COUSD new you need to know

Dear Charter Oak Unified School District Families, As we celebrate Black History Month in February, we recognize the profound impact African Americans have had on our nation’s history, culture, and progress. From trailblazers in science, education, and the arts to leaders in civil rights, government, and beyond, their contributions have shaped the world we live in today. One shining example is our very own Board of Trustee, Kristin McGuire, who sits as the first elected African American in our Board’s history. This month, let us honor the achievements of African Americans, learn from their stories, and continue fostering a school community where every student is valued, supported, and inspired to achieve. As we celebrate Black history, let us also celebrate the rich diversity within our own community. Our students come from a multitude of backgrounds, each shaping their unique stories and perspectives. These diverse experiences enrich our classrooms, broaden our understanding of the world, and make us a stronger, more compassionate community. We are immensely proud of our diverse student body, recognizing that it is our collective strength. At COUSD, we firmly believe that every student deserves a safe, supportive, and nurturing learning environment where they can thrive, regardless of their background, experiences, or beliefs. We are dedicated to providing the resources and support necessary to ensure every student feels valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential. Sincerely, Danny Kim, Ed.D. We are thrilled to announce that Arrow High School has once again been recognized as a Model Continuation High School (MCHS) for 2025 by the California Department of Education! This prestigious honor highlights Arrow's unwavering commitment to providing an exceptional and personalized learning experience for its students. Arrow High School's mission is to empower students to take ownership of their education and foster personal growth. Through standards-based instruction, students develop essential academic skills and work towards credit recovery and meeting graduation requirements. The school's dedicated staff has implemented expanded course offerings, to ensure students receive an engaging and comprehensive education. Beyond academics, Arrow focuses on building a strong sense of community and increasing student attendance. The school's small size allows for individualized learning, ensuring each student receives the support they need. A key component of Arrow's success is the implementation of Individualized Learning Plans, which map each student's academic journey and guide them towards future achievements. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond recognized 74 schools out of 429 statewide for this honor, emphasizing the crucial role continuation schools play for students who need a less traditional school model. According to Thurmond, MCHSs give students more than a diploma. The teachers and administrators provide students with a student-centered approach that meets their needs and with opportunities to explore options beyond high school, preparing students for the future whether they choose to pursue further education or join the workforce. Arrow High School's recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of its staff. The school's commitment to providing a supportive and enriching environment ensures that every student has the opportunity to succeed. To achieve this designation, Arrow underwent a rigorous application and review process, including a site visit by the California Department of Education, accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and the submission of supportive letters from parents and students. Charter Oak Unified School District is incredibly proud of Arrow High School's achievement and its commitment to empowering students to reach their full potential. We congratulate the entire Arrow community on this well-deserved recognition! If you are an undocumented student in California who meets AB 540 requirements (attending three or more years of California high school and graduating), you should apply for financial aid using the CA Dream Act Application. Your immigration status will not be reported to other agencies. Key Steps to Applying for Financial Aid with the CA Dream Act Application: Gather Your Documents: Before starting the application, gather the necessary information: Any tax information you may have (even if you didn't file; having records of income can be helpful). Records of any financial assistance you've received. Information about the colleges you are interested in attending. Create an Account: Visit dream.csac.ca.gov/ to create an account. This is where you will complete and submit your application. Complete the CA Dream Act Application: Carefully fill out all sections of the application. Double-check all information for accuracy. Errors can cause delays. Submit and Review: Once you've reviewed everything, submit the application. You'll receive a confirmation. Don't Forget These Important Resources: Contact Your School Counselor: Your high school counselor is your best resource for FAFSA and CA Dream Act application assistance, as well as general financial aid advice. They can answer your questions and guide you through the process. Attend Financial Aid Workshops: Like the one on February 24, at 5:30 p.m. in the MPR at COHS. Apply for Cal Grants: California residents should also complete the Cal Grant application through