SHORT MESSAGE FROM VICE CHANCELLOR As a technical university, Universiti Malaysia Perlis is particularly cognizant of the increasing role technology plays in our everyday lives, especially in providing solutions to our problems big and small; and the enhanced responsibility that lies upon the university’s shoulder in the matter. We have also become very sensitive towards several aspects related to the responsibility, with specific reference to the sustainability agenda. Firstly, we have come to recognise that no other organisations have as much capacity and capability as the university, to effect change in what we want the world to be, especially in the context of the geographical location of the university. We have the people, the know-how, the technology and the network. Secondly, in spite of the said capacity and capability, there is no way we can work on this agenda alone, on our own. Collegiality and partnerships, at the level of the local, regional and international community is a must. As a university, we can work on our projects and drive home the message of sustainability to our students. However we can, and must also propose ways in which we can address challenges which require the combined efforts of the government, industry and civil society to work together, with the university providing the intellectual input and practical platform for this to happen. When successful, the platform will lead to an ecosystem that will enable the change that we need for sustainability to happen. Thirdly, despite the presence of advancing technology, we also acknowledge that not every problem needs advanced technology as a solution. There are times when conventional methods combined with creativity and most importantly, the people’s will based on their understanding of the importance of sustainability, will result in success. There are also times when indigenous resources and technology offer an equally effective solution to challenges. Our understanding of the three points above have become our mainstay in proceeding with our sustainability agenda. We have done much but we also know the road ahead is still long. We will, as a university, take leadership in the sustainability agenda.

We understand that actions we take at the university are not for the benefit of the university alone but may and will reverberate through the folds of the present and future society, influencing its members to embrace the idea of a better future for us and generations to come and thus take suitable actions to reflect the understanding. It is our ardent hope that innovations that result from the creativity of our administration and core businesses of the university, and those that we co-create with our stakeholders from various segments of society will represent a lasting UniMAP footprint towards a better future.

INTRODUCTION Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is Malaysia's 17th public institution of higher learning. Approved by the Malaysian Cabinet in May 2001, it started off as a university college - Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara Malaysia (KUKUM). The institution’s first intake comprised 116 engineering students who began classes in June 2002. In February 2007, KUKUM was upgraded to a full-fledged university and renamed Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). The university is one of only four technical public universities in Malaysia. With a vision to become an internationally competitive technical university, UniMAP’s raison d’etre was to produce highly-skilled engineers to fulfil and support Malaysia’s Industrial Blueprint (Pelan Induk Perindustrian Negara). Over the years, we have remained true to this vision, strengthening our mission to produce exemplary individuals who will contribute to the Nation’s development and industry competitiveness agenda. With the core values of Knowledge, Sincerity, Excellence, UniMAP’s objectives are translated into its commitment to key institutional agenda and stakeholders. The objectives recognise and place emphasis on sustainability perspectives and the university’s contribution to the agenda, both directly and indirectly: STUDENT To develop holistic future leaders through well-rounded education based on practical application of knowledge and skills MTUN (Malaysian Technical University Network) To play a role in tertiary TVET to support the nation’s industrial growth. COMMUNITY To be the catalyst for the sharing of knowledge and technology with society. FACULTY AND STAFF To provide supportive environment that empowers intellectual and professional growth. RESEARCH To generate new knowledge through strategic research endeavours for the benefit of humanity.

CAMPUS CULTURE To create an intellectual environment conducive to the sharing of knowledge, views, culture and ideas in pursuit of sustainability. NATION BUILDING To contribute to the nation’s socioeconomic development and enrich the Malaysian culture. UniMAP currently has around 12,000 local and international students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of study, with an alumni size in excess of 30000 all around the world. We offer 33 engineering, engineering technology and technology bachelor degree programmes, two business and one new media degree programmes, also at the bachelor level. We also run six diploma level engineering programmes, whose graduates can proceed to bachelor degree programmes at the university. At postgraduate level, both taught courses and research programmes of study are available to choose from. Research grants may be available, depending on areas of research and grants availability. As a technical university, learning includes practical-oriented or lab-intensive components, especially in engineering technology and technology programmes. Our technology degree programmes run on the 3u1i mode, where students spend three years at the university and one year in industry. Additionally, our close collaboration with more than 120 industry partners across the board enables the university to leverage on industry’s facilities for students skills and technological know-how, while both parties enjoy the sharing of the latest technological innovation to propel further research and enhance the teaching-learning experience at the university. Post- COVID19, many of our programmes run on hybrid mode, while F2F learning is still accorded to practical-oriented programmes or part of programmes. In addition to content knowledge, the university strives to equip students with values that are pertinent to their growth and development. These are encapsulated in UniMAP’s core values of Knowledge, Sincerity and Excellence – translated into action through both the extra and co-curricular activities offered to students as a way to enrich their campus experience. One of these is the university’s flagship Seven Pillars programme, which aims to enhance students’ personality development. Another is the Service Learning Malaysia University for Society (SULAM) programme, which covers both curriculum and co-curriculum components in inculcating a culture of service amongst students. Both programmes aim to produce holistic graduates who are entrepreneurial and balanced, and who will become exemplary individuals making significant contributions to society, both at local and global levels. At present, UniMAP is engaged in more than 63 community projects, providing authentic opportunities for both students and staff to engage in social entrepreneurship, and a sturdy foundation for students to grow from for when they leave the security of the university and venture into the world of work.

