Lola and
Fred

Lola does Magic

One day Lola said to Fred, ‘What do you want to do
today? It’s raining and I don’t really want to go out.’

‘I’m not really sure,’ said Fred.

‘In that case I shall tidy the big cupboard,’ said Lola.
‘It’s just the job for a rainy day.’

‘Alright,’ said Fred. ‘Let me know if you find my
squeaky panda.’

The first thing she pulled out was a large bag. She looked inside.
‘Oooh!’ she cried. ‘Fred, wake up and look at this!’

Fred opened one sleepy eye. ‘Hmmm?’ he enquired.

‘Look!’ said Lola, ‘There are lots of things for dressing-up! I’m going
to dress us both in some of these things and then we’ll look in the
mirror!’

Then she emptied the bag onto the floor.

‘No peeping,’ said Lola as she put things on Fred, then took them
off, then tried more things on him.

At last she finished.

‘Now I’m going to dress-up as well,’ she said.

A few minutes later she pulled him over to the mirror, still telling him
not to open his eyes.

‘We’re here, open your eyes!’ she said.

Fred opened his eyes and what did he see?

‘There you are,’ said Lola, laughing.
‘You’re a wizard!’

Fred looked in the mirror; the long purple robe that Lola had made
from an old piece of fabric looked rather good, especially with the
piece of string that she had put round him as a belt.

He was also wearing a hat.

‘Oh, you are clever!’ he said. ‘You look nice as well.’
Lola looked at herself in the mirror.
‘It’s lucky that there were two of these hats,’ she said.

‘Actually,’ said Lola, ‘These are wizard’s hats, so I wonder if we
could do a magic spell.’

‘Oh, I’m not sure how to,’ said Fred.

‘If I get a magic wand, it will probably work,’ said Lola.
Off she went and came back with a wooden spoon.
‘This will work, as long as I hold it upside down,’ she explained to Fred.

‘Now, what spell shall I do?’ wondered Lola.

She looked at Fred, raised her wand, pointed it at him and said, ‘Oh
Fred, oh Fred you clever boy, I wish that you could find a toy.’

‘That was lovely,’ said Fred, ‘and it rhymes, so it should work.’

‘That was fun,’ said Lola. ‘Shall we have something to eat now?’
Fred always thought that having something to eat was a very good idea.
They took the dressing-up clothes off so that they wouldn’t get dirty.

When they had finished eating it was still raining, so Fred helped
Lola to do the cupboard and they spent the rest of the day

making everything clean and tidy.

When it was all done Fred said, ‘That was a really nice day.’
‘Yes, it was fun,’ said Lola, yawning. ‘I think it’s time for bed now!’
Fred agreed and went to get into his bed.

Suddenly he stopped.
‘Oh Lola!’ he said. ‘It didn’t come true!’
‘What didn’t?’ asked Lola.

‘The toy! The magic spell! I didn’t find a toy!’ said Fred,
looking rather sad.

‘Oh,’ said Lola. ‘No, I wonder why. Perhaps I didn’t say it
properly.’

‘That’s a shame,’ said Fred, getting into his bed and flopping
down on the blankets. ‘Oh dear, I shall have to rearrange these
blankets,’ he said. ‘Something is digging into me.’

He hopped out of bed and started to
spread all the bedding out.

Suddenly he exclaimed, ‘Oh, it’s here!’

‘What is?’ asked Lola.
‘The toy that I lost, it was in the bed,’ said Fred.
‘The spell DID work!’

‘Well, I meant a new toy really,’ said Lola,
‘But I see what you mean.’

‘This is BETTER than a new toy, said Fred, getting
back into his bed.

‘It’s my favourite one and I thought that I’d lost it!’

‘Lola,’ said Fred, ‘You always have VERY GOOD ideas!
Lola laughed.
‘Goodnight Fred,’ she said.
‘Goodnight Lola,’ said Fred.
