EXPERT GUIDES IMMERSIVE ACTIVITIES FLEXIBILITY FOR ALL AGES INCREDIBLE SHIPS ABOUT EXPEDITION CRUISING

HOW DOES A TYPICAL DAY START FOR YOU? Being British, with a good cup of tea! The elements are to be respected in the polar regions, so we always check the weather and ice conditions before an excursion. Then it’s time for action! Warm clothes, camera charged – the polar landscape and wildlife will do the rest. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TRAVELLERS COMING TO EXPLORE ANTARCTICA/THE ARCTIC? Bring binoculars. Binoculars are great for getting a better view of polar bears, Arctic foxes, spotting whales or watching soaring albatrosses as you cross the Drake Passage. WHAT’S THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED AS AN EXPEDITION GUIDE? It was in Antarctica. We spotted orca and took to the Zodiacs hoping to get a closer look. Luck was on our side, they were very curious and approached our boats. They then started to hunt gentoo penguins! It was amazing to see their agility and speed, although luckily for the penguins, they were faster! WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO WORKING IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD/THIS ROLE? I believe Antarctica is our last true wilderness. Glaciers that have no names, mountains that have never been climbed and a myriad of life in the ocean that we are still learning about. These unknowns and this pureness attracted me. FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WORKING IN THE POLAR REGIONS? Having my breath taken away on a regular basis. Whether it’s the magnificent mountains rising up out of the ocean, the waves crashing ice onto a beach or the intimate moment between a penguin chick and its parent. It’s pure magic. Watching guests experience this for the first time is great too. BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU FACE IN YOUR ROLE? Attempting to capture the magic we experience. No photo or video does these places true justice. It's impossible to fully capture the awe, the solitude and the emotions that are evoked when visiting these wonders of the world. FAVOURITE TIME OF YEAR OR TIPS FOR WHEN TO GO? This is a question I'm asked a lot, and one I don’t think there is a single answer for. The light, landscapes and wildlife all change throughout the seasons, bringing different but always wonderful experiences. If there are certain things you want to see, it's worth checking the best month for it. 6 | WILDLIFE - Contact our Polar Travel Specialists on 0203 196 1000 or visit your local travel agent - Discovering a region's wildlife is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of travel. The incredible variety of species that exist across the globe, each adapted to its own unique habitat, is one of nature's most impressive accolades. And when it comes to the polar regions, it's nothing short of remarkable. With sub-zero temperatures, winters that see no light and vast barren landscapes covered in ice, you might think there's little wildlife that would be able to survive such conditions. But oh, how wrong you would be… With permanent year-round residents on both continents, the summers then see an utter explosion of life as migratory birds and marine life flock to these pristine icy wonderlands. If wildlife gets you excited, trust us, you're in for a real treat. ANTARCTICA'S PENGUINS & OTHER AMAZING RESIDENTS With its harsher and more isolated landscape, Antarctica in fact has no landdwelling mammals at all. But that doesn't mean there's little to see, as the marine mammals that call the white continent Antarctica and the Arctic are home to an incredibly rich diversity of wildlife that is as impressive as it is iconic. Prepare yourself, this is wow-factor wildlife at its best. WHERE BEST TO SPOT WHAT Antarctica for penguins The Arctic for polar bears Arctic Canada & Greenland for musk oxen The Drake Passage & Antarctica for soaring albatrosses All polar regions for whale watching! POLAR WILDLIFE

WILDLIFE | 7 - Contact our Polar Travel Specialists on 0203 196 1000 or visit your local travel agent - home are many, on land often, and they're a delight to behold. Most famed for its waddling tuxedowearing birds, Antarctica never disappoints when it comes to penguins. From the largest emperor penguin to the chinstrap, gentoo, king, comical bushyeyebrowed macaroni penguin or any other of the 18 species of these fabulous birds, watching them going about their business is a joy that's hard to put into words. Add to that the many species of seals, whales – including orcas, humpback, sperm, minke and fin – and flocks of seabirds, soaring albatrosses and petrels, and your camera is certain to be kept busy. THE RICH DIVERSITY OF ARCTIC WILDLIFE The Arctic, with its varied landscapes and connections to areas of land, is simply teeming with life both on land and in the sea. Perhaps its most famous resident is the polar bear, and there's no denying that seeing one in its natural icy habitat is a moment you'll treasure forever. But that’s only the start of it. You could see musk oxen, Arctic foxes and hares. Reindeer wandering freely through towns. Walruses lazing on ice, several species of seals and expansive bird colonies scattered across cliffs. Beluga whales, bowhead, orcas and the elusive narwhal swim the icy waters, and birds flock in their tens of thousands to breed during summer. It's a world of wonderful and varied wildlife that will truly be a highlight of every day. 8 | ANTARCTICA - Contact our Polar Travel