G10 Personal Project - 2021 - Booklet

The personal project provides an opportunity for students to undertake
an independent and age-appropriate exploration into an area of personal
interest. Through the process of inquiry, action and reflection, students are
encouraged to demonstrate and strengthen their ATL skills. The personal
nature of the project is important; the project allows students to explore an
area that motivates and interests them. Students choose what they want to
focus on, which can be an existing or a new interest, choose how to achieve
their goal, and create their own success criteria for the product. The project
provides an excellent opportunity for students to produce a truly personal and
often creative product and to demonstrate a consolidation of their learning in
the MYP. (IB Personal Project Guide, p.5)

Students in Grade 10 at WISS spend the first semester exploring a pathway that
is personally meaningful to them. Students begin by identifying a discipline
that inspires interest and enthusiasm. To complete the Personal Project, they
use and refine their ATL skills: research, communication, self-management,
thinking and social skills. These skills are strengthened as they create their
product and complete a report focusing on the product, their learning goal,
and the ATLs used. Students at WISS enjoy the opportunity to explore new
ideas and expand their passions. Welcome to our Personal Project Fair!

Alexa

My name is Alexa. My goal for my personal project is to express different
cultures/races through art. My final product are face portraits of my friends
representing their own culture/race. I choose to do this topic because culture
plays a big role in a persons life and society, it is culture that shapes a person
into who they are, gives us an identity as well as a sense of belonging. I wanted to
express this through art because art brings different people together, it allows
people from different places/cultures communicate with each other through
artworks. I have learned new things about many different cultures that I didn’t
know about, each culture has have their own traditions and different way of
things. I want to thank my supervisor Ms. Guay for giving me good advice and
support as well as my friends and family.

Alex

My goal for my Personal Project was to make a car model, I want to make car
model because I’m very interested in cars. My final product is to make a vintage
car in 1970 years, In the process of making it; I have learned how to use 3D
printing and Fusion 3D max (A software can connect to 3D printing to make car
model) , also I have learned many automobile parts in the car like the engine,
balance beam and many parts that are important to the car. My supervisor was
Mr. Ness, his design teacher and he gives me a lot of advice of my project and
my model in 3D max.

Arthur

My name is Arthur, I was born in Singapore, And I like computer hardware and
software a lot. So I will like to enter a job with a computer. Choosing parts of the
computer to make the balance. And assemble computer to be able to run some
programs. My final product is going to be a computer with an ITX model which
can be carried around easily. But, first, I have to learn the hardware, assemble
them, and install a Windows system. By now, I have learned the knowledge of
the hardware and how to build them. My supervisor is Mr. David.

Ashton

My name is Ashton, I am 15 years old and from Malaysia. For this years MYP
Personal Project I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the
world of electronics. Hence, I chose for my goal to be able to have a competent
understanding of electronics, circuits and how they work. To help me achieve
the goal that I set, I chose my product to be a UV sanitizing and wireless phone
charging box. I am very thankful for my Personal Project supervisor Mr. Smith
because he has not only helped me to learn many things throughout this project
but also assisted me in fully creating my desired product. With his assistance
and my dedication I have developed my understanding about a wide variety
of topics such as 3D printing, creating a wireless charger, using UV light to
sanitize items and understanding how multiple electronic components come
together to create one big product. I hope everyone enjoys their time here at
the Personal Project Fair as I’m sure everyone has put in a lot of work into their
products this year.

Bianca

My name is Bianca, and I’m in Grade 10 green. My goal for my Personal Project
was to learn how to extract DNA from different fruit at home in order to expand
my knowledge on DNA. My final product will be a booklet that will teach others
how to easily extract DNA from different fruit with materials they already have
at home. During the process so far I have learned how to extract DNA and also
how to manage my time better, as I’ve had a few mishaps along the way. I have
also learned that communication with my supervisor as well as other teachers
is very important. I would really like to thank my supervisor Ms. Cha for giving
me advice and helping me all throughout the process.

