Marie B. ChauvetMonchik Principal of PS 138 My career in the Department of Education started 40 years ago at PS 138 as a Science teacher. PS 138 is my heart and soul; I love the school so much. I have been the proud principal of Public school 138 for the last 22 years. The school always strives to create a learning environment where students are afforded the opportunity to succeed academically, emotionally, and socially. This vision is made possible because of the caliber of the staff, parents, administration, and students, working collaboratively toward a common goal, which is to offer the best educational experience to all students. Mission Statement: I believe that all children can learn if they are taught properly. Over the years, I have created a positive learning environment, where the children felt comfortable to learn, despite the challenges that they may have been experiencing outside of the school. They felt that the school was their second home. Teachers in the school must provide students with the proper tools to use in order to learn; students must be supported academically and socially in order for them to grow intellectually and emotionally, and become self-sufficient and productive citizens. Motto: My motto is “Educate to Elevate.” We must educate all of our students in order to elevate their learning curve because education is the great equalizer in society. Educational Background: I am the product of the New York City Public school system. I graduated from high school when I was 16 years old. College was the best educational experience that shaped my life into who I am today. I enjoyed every aspect of my college days, including spending sleepless nights to prepare myself for exams, quizzes, or research papers. I did not want to leave college because I feared the unknown and there was so much to learn. I graduated from York College with a Bachelor’s degree in Science Education. I earned my first Master’s degree in Science Education from Long Island University in 1984. I enrolled in a second Master’s program at Long Island University, this time, Page 3

majoring in Educational Leadership and administration. I completed my second Master’s degree in 1990. I was part of a focus group on Educational Reform at Princeton University in 1993. In 1998, I was a member of a study group, the “Twenty First Century Educational Reform” at the University of Pittsburgh. From 1998 to 2000, I attended Columbia University where I completed my post-graduate studies in Educational Leadership. I was appointed Principal of PS 138 in 2001 under the leadership of Dr. Evelyn Castro, then Superintendent of Community School District 17. In the fall of 2001, I became a Yale Fellow focusing on Child Study and Early Childhood Cognitive Development by Dr. James Comer and Dr. Joiner. In the summer of 2002, I attended New York City Principals Academy to fine-tune my administrative skills. In 2006, I was a presenter at the Core Knowledge Convention, in Boston, Massachusetts. Work Experience I started to volunteer at August Martin High school during my college years from 1979 to 1981. I enjoyed working with High school students because it enabled me to teach students the prerequisite skills they needed to succeed in college. Since I was passionate about science, I wanted to create as many scientists as possible. I taught my students about the different areas of science because I wanted them to be prepared for college. 1980-1983 BRAGS Brooklyn Haitian American Good Shepherds High School Science and Math teacher: I taught Regents Biology to students in grades 9, 10, and 11. 1983-1985 Public School 138, grades K-6 Science teacher 1985-1991 Public School 138, second grade teacher. I taught the foundational skills a student needs in order to succeed in second grade. I also taught them French. 1991-1993 Public school 138, Reading Recovery teacher, grades 3-6 1993-1995 Public School 6, Bilingual first grade teacher. I also worked at the Office of Teacher Development as a Staff Developer for newly hired teachers. 1995-1996 Public School 6, Science teacher, grades PreK-5 1996-2001 Public School 138, Assistant Principal, grades PreK-5 2001-2023 Public School 138, Principal, grades 3K to 8. Program Highlights at PS 138 PS 138 is a Three-K through Eighth grade school. Its student population age ranges from two to fourteen years old. The curriculum is uniquely designed to address the needs of the diverse students that make up the school population, due to age differences, cultural background, instructional needs, and learning styles. The school focuses on language development and conceptual understanding of Literacy, Math, Science, and Social Studies, French, Arts, Physical Education, Technology, and Social Emotional Learning. An accelerated program embedded in the curriculum exposes students to higher-level Page 4

