Theoram Pythagoras
• Pythagoras was Greek scholar and
philosopher ca 548 BC to 495 BC.
• Known as “the father of numbers,
his teachings covered a variety of
areas such as mathematics, music,
astronomy and topograpy.
• Born in Samos, he is best known
for the Phthagoras Theorem
which bears his name.
The Theorem states :
• Given a right triangle with leg
lengths a,b, and hypotenuse
length c.
• The area of the square whose side
length is the hypotenuse(c)
• Is equal to the sum of the areas of
the squares whose side lengths are
the legs (a) and (b).
In other words:
a2+ b2 = c2
Pythagoras (582-500)
His philosopy was rooted in mathematics.
He discovered the mathematics basis of
music, and saw the same patterns in the
movements of the planets.
His followers believed in reincarnation, they
were vegetarians, avoided wine,swearing
by the gods, sexual misconduct, excesses
and frivolity. Womenwere treated as equals.
• Pythagoras was born around 570 BC and
passed away around 495 BC
• He was a philosopher and mathematician
• he was famous for his Pythagorean
Theorem
• He had a teacher named Themistoclea. He
taught him principles of ethics.
• He traveled to different places to learn, such
as Egypt.
• He lived in Southern Italy during the 6 century BC
• He was considered the first true mathematician.
• He was first to teach that the earth was a sphere that
revolves around the sun
• He proved the Pythagoras Theorem (named after
him)