Bibiana

My name is Bibiana Lee, and I’m in Grade 10 Red. My goal for my Personal Project
was to arrange my own multi-track cover by ear of “Stay” by Justin Bieber and
The Kid LAROI, using acoustic guitar, recorder, flute, and a Korean traditional
drum, edited and mixed in GarageBand. My final product is an MP3 cover of the
song recorded in GarageBand and arranged in a video with a picture compilation
of myself performing it. Throughout this process, I was able to learn two new
instruments, how to edit in GarageBand, and how to arrange multiple parts by
ear. My supervisor was my Music teacher Ms. Mirtic, and she helped me a lot
with my project and giving me ideas when I was struggling. I really want to say
a big thank you to Ms. Mirtic for helping me and cheering me on.

Billy

My name is Billy Du from Grade 10. The goal for my personal project was to
learn how to transcribe bluegrass guitar playing into sheet music and guitar
tab. So, I decided my final product was going to create a book of transcriptions
for guitar playing by professional guitar artists who have been well known
and contain major influences on the genre of Bluegrass. From the process,
I have learned the technique required to make my product such as correct
music theory, the ability to use software, and usage of each music notations.
And used thinking skills, research skills, and planning skills throughout the
process. To have support and correction help on music, my supervisor was the
secondary music teacher Ms. Mirtic. hope my final product will be useful and
effective to all who love playing guitar and music. Thank you!

Brian

My Name is Brian Wang, born in 23, February, 2006 in Shanghai. My personal
project goal is to raise awareness for all Betta Fish players (the community that
have betta fish at home). My final product is a tutorial website that created by
wix.com. I have learned different facts about betta fish and I have practiced my
research skill in these days. During the process, I learned about how to create
a website using wix.com. I hope that my website is helpful for other betta fish
players. In all, I want to say thank you to my supervisor Ms. Rosalinda, thank you
for everything you have done for me.

Betta fish-a type of fish that people can easily buy from pet market.

Daniel

Hi my name is Daniel Rodriguez Llaca and my goal for my personal project
was to design and create a somewhat portable normal sized ping pong table.
Because of the lack of time, I wasn’t able to create the real original sized ping
pong table so I decided to build a miniature version of the portable ping pong
table to show what the table will eventually look like once I build it. With a lot
of help from my supervisor Mr. Grimwood, I was to successfully achieve my
learning goal which was to learn how to design and create a portable ping pong
table. I am very thankful to have had Mr. Grimwood by my side on this project
and I don’t know how I would’ve done it without him.

David

My name is David HuangFu, my project goal was to help people that want a
computer has no experience about it to choose the correct parts base on their
need, therefore my final product will be a website that guides people with PC
building. During the process time management was a huge challenge for me, it
was hard to keep everything on track when there’s a lot of other tasks happening
at the same time, I was struggling a lot in the beginning, but I managed to learn
how to use my time effectively. I look forward to rest of this project and hope
to learn a lot of new stuff. I’d also like to say thanks to my supervisor, Ms. Wu,
who has supported me a lot during this process.

Emily

My name is Emily Yoo, and I am in grade 10 green. My goal for my Personal
Project was to identify the development of Korean culture in song lyrics from
1990 until now. My final product is a video explaining the findings of what I have
identified throughout the whole project. During the process I have learned
more about my own country’s culture in terms of their development that was
portrayed through song lyrics, which I had no idea before I started this project.
Also, time management was a huge part as well. I had quite a bit of a trouble in
the beginning managing my time, though I learned how to distribute my time
equally for each aspect of the project in terms of writing the report and making
the product throughout the journey. My supervisor was my Korean teacher,
Ms. Lee, who supported me with all she can, keeping me on the right track.

Emma

My name is Emma, I’m from Argentina and I am in grade 10 red. The goal I have
set myself is related to a subject I have been passionate about for the past year.
Since I started studying about climate change, green house effect and the
consequences it has on our planet I have been considering making changes to
my life style now or in the future. Indeed, when I own a house, I would live in an
ecofriendly way. I thought that to make my impact deeper, I could encourage
other people to make the change too. For this I decided to make a website with
the step by step on how to change into an ecofriendly life style. My supervisor
is Mr. Hobson he has been helping me throughout this process making sure
that I succeed in this project.

Evan

My name is Evan Roh from South Korea my project is about raising awareness
of illegal windows keys. My goal is that grade 10,11,12 students can avoid using
the illegal keys. My final product is a brochure that is about illegal keys and how
to avoid using it. From this project I learned about how to research accurately.
My supervisor Ms. Kim helped to organize the project and ended up finishing
my projects before the deadlines.