the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) website (csac.ca.gov). The FAFSA and CA Dream Act application will transfer some of your information, but you'll still need to create an account and complete the application. The state priority deadline for Cal Grant applications for the 2025-26 academic year is March 3, 2025, and the Community College deadline is September 2, 2025. So, apply ASAP! Apply for Community Scholarships: Don't overlook local scholarship opportunities! Charter Oak Community Scholarship Foundation: If you're a college-bound student with a 3.0 GPA or higher, this scholarship is for you! Download the application here and submit it by March 7, 2025. Capri Deli Scholarship: Capri Deli, in partnership with Covina Rotary, is offering a $3,000 scholarship to a senior pursuing college or trade school. Apply here before the March 14, 2025, deadline. We encourage all COUSD seniors to take advantage of these resources and apply for financial aid as early as possible. Investing in your education is an investment in your future. We are here to support you every step of the way! College planning is underway for many of our seniors, and securing financial aid is a critical step. To help you navigate this process and make your higher education dreams a reality, we've compiled some helpful tips. Depending on your residency status, there are two main financial aid applications you'll want to explore: FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid): This is the standard application for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens. Completing the FAFSA opens doors to federal grants, loans, and work-study programs, as well as many state and college-specific scholarships. CA Dream Act application: For undocumented students who meet AB 540 eligibility requirements, the CA Dream Act Application is essential. This application allows eligible students to apply for state financial aid, including Cal Grants. Key Steps to Applying for Financial Aid for FAFSA applicants: Create an FSA ID: Both you and your parent/guardian (if applicable) will need an FSA ID (Federal Student Aid ID) to log in and sign the FAFSA. Create your FSA ID well in advance at studentaid.gov. This is the same website to use for the FAFSA application. To learn how to create an FSA ID, click here. 1. Gather Your Documents: Before starting either application, gather the necessary information: 2. Social Security Numbers (if applicable) Federal Income Tax Returns (including W-2s and 1099s) Bank Statements Student's Driver's License (if applicable) Alien Registration Number or Permanent Resident Card (if applicable) 3.Complete the Appropriate Application at studentaid.gov Submit and Review: Carefully review all information before submitting your application. Errors can cause delays but can be fixed even after you submit. After submitting, you'll receive a confirmation and a Student Aid Report (SAR), which you should review for accuracy. 4. The good news is that the process of filing out the FAFSA was simplified last year making it easier than ever for families to get financial aid and takes less than an hour to complete. CA Dream Act Applicants: The CA Dream Act Application allows undocumented students who meet AB 540 eligibility requirements to apply for state financial aid, including Cal Grants and other institutional aid. This application is separate from the FAFSA and is specifically designed for undocumented students. Decoding Financial Support for College

Kindness Week at Charter Oak Unified provides a great opportunity for us to be intentional about incorporating acts of compassion into our curriculum. From heartfelt notes to thoughtful gestures, our elementary school campuses overflowed with kindness, demonstrating the power of positive action. Our students took the Kindness Pledge to heart, committing to spread kindness and make a difference. This commitment translated into countless acts of kindness, big and small. Students shared kind words with their peers and teachers, brightening their days and fostering a supportive atmosphere. Our teachers and staff felt the love as students showed their appreciation with special acts of kindness, recognizing the dedication and care they provide every day. Creativity blossomed as students unleashed their artistic talents, creating amazing kindness banners. These colorful creations, filled with messages of positivity and compassion, served as visual reminders of the importance of kindness. The fun and engaging "Spin to Win" activity added an element of celebration, rewarding students for sharing their kind acts. The "Kindness Is..." essay and art contest showcased the incredible talent and compassion of our students. Their inspiring entries, reflecting on the meaning of kindness, demonstrated a deep understanding of empathy and community. These powerful expressions served as a reminder that kindness can be expressed in countless ways. Glen Oak Elementary, which celebrated Kindness Week in November, took the opportunity to organize a Caring Drive, demonstrating the true spirit of giving. Their generous collection of clothing, blankets, toiletries, food, and cookware will make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. This initiative exemplified the power of collective action and the importance of supporting our community. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in Kindness Week! Your enthusiasm and dedication made this week truly special. A WE EK OF KINDNE S S BLOOMS ACROS S CHART ER OAK UNI F I ED
