a message from the director

Happy Fall Ya'll! As we welcome our children back to school, we also welcome them back to our affordable,
high-quality, and fun before and after school programming. Offered at various campuses in partnership with
the Pasadena Unified School District, the After School Adventures Program is one of our largest and most
impactful programs. We also offer after school programming at the La Pintoresca Teen Education Center for
students age 12 to 17 with specialized teen programming focused on personal enrichment and academic
success. We’re proud to support our students and working families through these and other programs.

We are also excited to welcome back youth sports with fall soccer, flag football, and volleyball. Our goal
is to provide a supportive, recreational athletics focused on technique and skill building for all skill levels.
We hope to get as many children and teens as possible participating in our fall youth sports programs. To
support this goal, the City of Pasadena has reduced participation fees to $10 for Pasadena residents under
age 18 and Pasadena Unified School District students. Also, we are excited to introduce our youth sports
scholarship program for non-city programs (see page 14). Fees for adults and youth who reside outside of
Pasadena and do not attend PUSD school will remain at our usual rates.

Our popular cultural celebrations are always a highlight of the year. Join us in celebrating Latino Heritage
Month in September and October. The Latino Heritage Planning Committee has planned great activities and
events for the whole family, and all events are free!

Brenda Harvey-Williams Rest assured, we continue to work closely with our Pasadena Public Health Department to implement
department Director COVID-19 safety protocols. We hope to see you enjoying our parks and facilities this fall. If you have any
questions about programming or need more information, please contact us at
[email protected], or call (626) 744-4386.

MEASURE L:

PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICES
CONTINUATION MEASURE

FACT SHEET

On November 8, 2022, Pasadena voters will have a choice. The City Council has placed
Measure L, the Pasadena Public Library Services Continuation Measure on the ballot so
voters can decide on the maintenance of a special revenue source for Pasadena Public
Library programs and services. If voters approve Measure L, it is expected to continue
to generate approximately $2.8 million annually for 15 years in dedicated, locally
controlled dollars for Pasadena's libraries.

WHY AM I HEARING ABOUT IT NOW?
In June of 1993, voters chose to save the Pasadena Public Library’s existing services and operations when they
overwhelmingly approved a Special Library Tax. Fourteen years later, in June 2007, residents came together once
again and voted 80.3% in support of the Measure to continue services provided by the Pasadena Public Library.
After almost 15 years since its last renewal, the library revenue source will expire in February 2023, and can only
be continued by a public vote.

PRIORITY TO PRESERVE AND MAINTAIN SERVICE LEVELS TO RESIDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES
If the existing funding through the Pasadena Public Library Services Continuation Measure, or Measure L, is not
maintained, the City would lose approximately 20% of the library budget or $2.8 million annually, which may
lead to the closure of neighborhood library branches, a reduction of books and collections, a reduction in
library hours, the loss of qualified librarians, and cuts in other significant
programs and services offered to our community.

IMPORTANT INSTITUTION

Close to nine-in-ten Pasadenans agree that libraries play a critical role in educating our community’s
children and youth. Three-quarters state local students rely on the libraries to get educational