Gordon

Hi, my name is Gordon Lin, and my assessor is Ms. Wang.

My goal for the personal project was to look into the different versions of
Chinese Legends, such as the legends from the ancient texts, or the legends
of the different religions, or the legends now flowing around online in the form
of web fiction.

My product for the Personal Project is that I will write a book about characters
that appear in Chinese legends and stories. I have chosen to write from the
perspective of online Web Fiction when I write about the characters. I will be
writing about characters such as NüWua(女娲), and I will write some fun facts
about them

Gustav

My name is Gustav, I am from Germany and have been at WISS for 7 years now.
My Goal for my Personal Project was to make a leopard Gecko enclosure. My
final product is still being made and not completed yet but I have learned how
to use the 3D CAD design software fusion 360 to design the Rocky environment
for the enclosure. My supervisor was Mr. Smith and he has helped out with
explaining the CAD software in person which allowed me to ask more specific
question. Big Thanks to Mr. Smith again.

Helen

My name is Helen Ma, I have been in WISS for two years.

My goal for my Personal Project was to explore whether human memory is likely
to be tampered with; and explore the pathology of Alzheimer’s to understand
why the elderly people will have such diseases.

My final product is a popular science article, and I hope to help people
understand this information in my own way.

I also need to give a great thanks
to Ms Liu. Ms.Shichun Liu is my
supervisor. She help me a lot
in my report written and the
product ideas .We often discuss
together, and whenever I am at
a loss, she can always give me
the best advice and help me
complete my product.

And with Ms.Liu’s help, in the process of doing the project, in addition to the
professional knowledge, my other skills have also made great progress (such
as search skills, time management, etc.). These skills will give me great help in
my future study and life.

Ian

My name is Ian Ahrens. My goal for my personal project was to expand my
knowledge about dogs, how they act, and how to train them. I presented this
information through my final product which is a website. During this process I
gained more knowledge about training dogs, as well as learning how to create
a website. My supervisor for personal project was Ms. Ortega, I want to thank
her for guiding me through the process and making sure that I’m keeping up
with all the work. Overall, personal project was quite a time investment but
through it I learned a lot and it helped improve my time management.

Inigo

My name is Iñigo Casanova Ferrer, and for my Personal Project I decided to
focus on the aspects of photography. Knowing how diverse Shanghai can
be my learning goal was to show and compare the rich and the poor using
photography. I furthermore took pictures in random streets in Shanghai to
create a photography album I could present on the Personal Project Fair on the
15 of December. During this process I have learned to value how important a
picture is and how it can mean 1000 words. As well as taking a few skills with me
like time-management skills or research skills I knew were critical throughout
this project. Thanks to my advisor, Mr.Al, I had an easier path towards the
end of the project and I could focus on not only the writing documents of the
project but the product as well.

I certainly enjoyed making my product
and talking about in Criterion A and B
since photography is something I’ve
always enjoyed doing and making a
product out of it was extraordinary. As
well as learning all the skills that will help
me for the future and improve not only
my presentation skills but my capability
of making a digital album. Knowing how
big the year of Grade 10 is and will be kept in my memory, the Personal Project
will do too.

Jasmine

My name is Jasmine, Ellery Flores and I’m interested
in all things creative. I’m half British and half Filipino
and inspired creatively by anything to do with
culture, art, design, fashion and photography. My
goal for my Personal Project was to create a series
of photographs and designs based on Art Deco
buildings and architecture from within my home city
Shanghai. Shanghai always interests me because
of it’s juxtaposition of merging the old and the new.
I wanted to do the same for my project so have
incorporated photographs of old Art Deco pieces
and was interested in exhibiting them within a modern platform that we all use
today. My final product is a series of photographs of Art Deco from around the

city, shared within artj.z18 a social media gallery
within Instagram. From this process, I have learned
that art can be conceptualised in many different
ways and platforms and can be viewed physically or
digitally.

My supervisor was Jae Rang oh who I would like to
thank for always supporting and encouraging me to
do my best.

