PART 2: PERSONAL RESPONSES ON THE ISSUE a. Opinions / Reactions / Comparison / Commentary / Causes / Effects
OPINIONS STEVE ABAT IGOM ANAK JAMES NYELANG MS2311170265 ELVINA SATI ANAK JAMES MS2311170716 From my point of view, mental health is something that we cannot take it for granted. Mental health illness bring so much negative sides such as it can reduce quality relationships, decrease self confidence, lowering the enthusiasm to live. Therefore, not taking mental health illness seriously can lead to someone to do sometshing without rational such as attempted to do suicide, take drugs and self-harm. In my opinion,it is concerning that mental health cases are steadily rising. I believe that everyone should be able to live a healthy and positive life . Sometimes,I ponder to myself knowing that every day some people are suffering silently and not seeking help is unfathomable . People should not be afraid to reach out for help and creating a safe space for them by simply listening would be the perfect first step in combating this issue. 4 OPINIONS
In my perspective, mental health is our prioritize. Millions of people are impacted annually by this grave problem. Thus, Mental problems has been stigmatized for years and we need to change that. Hence, mental health should be given as much importance as physical health. As a consenquence, healthy mind is necessary to have a healthy body. Positive mental health allows people to realize their full potential, cope with stress in life, work productively and make meaningful contributions to the community. 5 AYUNNIE SAIDATUL BALQIS BINTI HAMRENNIZAL MS2311170587
REACTION It is undeniably shocking to us that mental health cases among young people are still rampant. If this goes on, the mortality rate due to mental health cases will rise exponentially and we do not think that should happen. We stand with those who are struggling in silent and fighting their own battes that only they know. Trust, you are seen and you are heard 6
Parents play a significant role in the upbringing of their children and are responsible in guding them on how to take care of their mental health. We can see that over the years parenting style has changed tremendously. Parents in this generation are now more aware of the danger that comes with not caring for your child’s mental health. Contrary to 20 years ago, where this was not even a major topic between parents in Malaysia and even around the world. COMPARISON It is vital that we learn how much have changed in recent years ; the way we approach a topic such as mental health to know where we could do better in combating the rise of these cases. We can learn from the way parenting now versus then and school now versus then. 7 Parents nowadays are… actively participating in mental health campaigns constantly monitoring their child’s activities online Parents back then… did not have access to any form of media and education about mental health. lack awareness about mental health and their children are emotionally neglected and are left to fend for themselves
School Schools back then mainly focused on the contents that are in the books and nothing more. Students were expected to only learn and memorize textbooks and master the contents in it. However, nowadays school are all encompassing. Schools nowadays... focus on the overall wellbeing of students. have activities to raise awareness on mental health such as mental health awareness month and talks from councellors . Schools back then… adapted a book-centered learning style had no initiatives in encouraging awareness among students about mental health. 8
Commentary 9 We think that mental health is a serious issue that has to be addressed especially in this time of advanced technology. It has to be addressed because if these cases are not solved and there are no initiatives to solve it then we would lose our most valuable asset .Our young ones. Our young ones are the future of this nation and we believe wholeheartedly that a great future is built on great minds that are stable mentally.