learning. The program is taught directly by the teachers and reinforced through project-based learning in all grades. Seventy eight percent of our graduating class enroll in regents classes at the school. They study Living Environment, Earth Science, and Algebra 1. Most eighth graders have an opportunity to earn between 2 and 6 credits by the time they graduate. High Schools accept the eighth graders regents’ exams scores when they start the ninth grade because the students get a score of 75 or higher on their regents exams. At PS 138, students are engaged in the visual and performing Arts program. As part of their music education, students in grades Kindergarten to three take violin class. Every year, we go one grade higher. They have a recital once a year to highlight their musical and artistic talents. This year, in addition to our in-house recital, our young violinists performed at the Fiddle Fest Recital held at Prospect Height High School in the spring. As for the visual arts, the Art teacher engages students in studying art elements, art history, as well as creating portraits, paintings, drawings, murals, and other art work you may see in display throughout the school building. Students really put their talents to work. Foreign language: Students at all grade levels learn how to speak, read, and write French, a program that starts from 3K. Meet the Debate Team: One of the Middle School teachers leads the debate team. He integrates debates in his English Language Arts lessons to motivate students to analyze situations, use their critical thinking skills to make decisions and draw conclusions. As a culminating activity, the teams presents a mock trial once a year. Other teachers and students have the opportunity to see the team in action. At PS 138, we create opportunities for students to develop leadership skills and give them a voice in decision-making. Students are involved in running for student government seats. A teacher works collaboratively with the students to organize elections. Students elect the most qualified peers to represent them and share their views. Career Day: The annual Career Day has always been successful. Students focus on what they would like to be when they grow up and what they must do to achieve their goals. They must dream, believe, set goals and achieve. They also dress for success on Career Day. They meet and speak with different professionals about the career of interest to them. Multicultural Day: At Ps 138, we value all cultures and embrace the differences students and their families bring to the school. Students enjoy sharing their culture, music, traditions, and food with their peers on Multicultural Day. The multicultural parade is the highlight of the day. The students walk and dance to cultural music, their country flags held high as they march around the neighborhood. The PTA and the SLT are essential to the school operation. The SLT and PTA members work very close with parents, administration, teachers and staff, and the community at large, to make important decisions about teaching, learning, and student achievements. The community-based organization “Research Foundation of Medgar Evers (Beacon)” provides after school care for students from Kindergarten to eighth grade. Page 5

Our goal at PS 138 is to prepare all students to be college and career ready as they strive to be successful academically, socially, and emotionally so that they may become productive members of society. It takes all of us to achieve this goal. Recognition: 2001- PS 138 was featured in the New York Times, in 2001 for its substantial gains on the NYS English Language Arts test scores. 2002- Twenty-two fifth graders were selected to go to the Yale Child Study Forum for a week along with their parents. 2003- I was the co-author of a book published by Yale University in reference to Student Learning. 2005- The school was part of ABC and NBC news and the New York Post for making a 20-point gain on the New York State English Language Arts test scores. 2005- The school celebrated its Centennial Year. The 100th Anniversary Celebration was highlighted in News 14, The Amsterdam News, and broadcasted on the Haitian Radio Program. 2006- I attended the Core Knowledge Convention in Boston as one of the presenters. 2008- Three students won first place in the District 17 Spelling Bee, for third, fourth and fifth graders. 2014- The school was highlighted in the Amsterdam News when our Basket Ball Team won first place in Brooklyn. The school was third place, citywide. 2014- The school was highlighted on News One for making it to the finalist on the Citywide Step Competition. We won second place. 2016- The school was highlighted by Chanel Thirteen News Hour for the Restorative Approach that we used to curtail student suspension. Personal Narrative: I have been married to Jerry Francis Monchik for thirty-five years. He has always been by my side since the day that we met, 37 years ago. Thank you for supporting me in achieving my goals. You taught me the importance of having a family and raising our children together. I have five wonderful children Robert Ramsess, Philippe Benjamin, Sade Victoria, Joseph Francis, and Daniel William. They inspire me to be a better person. They bless my life with five grandchildren: Caroline, Yuhan, Dillon, Emma, and Jerry-Glenn. They are most precious to me. They give me great pleasure to watch them grow and mature. Page 6

My mom, Marie Rose Chauvet, is instrumental of my success. She brought me to the United States when I was a young child and supported me throughout my life. She is a beacon of hope that kept me grounded and focused, regardless of the situation. My Dad, Fernand Chauvet (deceased), sacrificed so much for his family. I have always admired his courage and determination. His motto was, “Never Give Up.” He is no longer with us; he was so proud of me. He would have been elated to be part of this celebration. My Brother Rodney whom I had the pleasure of watching grow into the man he has become. Thank you for being my life support, for being there for me in good and bad times. My nieces and nephews are very important components in my life. I would like to acknowledge my aunts Tante Marguerite, Tante Yolande, and my Godmother, Tante Odette. My mom’s sisters were like another mom to me. They were always there, cheering me and supporting me. The four sisters were very close so they brought up their children as if they were all my brothers and sisters. The tight bond that we share to this day, keeps the family closely knitted, regardless of the physical distance. My twenty cousins are like my brothers and sisters. We always want to be together because we are the descendants of Marie Victoria and her husband Clement Andre. Lastly, I would like to thank my grandmother, Marie Victoria, who thought me the meaning of unconditional love and to love God above all things. I loved her so much. She passed away when I was 16 years old, but the lessons that she taught me remain engraved in my heart to this day. Page 7

