Friends of Billerica Recreation

Would you like to play a role in the continued success of our Recreation Department? We are currently seeking

individuals interested in joining our “Friends of Billerica Recreation” committee. This committee is an integral part

in ensuring our ability to grow our special events, and seek alternative funding sources to keep such events at a

minimum cost. Additionally, funds raised by the Friends are used to directly fund our Financial Aid/Scholarship

opportunities for residents in need. A commitment to becoming a Friend simply consists of attending occasional

meetings, and a willingness to volunteer at our special events. If you’re passionate about our department and

would like to be a part of continuing to take Billerica Recreation to the next level, please let us know! Those with

interest in learning more are encouraged to contact Recreation Director, Dave Grubb, directly.

Summer Inclusion Program

Here at Billerica Rec, we believe all children should have equal access to summer camp, regardless
of ability. We are working hard to build a team of inclusion support staff to help facilitate summer

programs for children who may require additional attention to participate successfully.

If your child has a disability, an IEP or 504 plan at school then this may be an appropriate option for
them!

Please reach out to Laurel at [email protected] to apply or with any questions you may
have about our emerging inclusion program or how we may be able to support your child.

Therapeutic Recreation, also known as TR or Rec Therapy, is the practice of using leisure and recreation
to improve quality of life and functioning across all domains for people with disabling conditions and
different abilities.

Here at Billerica Recreation Department, we are excited to begin building a Community TR Division.
Therapeutic Recreation in the community can look like a variety of different things, but our vision for the
future includes adaptive programs for all ages, inclusion support services, specialized summer programs,
and sensory friendly components to our larger scale family events.

All programs and intake processes are facilitated by our Assistant Director who is a CTRS (Certified
Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) and has many years of experience in the field. If you have any
questions at all about Therapeutic Recreation programs and our path forward, or whether a program is a
good fit for your family member, please don’t hesitate to contact us and ask for Laurel!

Registration Process:

1. Participant Intake Packet: All participants must have a completed packet on file before attending
programs. This information allows us to plan for safety, help participants meet their goals, and
modify programs as necessary.

2. Intake Meeting: It is important that we speak with a caregiver and/or meet participants before their
first time at program. This can be done on the phone, in person, or via zoom. This conversation will
give us the opportunity to ask follow up questions and gather all the information we need.

3. Program Registration and Payment: Once we all know that the program is a good fit, go ahead and
sign up so we can have some fun!

A note on Summer Inclusion:

An application for inclusion support and a parent packet will be available on our website by Mid-April
so that we can work with you on how to best support your child in our summer programs.

Help Wanted!

We can’t grow our TR programs without people like you to help us! Do you have experience with special
population, or an interest in learning how to work with people with different abilities, and want to have
fun getting to know some of your amazing neighbors?! We are looking for qualified adults ages 18+ to fill
a variety of positions, including:

- Adaptive Program Leaders and Support Staff - Inclusion Aides - Sports Coaches
- Volunteers - Special Event Help

Email [email protected] or call the Rec Department and ask for Laurel with any questions,