One of the common factors that can be seen is parents that are separated and divorce. Moreover, the divorce process itself take some times for the children to adapt and understand. Additionally, this makes the children experience less attention and love from both parents. Effects someone’s ways of thinking and act. Therefore, not taking this matter seriously can lead to someone to act out of rational. For instance, practicing self harm and attempt to commit suicide just to cope with the pain.Hence,it is compulsory for most people to look after anyone around them that experience this unfortunate situation. A small act of kindness can save lives. physical and mental abuse or sexual abuse are also can be the contributor to the rise of mental issues in Malaysia. To elaborate on that, such gruesome act can leave not only physical traumas yet mental trauma to the children who experience it. Undoubtedly, the trauma has built serious depression and anxiety problem in them. Other than that, mental health issues could effect every relationships with their loved ones.It is because they tend to isolate themselves from outside world rather than opening up about their problems. As a result, this could strain the relationships and add more burden to people. CAUSES EFFECTS 10
PART 2:WAYS TO OVERCOME THE ISSUE RECOMMENDATIONS / SUGGESTIONS/ SOLUTIONS / PREDICTION
SOLUTIONS We should spending time together with our family to create strong bond together with family members. We have to practice healthy routine daily life such as being good in physical health, eating balanced diet and getting regular exercise to reduce our mental problems. We should go taking part in local activities for instance, community and volunteering activities to get supportive relationships and have significantly better mental health outcomes. We must make time to play both in indoors and outdoors to improve our mental health wellbeing. 11
SUGGESTIONS Parents should after their child mental state as simple as asking about their day, their concerns and etcd look.In consequence, this could tighten the bond and lift up some worries they have in mind. Additionally, seeking professional help such as psychiatrist may help you in the long run.Hence, these professional people could provide a better understanding and provide proper treatment to those who had to suffer the mental illness. Alternatively, it is highly suggested to get in touch with registered counselling centre. For instance, Archdiocesan Mental Health Ministry. Therefore, we could do theraphy to understand and learn to cope pressures in future. 12
PREDICTIONS In Malaysia, young children and teenagers experience a high burden and poor mental health. Nonetheless, positivity will always outweigh negativity if we practice our healthy routine in our daily life. The future will be bright only if we choose to make it so. Therefore, do not be afraid to share your problems to the people you trust that care for your mental health. Healthy routine will bring us prosperity through the unity of people of all ages finding common ground. We believe that in 10 years if subjects about mental health are implemented in schools, workspaces, and at home, we will see a more liberated and smart generation. 13
PART 3 : CONCLUSION From what we have learned , mental health cases among young people in Malaysia are increasing due to a myriad of reasons. It is without a doubt that we as a society should lend a hand in combating this issue. It is important that we break the stigma surrounding mental health because mental heath should be talked about openly in order for us to take that very first step in solving this issue. If we do not know what we are dealing with we would not be able to move forward and solve this. We believe that, there could be 99 people in the room that do not want to take action but it only takes one person to stand up for everything to change completely. 14
REFERENCES As social institution, the family unit plays a critical role in cultivating a nurturing environment for children to grow up and thrive in. A fundamental yet crucial component in building this foundation is the recognition that a child’s emotional wellbeing is just as important as his or her physical health. A strong mental health builds resilience to cope with whatever challenges that life throws at them, moulding them into well-rounded, healthy and wholesome adults. There is a wide range of things that we can do to keep children and youth mentally well. They include: 15 --being in good physical health, eating a balanced diet and getting regular exercise. --engaging in time to play, both indoors and outdoors. --being part of a family that has a strong bond. --taking part in local activities.
Traumatic events can trigger mental health problems for children and young people who are already vulnerable. Drastic changes often act as triggers. Such triggers include home relocation, change of school and even the birth of a new sibling. Teenagers often experience emotional turmoil as their minds and bodies develop. A critical part of growing up is identifying and accepting who they are. This transition to adulthood may prove challenging and so, they may experiment with alcohol, drugs or other substances which may, in turn, impact mental health. There are risk factors which can make some children and young people more likely to experience mental health problems than others. These factors include : 16 -- having a long-term physical illness. -- a parent who has had mental health issues, problems with alcohol or has been in trouble with the law. death of someone close to them. -- parents who are separated or divorced. -- experiencing severe bullying or physical or sexual abuse. -- poverty or homelessness. -- experiencing discrimination. -- caring for a relative, taking on adult responsibilities. -- having long-lasting difficulties at school.

Selangor and Melaka both recorded 15 per cent, while Pahang and Perak recorded 13 per cent and 12 per cent respectively. Less than 10 per cent of those screened in Penang, Sarawak, Kedah, Terengganu had mental health problems, while only one per cent of those screened in Kelantan experienced depression and anxiety. 17
