Our Mapandan Town Festival is amongst the many traditions that have been passed on to us by our older generations. Our institutionalized socio-cultural norms and values as well as traditional identities are maintained through such celebrations. It is worth noting that festivals are not only a source of merriment. These add lasting joy and meaning to our people’s lives that are rooted in a relational network. Trust and cohesion amongst the people are furthered as they participate in shared activities. Their solidarity increases as they contribute to the success of events reminiscent of a common past, fueling greater passion and pride in their cultural identities. On the context of the embeddedness of our people in a social network, it is important to note that in all our previous festivals, we have recorded thousands of guests from within the province, and nearby regions, not to mention the hundreds of diasporas joining our local population. With which, we increase the radius of formal and informal linkages for our people that not only serve as a sturdy hedge for them in times of crisis but as a magnificent gateway opening avenues for growth and development for all. This is the hope that we wish to communicate to our people through our festivities – a hope reflective of bayanihan, where not only a vital insurance or safety net is prepared for them but also the upliftment needed such that they can join our bandwagon as we tread the path towards socio-economic growth and success. Aside from being awarded as the cleanest, safest, and greenest municipality in Pangasinan, Mapandan is recognized for the thousands of pandan mantling its landscape. As a native plant used in many Filipino cuisines, its importance is highlighted not only in the delectable products made from its aromatic and fragrant leaves, but also in the multitude of lives it sustains as a source of opportunity and livelihood. I hope that the activities you have organized for this festivity will foster solidarity among the residents of Mapandan, allow them to showcase their artistic capabilities, as well as encourage them to trace the roots of their cultural heritage and collective identity. I am writing to you a transformed person, changed from who I was prior to our distinguished competition of Mrs. Mapandan. Although I spent the past few years in the US, my heart has maintained its connection to our Mapandan and it's beloved people. I was hesitant to enter this contest but upon hearing that our town needed a new fire truck and with my late father, Pedro Aquino Jr. AKA Judy Aquino, being closely linked as a former police officer here, I immersed into the campaign with the unwavering support of my husband, children, mother, siblings, uncle's, auntie's and friends. Throughout the journey, I learned to lean on loyal friends and relatives, to muster up the courage and confidence to approach colleagues and even newly-met strangers. I have developed a true understanding of people's generosity, to which I am so grateful. You are all a blessing to me. To my fellow contestants, I share with you the trials of the competition. But we also share this -- that collectively, we leave a lasting legacy to our beloved town and it's pursuit to uphold the health and safety of Mapandan's citizens. We are all victors in this. Furthermore, I also donated the commission money I received to our school project, Mapandanians in Singapore, which advocates for their rights.
