2018 Term 2 | Issue 1 2019 Term 2 | Issue 1 Page 1

Welcome back for Term 2.

We hope you had a relaxing break and are ready for another busy term.

Term 1 was hectic for all the Literacy Consultants and it was great that many schools were asking us to come and work with their
staff. We love coming and interacting with students and teachers.

Most of our work in Term 1 focused on Sharp Reading, Programming and Assessing with the WA Curriculum -English, EAL/D
Progress Maps, Scaffolding Adolescent Literacy, Grammar, Spelling, Talking Your Way into Writing and General Capabilities.

The Literacy team offers support in a range of literacy areas so feel free to contact us if we can be of any help. We look forward
to hearing from you and working with you in Term 2

Best wishes for a great term.

BORN STORYTELLERS– PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN CREATIVE WRITING

The Born Storytellers started out as an idea to bring to students the skills and knowledge that writers employ to make fiction
real—a field of study we termed Story Craft. The original program, delivered over 20 weeks, centred on ten specific aspects of
narrative writing that are critical to the writer's success as a creator of story and, in a structured, pedagogically sound program
of learning, took students on a journey that addressed both creative and critical theories and practice that underpin the craft.
The Born Storytellers grew into a unique combination which saw students engage with theories of the design, formation and
structural synergy of story—and then apply those theories as practical techniques in an experience that unlocked creativity,
discipline, and confidence resulting in authorial status. As Creative Writing has developed into its own discipline of study, there
is a growing recognition that mastery of its skills has wide economic benefits for future work. There is a need for more teachers
to develop as writers, and teach Creative Writing based on the knowledge and skills of Story Craft. Begin your journey to be a
teacher of the future by securing your place at one of these Creative Writing Masterclass PDs for ATAR English teachers.

Good News Story

Reporting the Weather Goes Worldwide

The Junior Primary and Early Years classes at Purnululu Aboriginal Independent Community School (located between Halls
Creek and Kununurra have been studying the weather. Thanks to the Principal, Corrie Baxter and the teachers, Amy Stals and
Amanda Rowe for sharing.

Purnululu

The Junior Primary and Early Years classes at Purnululu School have been learning all about the weather. They have been
observing and describing our weather in Frog Hollow and studying the Gija seasons.

We’re in Frog Hollow. My name is Virginiah and we’re in Frog Hollow and

Good News Story Continued

We had the opportunity to meet students from Northcote Primary School (Melbourne) via Skype. Each student in our class de-
veloped their own questions and interviewed the Northcote Primary School students to learn about their current weather and
seasons. As a class project, students became junior weather reporters and made a special Frog Hollow weather report to share
with Northcote Primary School.

We are in Jadagen season, it’s wet season.

Miss Corrie shared our weather report on the Purnululu School Facebook book page. The video was shared over 300 times and
viewed by over 22000 people all over the world. Our class is very proud of our efforts and what we have learned about our
weather and weather in other places around the world. This project gave us the opportunity to integrate Gija Language and
Culture, Literacy,
Digital Technologies, Science and HaSS. The students enjoyed every minute of it and they are very proud of their efforts.
Watch the video here: https://www.facebook.com/purnululuschool/

In Jadagen, the trees get big and green and the animals get fat.

In Jadagen season we like to go swimming and fishing.
