State, Local & National Parks
We are fortunate to feature a network of parks providing green space and recreational and sporting opportunities to
visitors and residents of all ages.
LEISURE TRAILS
Nassau County has approximately 40 miles of casual and advanced bike trails. The Timucuan/Amelia Island Multi-Use Trail
System is being extended from the Talbot Island State Park north to Peters Point.

AMELIA ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
Built in 1838, it is the state’s oldest lighthouse. The tower was first constructed in 1820 on Cumberland Island, Georgia.
In 1834, a group of mariners petitioned Congress to move the lighthouse to Amelia Island. In 1838, it was dismantled and
reconstructed on Amelia Island. The site is open to visitors through the City Parks and Recreation Department.

AMELIA ISLAND STATE PARK
The Amelia Island State Park protects over 200 acres of unspoiled wilderness along the southern tip of Amelia Island.
Beautiful beaches, salt marshes, and coastal maritime forests provide visitors a glimpse of the original Florida. Amelia
Island State Park is one of the few locations on the east coast that offers horseback riding on the beach and riding tours
along the shoreline. Fishermen can surf fish along the shoreline or they can wet their lines from the mile-long George
Crady Bridge fishing pier which spans Nassau Sound. Visitors can stroll along the beach, look for shells or watch the wildlife.
For horseback tour reservations, contact Kelly Seahorse Ranch at 904-491-5166.
Admission: A fee is charged

CUMBERLAND ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE
Located just north of Amelia Island; Cumberland Island is the southernmost barrier island in Georgia. You can reach
Cumberland Island by boat from St. Mary’s, Georgia. The park features fishing (GA license required) hiking, birding, shelling,
shark tooth hunting, wildlife watching, touring historical areas (Dungeness, Plum Orchard, First African Baptist Church),
visiting the National Park Service museum, sunbathing, swimming, junior Ranger program and photography. A total of 50
miles of hiking trails meander through maritime forests, interior wetlands, historic districts, marsh ecosystems and the
beautiful beaches. Trails are accessible only by foot.
Admission: A fee is charged

FORT CLINCH STATE PARK
A part of the park system since 1935, Fort Clinch is one of the most well preserved 19th century forts in the country.
Although no battles were fought here, it was garrisoned during both the Civil and Spanish-American wars. Daily tours with
period re-enactors depicting garrison life bring the fort to life for visitors. Sunbathing, swimming, and beachcombing are
popular activities at the beach. Anglers can fish from the pier or take advantage of excellent surf fishing. Hikers and
bicyclists can enjoy a six-mile trail through the park. Self-guided nature trails provide opportunities to learn about and
observe native plants and wildlife. A full-facility campground and a youth camping area provide overnight accommodations.
Located off Atlantic Avenue.
Admission: Park Admission plus Fort Admission

FORT GEORGE ISLAND CULTURAL STATE PARK
Traveling south, just before the Mayport Ferry is Fort George Island. Native Americans feasted here, colonists built a fort
and the Smart Set of the 1920’s came for vacations. Fort George Island was named for a 1736 fort built to defend southern
Georgia. Today’s visitors come for boating, fishing, off-road bicycling and hiking. Key attractions are the restored Ribault
Club and Kingsley Plantation (see below). A guided tour of Fort George Island is available from the Ribault Club and visits
Kingsley Plantation while traveling along more than 3 miles of maritime forest, abundant with plant and animal life.

KINGSLEY PLANTATION
It is a part of the National Park Service’s Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve. It is located on Fort George Island,
south of Amelia Island, and represents a Sea Island cotton plantation of the antebellum South. Zephaniah Kingsley resided
on the plantation, one of four major plantation complexes he owned in Florida, with his wife, Anna Madgigine Jai, and
their four children. From 1818 to 1839, the slaves owned by Kingsley grew Sea Island cotton, sugar cane, corn and citrus
on Fort George Island. From 35 to 100 men, women and children lived in the slave community at the plantation.

THE RIBAULT CLUB
Operated by the Florida Park Service and the National Park Service, this historic building contains exhibits and a bookstore.
It opened in 1928 as a wintertime recreational resort which offered members opportunities for golf, tennis, hunting, fishing,
yachting and various other activities. Membership decreased during the depression and it eventually closed. It became
part of the park service in 1989.

HUGUENOT MEMORIAL PARK
Part of the City of Jacksonville’s Oceanfront park system. Located on A1A south of Amelia Island, this park offers waterfront
campsites, a bird observation area, and gorgeous views of some of North Florida's remaining natural areas await visitors
to Huguenot Memorial Park. In addition to the natural beauty of the area, the park also offers swimming, fishing, surfing,
a boat launch area, picnic shelters, restrooms, and shower facilities.

BIG TALBOT ISLAND STATE PARK
Big Talbot is the first island, going south, after Amelia Island. It is primarily a natural preserve providing a premier location
for nature study, bird watching and photography. Explore the diverse island habitats by hiking Blackrock Trail to the
shoreline, Big Pine Trail to the marsh or Old Kings Highway and Jones Cut through the maritime forest. Launch a boat from
the north end of the island to fish and tour the salt marsh or rent a kayak and take a guided paddle tour with Kayak Amelia,
888-30-KAYAK (904-305-2925). Kayak tours require advanced reservations. Or visit The Bluffs and enjoy a picnic at one of
the pavilions overlooking the water or take a quick stroll down the trail to Boneyard Beach. The unique beach is famous
for the salt-washed skeletons of live oak and cedar trees that once grew near the shore.
Admission: A fee is charged
(904) 251-2320 | www.floridastateparks.org
LITTLE TALBOT ISLAND STATE PARK
Located going south, beyond Big Talbot Island, Little Talbot has more than five miles of beautiful, white sandy beaches,
Little Talbot Island is one of the few remaining undeveloped barrier islands in Northeast Florida. Maritime forests, desert-
like dunes, and undisturbed salt marshes on the western side of the island allow for hours of nature study and relaxation.
The diverse habitats in the park host a wealth of wildlife for viewing including river otters, marsh rabbits, bobcats, and a
variety of native and migratory birds. Surrounding surf and tidal streams present excellent fishing for bluefish, striped bass,
redfish, flounder mullet and sheepshead. Other activities include hiking, kayaking, beachcombing, surfing and picnicking.
Beachside picnic pavilions are available for use by park visitors and can be reserved for a fee. A full-facility campground is
located along the eastern salt marshes of Myrtle Creek. Kayak rentals, guided paddle tour and Segway tours are available.
Admission: A fee is charged