Congratulations and best wishes to you, Mne. Chauvet-Monchik! Indeed, this is a moment to be celebrated after having given the best of your years to educating and elevating the PS 138 student community. The impression you have been able to make on young minds, over the many years, is more than you will ever imagine. It is your dedication and commitment to students and student learning that have made you the remarkable leader that you are and that have brought you thus far. You have been an exemplary leader in all your efforts and endeavors to make PS 138” one of the best schools.” Foremost, yours has always been to invest continually in means and ways to improve student learning and outcomes. Most of all, you held yourself and your instructional team highly accountable, making them consumers of the most current research best practices to guide instructional practices and heighten student outcomes/success. Most certainly, in many ways, you demonstrated for your constituents the value in perseverance of effort and how that ultimately becomes the proven predictor of academic success. As a visionary leader and change agent, par excellence, you did not only have dreams for PS 138, but you assiduously sought to extend those dreams into the realms of reality. High standards and expectations you set for PS 138. Your successor will, most assuredly, have to walk in your footsteps to do the job equally effective. Resilience, commitment, determination, and vision continued to be the main ingredients of your success recipe during your reign as leader, mother, and “Queen.” But amidst it all, it embodied an ennobling “stick-to-it-ness” that propelled your team to love life and learning at all costs and to give all students of their best, by showing those inside and outside of the arena that academic success is and can be ours, no matter who we are, what we look like, or where we are from. This is cemented in the solid and firm foundation which you have laid during your years of governance. You did it well! Enjoy now the fruits of your labor and the fruit of the Holy Spirit. As you embark onto other horizons and change course, may your journey be guided by divine light and inspiration. Continue to share your many blessings in whatever direction your passion may lead. Best of luck, Dr. Joseph Sealy Page 16

Dear Mrs. Chauvet Monchik, First and foremost, allow me to congratulate you on your well-deserved retirement! As you pursue new challenges and adventures, I am hopeful that they will be rewarding and enriching as well. Your exodus from PS 138 will be a bittersweet moment for the school and community at large. I remember so visibly when you and I were both new teachers sharing moments of challenges, educational aspirations, and laughter. Hence, over a span of forty years, I have watched as you embark on new challenges, making strides in your career path as an educator. You have evolved from being a Science teacher, Second Grade Teacher, Reading Teacher, First Grade Teacher, Staff Developer, and Assistant Principal. These positions have greatly contributed to helping you achieve the goal that you set for yourself many years ago: becoming one day a school principal. You have indeed achieved that goal with tireless efforts, while promoting academic excellence throughout the course of your career. Your love of learning and most importantly your love of children is admirable. As a school leader, you make providing a high-quality education for all students a top priority. You demand the best educational learning environment for the students and consequently, you provide effective professional development opportunities, intra-class visits, and most importantly, opportunities for the teachers to meet and reflect on their practices. Once again, congratulations! Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your professional journey and work experience at PS 138 as your colleague, and assistant principal. I will always cherish those moments and truly wish the best of everything for a dear friend. “Success, which is something so simple in the end, is made up of thousands of things, we never Fully know what” Rainer Maria Rilke Gratefully, Wilhelmina Tanner-Early, Ed. Homage to Mrs. Chauvet-Monchik There is no way twenty-six years of memories can possibly fit on a journal page. When I look in retrospect at my professional journey here at PS 138, I consider myself really fortunate and blessed to have known you as a leader, a role model, a friend, a supervisor with a super vision to educate. To this day, I remember my first day at PS 138 as a new NYC public school teacher. Your first words still resound in my ears as if they were spoken only yesterday. As I walked past the hallway leading to the auditorium, you were doing registration. You said to me, “I am the Assistant Principal. Everything is going to be alright.” And you faithfully kept your promise to the end. These words have had a lasting impression on my career as a teacher and a supervisor. For forty years, you have worn multiple hats and have been successful in the various roles you portrayed. You have been an educator, a critical thinker, a problem solver, a decision maker, a mother, a counselor, a comforter, a mind shaper, and a dedicated servant to the staff, the students and their families, and the community at large. I always admire you for your ability to orchestrate the overwhelming mandates and coordination that leading a school building requires. Now that you have made the difficult decision to transition to the next chapter of your life, and that you are ready to explore new horizons, I wish you all the best. May your retirement years bring you the joy of a new beginning and grant you the grace to enjoy all the best things life has to offer. Your unwavering and selfless contributions to PS 138 will be remembered and cherished beyond your existence on this earth. I will be forever grateful to you for molding me into the leader I am today. I am equally thankful to you for the trust you placed in me over the years. Your presence at PS 138 will be sorely missed. It is going to be very challenging to fill the void you left behind. I pledge to keep your legacy alive for the remainder of my years at PS 138. Ms. Chauvet, enjoy your hard-earned retirement to the fullest! Treat yourself to all the exciting adventures of life! Dear Mrs. Chauvet‐Monchik, I have heard some of the best Principals come from the best Teachers. Fortunately, I have had the privilege of working with one of the best. Your love for the PS138 community inspires you to find ways to elevate education and create opportunities beyond the status quo for your students and staff alike. Your passion for teaching and your desire for academic excellence moves you to instill those qualities in others. Your personal sacrifice to improve students’ lives is noteworthy. Your appreciation for learning has motivated your decisions across the board. You can be found early in the morning teaching a 2nd grader phonics or helping a struggling 3rd grader learn the principles of multiplication. I have seen you late in the evening assisting a parent navigate through the nuances of their child’s academic responsibility and social engagement. Your approachable manner encourages even the youngest of our community to stop by your office to just say “hello”. Your love for PS138 is contagious. You will be missed. You are an educator through and through, a mentor, my Principal and friend! All the best to you on your retirement! Page 31
