How to Use this Unit:

*Pages 3 through 6 could be shown on a smart board or printed and
displayed on the board for students to see as you begin the unit. They provide
a brief introduction to vocabulary words used in this unit.

*Page 7 students can fill out the “I Wonder…” page about earthworms before
they begin reading about them.

*Page 8 is a label the earthworm page.

*Page 9 is a Can, Have, Are sheet for earthworms.

*Page 10 is an opinion writing about worms.

*Pages 11-12 are a writing prompt about an earthworm adventure.

*Page 13 is an adjective page.

*Page 14-19 fact book that can be read with students.

*Page 20 is a True/False cut and paste.

*Page 21 provides a close reading passage with some basic information about
worms. Students have the opportunity to go back into the text and highlight
answers to text dependent questions. I have students read it the first time on
their own. I also give them some time to write down any tricky words,
interesting facts, or questions they may have. The next time we read it, the
teacher reads and discusses new information with them.

*Page 22 goes along with the close reading passage and has some
vocabulary questions. There is also a place for students to take notes during
the first time they read it.

*Page 23 is a writing prompt to go along with the previous 2 pages.

*Pages 24-25 provide students the opportunity to record the new information
they learned and write about worms.

*Page 26-earthworm observation.

My
Earthworm
Fact Book

Name: _______________________

Part 1

There are over 2,700 different
kinds of earthworms. They live
in soil in lawns, fields, and river

banks. They can dig up to six
feet down.

Earthworms have soft, slimy
bodies made for burrowing
and digging tunnels. They do
not have arms, legs, teeth,

bones, or eyes.

1

Part 2

The head end of an
earthworm is called the
anterior. There are no eyes,
but they can sense light and
dark. They have a tiny mouth
to eat dead leaves and plants

with.

Earthworms do not have a
nose or lungs. They breathe
through their skin as long as it
stays wet. This is why a rainy
day is perfect for earthworms.

2

Part 3

Their bodies are made up of
lots of tiny rings called

segments. When an earthworm
is fully grown it can have 120-

170 segments.

Earthworms have tiny hairs or
bristles called setae. The setae

help the worm move along
through the soil.

3

Part 4

They have 5 hearts that pump
blood throughout their bodies.
They have a gizzard close to

their mouths to help them
process food. Sand and soil get

in the gizzard as they eat.
When it mixes with water it
grinds together and breaks

down food.

Earthworms have a thick, light
colored band called a clitellum.
The band starts near the front

and will work its way to the
end of the worm and get
released. This holds the eggs

4 and acts like a cocoon for the
eggs.

Part 5

The tail end of the worm is
called the posterior.

Earthworms squeeze their
muscles to help them move

through the dirt.

Earthworms are important
because they move nutrients
through the soil as they dig
tunnels. They mix up the soil as
they move along. This helps
people grow better fruits and

5 vegetables.

Earthworms

Have you ever gone outside on a rainy day and the ground
was covered with earthworms? Earthworms need to keep
their skin moist in order to survive. They breathe through their
skin. The rain helps worms move across land without drying
out. On a sunny day, the worms will try to stay underground so
they do not dry out and die. They do not have eyes, but they
can sense the light and move away from it.

Earthworms are helpful to gardeners. They tunnel through
the soil and mix up the nutrients that help plants grow. The
tunnels also help water and air move through the soil. Worms
have tiny bristles on the rings of their bodies to help them move
through the soil. They eat dirt as they move through the ground

Prove it!
Use a crayon to highlight why worms stay away from light.
Use another crayon to highlight how earthworms breathe.
Use another crayon to highlight how tunnels are helpful.
