HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC

It is a well-known fact that Music Education and
academic achievement go hand in hand.

Researchers have studied the benefits of Music
education for decades and have consistently found
strong correlations between music and academic
achievement. Of equal importance, however, are the
social and artistic connections that are formed when
engaging in a music programme. The simple and
enjoyable act of making music in groups or
individually fosters important social and emotional
skills such as self regulation, self confidence,
leadership as well as socio-emotional intelligence.

Sign up now to start learning to play an instrument or
be part of a musical extramural activity at school.

Our extramural musical activities include Marimbas,
Choir and Bouzouki and see the list of instruments
offered below. You will have the opportunity to
register on Tuesday, 10 January for individual music
lessons or musical extramurals.

Look forward to seeing you all in a musical activity!

SAHETI SPORT AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES 2023

An Introduction to First Aid:

Having the confidence to help others in an emergency situation can really make a
difference. Your ability to use what you will learn on this course and to put it into
practice may save someone's life one day. It could be your best friend, a family
member, a work colleague or even a complete stranger. So well done to you. You have
taken this opportunity to apply yourself and to gain the knowledge, skill and
confidence to provide effective first aid.
What is First Aid?
First aid can be defined as "the immediate care given to someone who is injured or
ill, using readily available materials." In other words, you are the first person at the
scene of the incident and that you help those who are hurt by utilising items around
you. Knowing first aid helps to treat those minor cuts and grazes that are so common
around the home as well as life-threatening emergencies at larger accident scenes.

SAHETI SPORT AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES 2023

The objectives of first aid are to:

P - Preserve life.

P - Prevent further injury.

P - Promote recovery.

As a first aider, how can you help?

Although the obvious may be to treat
the injured and ill, as a first aider, you
have many responsibilities and tasks
other than providing first aid. These
may include:

Gathering bystanders at the scene
of an accident to assist you.

Providing reassurance to the family
and casualty.

Recording important information
about the casualty and the incident.
(E.g. Medication, medical conditions.)

Handing over the scene and all
casualties to the medical staff when
they arrive.

SAHETI SPORT AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES 2023

What is a Casualty?
A casualty is described as someone who is injured or ill and is being helped by a
first aider or a lay-rescuer. (A person with limited or no medical qualification or
experience.) When we treat people, we refer to them as casualties and not as
patients.
Acting Immediately!
As you progress through this course, you will realise that time plays a very
important role in saving lives. The whole idea of learning first aid is to give
yourself the knowledge, skill and confidence to provide assistance to an injured
person as soon as an incident occurs. Bystanders or relatives not knowing what
to do, or being too shy to try, may unwittingly contribute to unnecessary deaths
and/or chronic injuries. Applying the simple skill of first aid can save many lives.

SAHETI SPORT AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES 2023

Community and School Service Hours

Welcome to 2023. As always, we trust that you are ready and raring to go for a year filled
with a variety of community activities.

SAHETI strives to develop individuals with a holistic perception of the world. Our academic,
sporting and cultural offerings enable individuals to achieve a balance in their lives and share
in a variety of experiences throughout their schooling career. The school therefore
introduced a policy in 2014 whereby every Grade 8 to 12 student will be afforded the
opportunity to share in the “experience of giving”.

We have introduced School Service hours to make it more manageable for our students to
complete the required hours.

Each student from Grade 8 to 11 will be required to complete a minimum of 10 hours
Community and School Service per year. This will also assist students in Grade 12 who have
to do Community Service ONLY accumulated during Grades 10 to 12, to meet the
requirements of the IEB Life Orientation syllabus. (Please refer to the Gr 12 Life Orientation
requirements).

The 10 hours for Community and School Service per year are split as below for those students
who wish to combine the two (excluding Gr 12s):

• A maximum of 4 hours School Service
• The balance of 6 hours Community Service.

Students who prefer to only do Community Service hours, must complete the full 10 hours
per year. Community Service hours that are ONLY donations will not be accepted. Donations
will only count 50% of the 6 community service hours. Hours must ALSO include actual
community service at an approved institution.

Social Engagement Programme – SEP (Outreach)

To be eligible for SEP (Outreach) Awards, the requirements for this should exceed the
compulsory 10 hours of Community and School Service hours:

• Grade 10 to 12 SEP members should complete between 6 and 20+ hours.
• Grade 8 SEP members should complete between 6 and 15+ hours, and Grade 9 SEP

members between 6 and 18+ hours.
In addition, Community and School Service hours may be used for the President’s Award
programme.

SAHETI SPORT AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES 2023

Please follow this procedure for Community and School Service, and SEP:

• Students must use the official SAHETI Community and School Service, and Social
Engagement Programme (Outreach) Letter (page 4 below), ensuring all particulars are
completed in specific detail. It serves as an introduction of the School to the
institution where community service or SEP will be completed. There is a copy
included in this document for your convenience, and on the SAHETI Student Team
platform. It is also available from the Homeroom Teachers.

• The letter must be completed and signed by the relevant person at the institution and
kept by the student for safe keeping. It is the responsibility of the student to have a
copy of the letter on hand.

Students must scan, save with activity name and date and upload the document on the
Community Service on-line platform. The link is https://ssep.azurewebsites.net

Students must also:
- fully complete all online details on the App as required
- keep one copy for their own records
- keep one copy in a separate file for Grade 12 LO Portfolio (grades 10 to 12 only)
- keep one copy for President’s Award Programme (if applicable)
- and one copy for the Social Engagement Programme (Outreach, if applicable).

Members of SEP may use these hours as part of their external hours that will count
towards recognition for awards.

• These hours will then be reflected on the student’s report.

• These hours may also be used to meet the requirements for Community Service as set
out by the different tertiary institutions for the Health Sciences’ courses.

• Evidence of completed Community and School Service hours, for 2023, must be
uploaded using the on-line platform by the following dates:

First term: Monday, 20 March 2023
Second term: Friday, 23 June 2023
Third term: Monday, 23 October 2023

Please note, it remains the responsibility of every student to scan and upload these
hours timeously before the deadline date for each term. No hours will be accepted
after the deadline dates. Recognition will not be given unless these requirements are
adhered to.