Specialists on 0203 196 1000 or visit your local travel agent - To set foot in Antarctica is to experience something that is almost impossible to put into words. With sub-zero temperatures and no indigenous human population, Antarctica – the highest, driest, coldest and most remote place on Earth – is a truly pristine picture of nature’s frozen beauty and, frankly, one of the most exciting destinations on the planet. For much of the year, only the hardiest of explorers and scientists deign to venture into Antarctica’s freezing landscape. But from November to March, the Antarctic summer transforms this extraordinary wilderness, bringing warmer weather, longer days, and casting a magnificent light over its towering icebergs, glaciers, white mountains and crystal waters – not only creating the perfect conditions to explore this isolated land, but also a sparkling scene so powerful in its beauty it will quite literally take your breath away. As the summer sun burns longer each day, Antarctica’s wildlife blooms into spectacular life. Penguins waddle, bellyslide and nurture their young, seals laze on the ice, albatrosses soar overhead and petrels skim the waves of the freezing waters that are home to some of the most diverse marine life on the planet. Ruled by nature rather than humans, this ice-covered continent is home to unimaginable scenery, spectacular wildlife and experiences so unique you’ll look back and wonder if it was all real. ANTARCTICA WHEN TO GO November to March: Antarctica’s summer Late Dec & Jan: best for seeing penguin colonies Feb & Mar: best for whale watching

ANTARCTICA | 9 - Contact our Polar Travel Specialists on 0203 196 1000 or visit your local travel agent - And that’s all before you experience the mesmerising sight of whales waterspouting, lob-tailing and breaching the icy waters. But the scenery and wildlife aren’t all you’ll carry as memories from this outstanding destination. Just stepping foot on this barely touched continent is a momentous thrill, so you can imagine the emotion that comes from hiking its mountainous peaks, seeing its full splendour from a helicopter, or camping under canvas and experiencing the most authentic sense of disconnection from the rest of the world imaginable. And that’s still only the half of it. Get up close to this icy wonderland on thrilling Zodiac cruises, hop into a kayak to experience the incomparable serenity of carving your own watery path through towering icebergs, or join the bravest few in the polar plunge challenge and dare to jump into the freezing Antarctic sea. Antarctica is truly a place like no other, and the ultimate destination for anyone wanting to experience nature in all its magnificent, beautiful, powerful glory. which means its main focus is the time you’re spending off the ship – enjoying the indescribable sensations of being immersed in untouched nature and surrounded by iconic wildlife. It’s for this reason that Poseidon advocates the small ship concept and travels to these pristine destinations on its 114-guest expedition vessel, the M/V Sea Spirit. MAXIMUM TIME ASHORE The high manoeuvrability of M/V Sea Spirit doesn’t only mean it’s better able to navigate destinations like the narrow fjords of East Greenland or the small bays of Spitsbergen, but its small passenger capacity means you’ll be guaranteed maximum time ashore in the various sites in the Arctic and Antarctic where it’s not permitted for more than 100 visitors to land at one time – an important means of keeping these pristine destinations beautifully unspoiled. ONBOARD COMFORT It’s not only off-ship enjoyment that Poseidon provides, either. The company’s ‘edutainment’ programme and friendly atmosphere serve to ensure you’ll also be relishing every moment you’re aboard the ship. Polar experts and special guests provide fascinating lectures and presentations throughout your cruise, bringing the lesser-known worlds of the Arctic and Antarctica even closer to you. While, of course, the comfort of the ship and the personable service guarantees your quieter moments will be equally savoured. Polar expedition cruising is a cruise like no other. And there’s no denying – Poseidon Expeditions knows how to make people’s polar dreams come true. 36 | CANADIAN ARCTIC & THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE - Contact our Polar Travel Specialists on 0203 196 1000 or visit your local travel agent - Covering a staggering area of more than 550,000 square miles, the Canadian High Arctic has been a centurieslong stage to one of history's most sought-after achievements: finding the elusive Northwest Passage – a feat only accomplished in the early 1900s, and which to this day remains one of the hardest, most inaccessible and unforgiving sea passages in the world. Connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans via a series of frozen and formidable waterways through Canada's Arctic archipelago, the Northwest Passage has proven an insurmountable challenge for some of history's greatest and most famous explorers. Yet it's perhaps that very reason that it still holds such appeal to those with adventurous souls, and there's no denying – a journey into this astounding part of the frozen world is quite unlike any other. Rugged in its beauty, the landscapes of Arctic Canada are simply magnificent. It's a world of deep fjords, steep cliffs and mountains that stretch across the horizon. It's endless expanses of ice floes, icebergs and impossibly tall, sparkling blue glaciers. There are green lowlands, scenic bays, and epic tundra that extends further than the eye can see. And throughout it all is wildlife that will stop High in the northern extremities of the North American continent lie an incredible 36,000+ islands of frozen and foreboding wilderness – where humans are in the minority, wildlife abounds, but raw and powerful nature maintains the greatest control. CANADIAN ARCTIC & THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE WHEN TO GO Aug to Sep: Ice has reduced enough to cross the Northwest Passage Jul & Aug: Best months to spot wildlife

