What exactly is mental health? Mental health is a state of mental wellness wherein a
person experiences happiness, positive relationships with others, has a sense of
control, and a capacity for independent judgment. Mental health, defined in the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) III as "the ability to
recognise and deal appropriately with changes affecting behaviour, emotions, skills,
needs, and feelings". The definition of mental health is not inclusive of the range
of related conditions such as anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive
disorders, depression, psychosis, bipolar and manic depression. Mental health also
encompasses a patient’s capacity for happiness and well being, social interaction and
interpersonal relationships, creative and vocational abilities, functioning in work and
home environments, health-related behaviors, and time perception.Mental health is

The term ‘mental health’; has different
meanings for different people and in different
contexts. For instance, for the adolescent and
young adult, it refers to the capacity for
emotional and social well-being, appropriate
thoughts and beliefs about oneself, appropriate
behaviour, and interpersonal relationships. In
contrast, the concept of mental health for the
geriatric and older adult covers the ability to regulate and cope with changes in cognitive
functioning, emotions, behavior, relationships, and experiences. The concept of mental
health is therefore a relative entity that is determined by each individual’s experience

health. It helps determine how to deal with stress and how to cope with everyday
