2 Painting Hints and Tips Choosing the right System: Marineware supplies a range of systems aimed for both trade and DIY users. Many of the trade systems are not available to non-professionals due to current legislation. The increased cost of the two-pack solutions will pay you back with their longevity due to higher quality and better UV stability. However, applicator skill set and painting environment will play a significant role in the quality of the finish. Traditional single-packs are more tolerant to variable and less ideal conditions. If you’re painting in a marina or the side of the canal, we recommend the use of a single-pack system and picking the best of days to get the best results. Finally, a two-pack system will often react if it is applied over a single-pack product so, a single-pack system is a much safer option if you’re not sure about the type of paint you are going over. Steel Prep: Substrate preparation is the most important job to get right and is the main cause of paint failures. In a perfect world, we would blast and epoxy coat steel on the same day, however, this is not always possible. Selecting the right primer to go with the available preparation is also important, if there is any chance of rust having formed a surface tolerant primer should be selected. The trade painters normally head for the specialist surface tolerant epoxies whilst the boat owner would use a single-pack like Multi Marine Primer. This is a big subject but the biggest tip is always to download the data sheet and follow the instructions, or contact us for help. & &

3 When to Paint: The professionals tend to have better environments to paint in and therefore have more options available to them. If your vessel is steel, you need to consider the dew point before painting. This is the relationship between air temperature, surface temperature and relative humidity. If these three conditions are in the wrong order, condensation will form on the surface and stop the paints from adhering. Cleaning: The simplest of steps that are often not done properly. The first step is to clean everything before sanding or grinding. This stops the contaminants from getting ground into the scratch profile on the surface. Always use the suggested cleaner or degreaser, you can save a few pence on some cheaper ones but you will wish you didn’t if they fail. The trade applicators use the Two-Cloth method. This is simply applying the degreaser with one cloth and drying the surface off with a second clean cloth. Just wiping the surface with a degreaser only moves any contaminants around the surface and doesn’t remove them. Do not use on base blasted steel. Always paint 3°C above the dew point. (To help you, simply search the internet for a dew point calculator). Watch out for those warm days in early spring, when you have cold steel and high humidity! & &

4 Primers and Undercoats: The primer and undercoat you use will depend on the system and finish you choose. The most important tip here is don’t scrimp. Primers protect the steel from corrosion and they need some thickness to do their job. So, if you find you are sanding through your primer in lots of places then you need to apply more. Undercoats are less about protection and more about preparing a surface to get the best quality finish out of the topcoat. Topcoat Tips: When hand painting, use high-quality rollers and brushes and take your time. If the conditions, light or temperature is not right, then delay painting. Use the correct thinners as they are designed to work with the paint. Whatever the topcoat you are using, having the right film thickness on the boat will affect the longevity of the paint. Even if the paint covers really well in one coat, it will need multiple coats to give it the protection it’s designed to do. So always follow the datasheet. All the paint companies have a lot of experience and the data sheet is where they put all of that knowledge, even professional painters will still use data sheets to get the best results. Sanding Tips: Firstly, when branded abrasives are used we see better results with more even sanding. Start with all the hand sanding around details and fittings and then move on to using sanders, working back into your hand sanding areas. This will reduce the chance of seeing these scratches in the finished coat. If you are using Silicon Carbide Papers (Wet and Dry) you might have to go up a grade or two because these papers are very sharp and can leave deep scratches. Remember half the battle is in the quality of the prep! & &

13 MARINE PAINTS If you know classic boats you will know Epifanes. With a full range of paint products from classic colours and golden varnishes to modern two pack products, Epifanes has all the colours to bring out the beauty of any boat. The range can be split into two clear ranges. The single pack products which are more tolerant of less than perfect conditions, and the two pack polyurethane range which can be more challenging to get a good finish but is harder wearing and provides longer lasting results. Ease of application Ease of maintenance Gloss level and gloss retention Abrasion and scratch resistance One-Component Paint System Two-Component Paint System ***** ***** **** *** *** *** ***** ***** The choice between one-component and two -component finishes depends primarily on the type of substrate to be coated. The existing paint system in the case of maintenance and to a lesser extent the working conditions underwhich the paint has to be applied (temperature / relative air humidity). A one-component system provides ease of application, is more tolerant regarding the existing paint and can be applied with good results in a wider range of temperatures. A two-component finish is harder and more durable, but is more demanding regarding application skills and working conditions. & &