There are birds in their thousands, swooping overhead or nesting on cliffs. And of course, as the home to two thirds of the world's polar bear population, there's high chance you'll spot one of the magnificent creatures hunting for seals along the sea ice. A voyage into the Northwest Passage and Canada's magnificent frozen archipelago is truly a rewarding, inspiring, unique experience. Human populations are sparse, but the rich Inuit culture and incredible settlements, not to mention the astounding history and relics from the centuries of brave explorers that have passed, all serve to make a journey through this famed passage something that will truly enrich the soul and stay with you long after your journey ends. 44 | NORTH POLE - Contact our Polar Travel Specialists on 0203 196 1000 or visit your local travel agent - Shrouded in mystery and the pinnacle of every intrepid explorer's dream, the enigmatic North Pole sits quietly in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, 700km away from the nearest landfall; alone but for the vast swathes of ice stretching for hundreds of miles around it. The vast, thick, constantly moving sheets of ice that define this legendary location make it uninhabitable to most wildlife as well as humans. And it's a part of the world that very, very few people have ever set foot. Yet it's a destination that promises a truly life-changing experience to those lucky enough to reach it. Feeling, watching and hearing threemetre-thick ice split, snap and crack under the steady pressure of a powerful icebreaker's hull is an experience that simply can't be described. Just as gazing at the vast expanses of shifting ice, constantly transformed by the spectacular changing light of the Arctic sun, will stay in your memory forever. Wildlife at the North Pole is rare, but the polar bears, seals, Arctic foxes and whales you're likely to encounter on your way there are as spectacular as you'd imagine. And reaching that elusive northerly point – standing on the very top of the world, surrounded by an impossibly vast, exquisite icy panorama – is a sensation every bit as incredible as you'd expect. Belonging to no country, home to not a living soul, this is the most northerly point on Earth, where all lines of longitude converge, every single direction points south, and time – literally – doesn't exist. 46 | OUR ROUTES - Contact our Polar Travel Specialists on 0203 196 1000 or visit your local travel agent - WHAT DESTINATIONS DID YOU VISIT? I joined PONANT on their Great Austral Loop itinerary, which is a 16-day expedition to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica. HOW DID YOU GET THERE? I flew direct from London Heathrow to Buenos Aires, where I checked-in for an included overnight stay at the 5* Sofitel Recoleta. The next day all passengers flew together on a charter flight to Ushuaia (the southernmost city in Argentina), where we boarded our ship, L'Austral. FIRST TIME OR REPEAT TRIP? (IF REPEAT, WHAT WAS DIFFERENT THIS TIME?) This was my second voyage to Antarctica, but my first time visiting the Falklands and South Georgia. My first visit to Antarctica was in December; this time I went in November, which is one of the best times for wildlife in South Georgia. If you're interested in witnessing epic mating-rights battles between bull elephant seals, November is the time to visit! FAVOURITE LOCATION? It has to be Gold Harbour in South Georgia. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and glaciers, this beautiful bay has incredible, dramatic scenery, and the beach was absolutely packed with elephant seals and penguins! We visited in the evening as the sun was setting, which made for incredible photos. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT? The wildlife action at Gold Harbour! We witnessed an incredible brawl between two elephant seals, who traded blows and roared at one another while king penguins, dwarfed in comparison, tried not to get crushed in the chaos. PLAIN SAILING OR ANY SURPRISES? In the early part of the voyage we experienced pleasantly calm seas. Things were a little choppier between South Georgia and the Antarctic, but most passengers fared fine. The Drake was definitely more ‘shake’ than ‘lake’, although the crew told us it wasn't more than a 4/10! WHAT DO YOU MOST RECOMMEND PACKING OR PREPPING FOR? If you're a keen photographer, I would highly recommend a telephoto zoom lens. You can't always get right upclose to the wildlife, so this will deliver amazing shots. For the same reason, and if photography isn’t of interest, it’s worth investing in a good pair of binoculars. 8–10 x magnification work well. FAVOURITE PHOTO YOU TOOK? This one, of the king penguin colony at Fortuna Bay, South Georgia. To me, it captures the incredible organised chaos in which they live. Parents can find their chick among a crowd of a 1,000 identical others, using nothing but a unique vocal call! SUM UP YOUR TRIP IN THREE WORDS? Endlessly awe-inspiring.