Jeonghyeon

My name is Jeonghyeon Lee. My goal for the Personal Project was to learn how
to create a video game. My final product is a very basic 2D platformer game
made through the Unity game engine. From this experience, I have learned
what truly goes into the process of creating a game and the basics of creating
one myself. My supervisor was Mr. McGrath and I would like to thank him for
his guidance and support throughout the process. I never truly realised how
much time and effort went into creating even the most basic games until a few
weeks ago. After completing this project, I gained a newfound respect for all
of the creators of the quality games that I have played over the years. Thanks
to all of the work and passion that they put into creating games, I (and many
others) was able to experience something special.

Jeremy

My name is Jeremy, my goal for my personal was to redesign a gaming mouse.
My final project will be fantastic I think. Through this process I learned how to
use a paint spray gun.

My supervisor is Ms.Jae I would like to thank her for giving me some helpful
ideas about my project.

Kaden

My goal for my personal project was to enhance my ability to 3d print. My final
product will be to 3D print the key caps on a keyboard. Through out this journey
I learnt a lot like using fusion 360 (a 3D printing software) how keyboards are
made and how to build one. I want to give a massive thanks to my supervisor
Mr. Matheson and everyone supporting me through this journey. This project
was really fun because I got to make something that I was really passionate
about.

Peter

My name is Peter Sun and I’m a grade 10 student. My goal for my Personal Project
was to learn knowledge and perform skills that relates to optic and handcraft a
optic item, which will is a telescope. While crafting my product, I have learned
about the function of how telescope works, to be specific, the function of
concave lens and convex lens and other optical materials. I’ve learnt how the
combination of different optical materials can ably people to see things far
away, which they couldn’t see normally. Furthermore, I have learnt how the
process is for conducting a telescope and making it. Lastly, I would like to say
a huge thanks to my supervisor, Mr. Xu, since he has guided me through my
personal project, providing me information about it.

Thomas

My name is Thomas Liu. My Personal Project objective is to improve my video
transition and lighting skills during filming and post-production. My final
product is a 3-5 minute promotional video that introduces WISS via various
facets of campus life. Throughout the project, I developed my shot structuring
and planning skills. Meanwhile, I learnt a variety of masking transition and
various videography techniques such as time lap video. I would like to express
my gratitude to Mr.Al, my supervisor, who has been a tremendous help and
support to me during this process.

Luca

My Name is Luca Hoffmann.

My goal for my Personal Project was to improve my drawing skills.

My Final Product is a fantasy related painting. In the process I have learned
how to use acrylic and oil colors to create different shades and lighting effects
to paint it.

I would like to thank my supervisor Ms. Osterloh for keeping me on track with
the tasks.

Marius

My name is Marius. My goal for my personal project was to create a song
comprised of 7 different genres.

My final product is a 4-minute song containing all 7 genres, I have learned how to
mix and master a different range of musical genres as well as the backgrounds
of each genre.

My supervisor was Mr. McDowall, and I would like to thank him for guiding me
through the process and giving me good advice to complete my project as
well as introducing my to the basics of electronic music and lending me his
headphones to reach my full sound quality for the end result.

This process was very enjoyable for me because I have improved as a musician
and producer and learned thing about production that I have not known before
such as techniques to cut out interfering frequencies, using compression
and parallel compression to master and how to make unique and creative
transitions.

Marscha

My name is Marscha Wolf and my goal for Personal Project is to create a
website for European desserts recipe that are makable in less time and easy to
understand so children are also able to make them. My final product is available
in German and English. The desserts are makable in less than 60minutes. I
choose fast recipes because I am also a person who doesn’t like to stand in the
kitchen for too long to make food, especially when I’m hungry. The recipes are
explained with pictures and less text. At the beginning of the recipe, there are
also short historical facts about the dessert.

I have learned that having
good time management is
important so I get things
done on time. Making all
the recipes and doing all my
summative on time was a
real challenge for me.

I want to thank Ms. Osterloh

Nicole

My name is Nicole van Duinen. My goal for my personal project was to challenge
myself to show how imagery could be used to create a setting or character. My
final product is a piece of creative writing which does not follow a plot. Instead,
it describes a setting through the character’s eyes. During the process of
making the product, I have learned how to enhance imagery in writing by using
other devices such as onomatopoeia, personification, similes and metaphors.
My supervisor was Ms. Ness, who helped me get ideas on how to start my
written work and reminded me about the deadlines for the Personal Project. I
am deeply grateful to have had her support me through this project.