3 SDG 1: NO POVERTY Financial aid for students to attend UniMAP and enable them to complete university studies UniMAP has set up a suite of initiatives to cater to the needs of our students and potential international students to ensure that poverty does not stop them from completing higher education and that they have the support necessary to complete their studies. UniMAP has created Tabung Endowmen Pelajar@UniMAP and Tabung Wakaf RM5 RM10@UniMAP programmes. These programmes are for UniMAP students’ welfare and development, allowing donors the avenue to help UniMAP students who are in financial difficulties, especially those from the low income (B40) group. In addition, monies collected from these programmes also go toward the development of educational needs.

4 Community anti-poverty programmes The university’s UniMAP for Society programme develops high-impact community programmes by putting good use the university’s research expertise to benefit the community. For example, it provides assistance to the local community by financially supporting start-ups towards socially sustainable businesses, as well as through relevant education programmes. The Affordable Recirculating Aquaculture System (ARAS) and also named as RAS BM600, hopes to overcome students’ lack of income through social entrepreneurship (SE). This Social Innovation for Poverty Eradication (SIPER @ Aquapreneurs) project has been designed in order to ease financial problems faced by participants in the B40 group. It was developed to overcome the problem and help them to generate some income as aquapreneurs. Besides that it is hoped that they will become future job creators and play a role as a mentor to others. The programme will also increase the university’s rate of graduate employability. Participants will be trained to be familiar with UniMAP’s RAS BM600 aquaculture technology, farming and hence marketing Jade Perch (fish species). SIPER is scalable and viable to be implemented among students at UniMAP, and by members of economically- deprived community, and community members at large. Maybank Islamic Berhad's iSIPER project is funded by funds from zakat collection amounting to RM500,000 from Maybank Islamic Berhad. This project involves three (3) main crops project focusing on gray oyster mushroom and hydroponic plants. A total of RM120,000 has been allocated for the mushroom project, specifically for 35,000 blocks of mushrooms; while RM20,000 has been allocated for the hydroponics infrastructure purposes and plant needs. The rest has been allocated to cover the allowance for 25 to 50 participants, comprising asnaf (hardcore poor) and B40 graduates. UniMAP has also participated in an exhibition in conjunction with the Launching Ceremony of Bumiputera Development Action 2030 which was officiated by the country’s Prime Minister in Kuala Lumpur. Driven for Community Project (TERAJU - UniMAP) Oyster Mushroom Planting was exhibited. This exhibition helped the local community to promote their products at the national level, showcasing the socioeconomic benefits the project has afforded its participants.

5 UNIMAP FLOOD VOLUNTEER MISSION PHASE 1 to 4: OPS KASIH BANJIR 2021 The UniMAP volunteer team was involved in the Phase 1 to 4 flood relief mission to four flood-hit geographical areas in Kedah, Klang, Kuantan, Pahang, in Malaysia. The mission, involving 150 UniMAP student and staff volunteers, helped reduce the burden of the communities affected by this disaster. 8 SDG 2 : ZERO HUNGER UniMAP shared its knowledge and expertise in conducting events to end hunger, contribute effort towards food security and improved nutrition, as well as promote sustainable agriculture. Management of campus food waste UniMAP supports organic waste treatment through the use of a Compost Machine, which is managed by the university’s Center for Energy Management & Sustainable Campus (COSCEM). Organic waste is collected from the university’s daycare centre, cafes in the campus or brought in from other university locations by COSCEM staff. This program is beneficial for both the university and staff, as the latter are educated on how to segregate waste, do simple composting and also practice good management of food waste. From the university point of view, this practise has greatly reduced costs of employing special contractors to manage the composting centers. 14481 kg of food waste has been collected for 2021. The benefits of compost fertilizer to improve the chemical, physical and biological properties of the soil in addition to supplying plant nutrients has led to its continuous use.

9 The Foodbank program at UniMAP has been operating since 2019 until now. This programme aims to facilitate and help underprivileged students and those from the low income (B40) group by providing them with free food. The implementation of the Foodbank Siswa @ UniMAP Program employs two key methods; firstly the Food Pantry which provides aid in the form of dry food; and Food Kitchen which provides cooked food. The latter is available three times a week. The help provided is aimed at ensuring that students’ learning process and their campus life is not hindered due to hunger.

10 UniMAP is very concerned in ensuring that none of its students and staff are at risk from food security issues. This includes making certain that they have access to nutritious and affordable food. Thus, UniMAP has provided healthy and affordable food choices for all cafés dotted in various locations on campus, as well as in departmental pantries for staff in all of its on-campus offices.
