is the monthly magazine launched by
AIESEC Sri Lanka. Being established in 1995, as a member
chapter of AIESEC International, AIESEC Sri Lanka has
been creating a positive impact through international,
experience-centered leadership development to drive
the youth for the betterment of the country and the
world. Over 27 years we have engaged and developed
over millions of youth who have been through an AIESEC

experience.

As AIESEC, We believe in Youth and We believe leadership
is the fundamental solution to all problems. And that is
why every aspect of AIESEC’s operations is managed by
students and recent graduates. Thus, this magazine was
also organized and conducted by an amazing set of youth,
the National Public Relations Team of AIESEC Sri Lanka,
which I would like to mention here for their dedication. We
have operated in this way since our inception, making us
uniquely “by young people, for young people”, over these
many decades and that is why AIESEC is the largest global
platform for young people to explore and develop their

leadership potential.

I consider, this would be a massive platform to recognize
and showcase the iconic and timely initiatives, events and
talents of all the local committees and initiative groups
of AIESEC Sri Lanka. Also, a platform of recognition and
appreciation to all our partners and supporters who are

with us as a massive strength throughout.

On an endnote, I believe that the very first launch of
‘Leadership Journal’, would be a launching pad for greater
connections and continue to make a knock-on effect on
in numerous positive beginnings led by the wonderful
youth who developed themselves through AIESEC, for

years to come!

A day in the diary of AIESEC

Chapter 01

Hey young leaders! This article is the first attempt of a series of articles dedicated
to revealing the journey of AIESEC up to its present legacy. Hang on with me
to travel across time and find AIESEC through the lens of history. This article
elaborates the first decade’s history of AIESEC from 1948 to 1958.

Did you know what AIESEC stands for? It
stands for Association Internationale des
Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et
Commerciales. AIESEC is a global, youth-
led organization focused on developing
leadership in young people through
facilitating cross-cultural exchanges. AIESEC
is a non-governmental not-for-profit
organization in consultative status with
the United Nations Economic and Social
Council (ECOSOC), affiliated with the UN
DPI, a member of ICMYO, and is recognized
by UNESCO.

1948, just after World War II, is considered Jean Choplin convinced Bengt Sjostrand,
the founding year of AIESEC. It is believed the head of the Student Union of

universities. Jean Choplin’s eagerness to
promote reconciliation and cross-cultural
understanding can be identified by how he
suspended his studies in 1949 to dedicate
fully to the organization’s development.
However, he got special permission to
complete his studies a year later than usual
in 1951.

In March 1951, the first legislative meeting
of the Congress of AIESEC International
was held. The Congress had the idea of
creating the “Senior Branch” or the Alumni
for AIESEC. At the beginning of 1950,
Sjostrand initiated the preliminary meeting
for AIESEC.Jean Choplin officially presided
over the meeting as the first Presidenting
Country Committee President (PCCP).
Now, this designation is named as, The
President of AIESEC International. After
that Jean Choplin started finding support
for the organization from economic and
political institutions.

The next PCCP for AIESEC was Kaj Verner
Slot from Denmark, and the Congress
was held in Copenhagen. After Jean’s
term ended as the PCCP he moved for
an exchange to study at the University
of Kansas, USA. During this time, the next
PCCP for the next Congress was elected.
He was Albert Kaltenthaler. After Choplin
returned from Kansas, he negotiated
with Mrs. Le Verrier from UNESCO to get
cooperation status for AIESEC. It is evident
that Jean Choplin’s vision to acquire lost
humanity during the second world war
has created a limitless impact for young
leaders. This is the story of AIESEC’s first
decade of legacy. The next episode is
awaiting to reveal the proud history of
AIESEC. Till then, follow the footprints of
great founders of AIESEC!

In an organization, the president is the most important person in the organization. But
every president can not be considered as a leader. But in AIESEC, we are proud to say
that we have that president, who knows the way, goes the way, and guides others to
follow the way. Yes! AIESECers have had and will continue to have a president who is
also a leader.

Let’s welcome Mr. Banuka Hathurusingha,

you have to take a breather and think if

than living a life where pleasing others and
meeting expectations is the only thing you
do. It’s time we take the risk and live our
lives for ourselves.