Sabrina

My goal for my Personal Project was to make tattoo designs. The reason why
I wanted to make tattoo designs is because I was inspired by tattoos that had
meaning in them. I love it when a person is wearing a tattoo that represents
themselves, where they came from and what they’ve been through and I want
to have some of those elements in my designs.

Though I sometimes think that I should go beyond my limits, I have learned that
it is more fun to make the designs that I want to make and that I shouldn’t have
high expectations for my work.

My supervisor was very helpful throughout the process. They have motivated
me many times when I felt unsure and know I feel a tad bit confident about my
work.

S hawn

My name is Shawn, my goal of my personal project is to create a animation at
least 30 second. And I learned self management skill form the process of my
product. I create the timetable and process journal before I start create the
animation.

This picture is showing the portion of my animation manuscript. I spent over
2 month’s portion of my free time at home to complete this. After I finish the
manuscript, I need to connect them on video editor.

In the conclusion, I need explain about how do self management skill impact
my product. Because it’s hard to keep doing some thing hard every day, and
I’m responsible to finish this product in tiny amount of time, so I need some
management to force myself to do the work.

Ryan

My name is Ryan Kim. My goal for my Personal Project is to help newbies
and beginners who just started to go to a gym, yet struggles due to lack
of knowledge related to fitness. My final product is a website that have
information about workout supplements, and workout routines. In order to
gather every bits of information I needed, I had to do some researches, and I
have learned few things related to supplements such as possible side effects
that can happen from consuming certain supplements. For workout routines,
I have learned a lot more exercises that I have not tried before. I would like to
show my appreciation to my supervisor, Mr. Halcrow for his guidance through
out the project.

Tomi

My name is Tomi Cabrera Martin and I am in grade 10 green. My goal for my
Personal Project was to create an educational website dedicated to teenagers
fitness. My final product is an educational website focusing on teenagers
fitness. I have learned a lot about nutrition, exercise and the requirements for
teenagers’ health and wellbeing. My supervisor throughout the personal project
was Christopher Barry (Mr Barry) who has been my physical education teacher
and a mentor for the past several years. I appreciate his guiding throughout
this process and all the help that I have received from him this year.

V ivien

Hey, my name is Vivien Pichler. My learning goal was to improve my knowledge
about mental illnesses since I thought this topic was pretty interesting and a
lot of artists have mental illnesses. In addition, I like to draw, and I always had
patience for this hobby. Furthermore, I wanted to let other people know how
people with mental illnesses feel, so my final product is a sketch book about
mental illnesses.

I have learned a lot of different things such as drawing with different media
(watercolor, pastels, oil painting) and different
interesting facts about mental illnesses. At
first, I was struggling what I wanted to do
for my personal project, considering I could
have done whatever I wanted but at the end I
decided to do sketches about mental illnesses.
The reason why I thought mental illnesses are
interesting is because I saw a lot of fascinating
art related to this topic. My supervisor, Ms.
Vanek, helped me a lot and improved my art
skills by telling and showing me sketching
ideas related to mental illnesses.

I just wanted to thank everyone who supported me with my personal project,
especially Ms. Vanek.

Wesley

My name is Wesley and my personal project is about Chinese calligraphy.
My goal in this project is to learn and experience the technicality of Chinese
calligraphy. Through my process of learning the different fonts of calligraphy, I
gained knowledge of how each font evolved over the centuries. Moreover, I wish
to demonstrate how to write the different fonts. These fonts are (篆书) Zhuan
shu, (隶书) Lishu, (楷书) kaishu and(行书) Xingshu. There is also (草书) Caoshu
which is beyond my
capability as a beginner.
Therefore, I will not be
able to demonstrate it in
this project. In addition,
Chinese calligraphy is not
only appreciated as an art,
it is also used in Chinese
festivities. On this
journey, I have discovered
that what is considered as
advanced and beautiful
calligraphy today was once regarded as radical and unconventional. Finally,
I will share my learning process and provide my opinions on how each style
contributes to my overall attempt to master calligraphy.
