XI. Read the passage, and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D for each question.

Past explorers have made vast contributions to our knowledge of the world today. They braved the

oceans to discover the world and to bring their goods to other countries to trade.

Many explorers had to overcome their fear of the unknown to travel around the world on their

sailing ships. Submitting themselves to unpredictable weather conditions, each explorer either traveled

further than his predecessor or tried to find a different route to already discovered countries. For

example, Vasco Da Gama, a Portuguese explorer, established a sea route from Europe to India. He had

extended the sea route that Bartolomeu Dias had already done when he later sailed around the Cape of

Good Hope in southern Africa.

More importantly, explorers first closed the gap between the east and the west by trading their local

goods with foreign ones. India was known for its spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon while China

was known for its silk. A part of the east was brought to the west when western gourmets developed a

taste for eastern spices in their food.

People in the east dressed in clothes that were previously only worn in the west. Without the explorers,

many of us would still be living in our own enclave with little knowledge of the vast world and what

They watch carefully, and talk to people – sometimes to criminals. Then they give information to the

police.

It is often considered that the schoolyard is where bullies go to make other kids a miserable school
life, but a new study suggests that classrooms are another popular place.

The study, presented recently at the American Public Health Association’s yearly meeting in
Philadelphia, is based on the results of the research from more than 10,000 middle school students
who answered questions online.

Of those researched, 43% said they’d been physically bullied within the last month. A bit more than
half said they had been laughed at in an unfriendly way, and half reported being called hurtful names.
About one third said groups had excluded them to hurt their feelings. 28% said their belongings had
been taken or broken; 21% said someone had threatened to hurt them. According to the results, two-
thirds of the students said they had been bullied in more than one way over the previous month.

The study authors mentioned that 8% of the students who answered said they had missed school at
least once during the school year because of fear of being bullied, 25% said they had taken other
actions, such as missing recess, not going to the bathroom or lunch, missing classes, or staying away

VIETNAM’S PAST EDUCATION SYSTEM

In comparison with other developing countries, Vietnam's population enjoys a relatively high
standard of education. In the past, Vietnam's educational system was affected by many cultures, of
which the Chinese and French had most significant influence.

The Imperial Academy- the first university in Vietnam- was built in 1076 under Emperor Ly Nhan
Tong for the education of sons of royalty and high-ranking officials. In 1252, the college was opened
to students from various backgrounds besides royal or official ones.
Before the French came, the old-type Mandarin system administered Vietnam for approximately 2,000
years. As the French took over the government's administration, it was converted from a Confucian
system into a Western-oriented one.

In order to participate in the civil service under the French rule, the Vietnamese had to convert to
the French system and were required to know the French language. In addition, they had to have good
facility with the new version of their language instead of the traditional Chinese characters which had
been in use for hundreds of years.

At the beginning of 1900, the whole system was revised. An educational system of three levels
was established; elementary, primary, and secondary education. In addition, the use of the national
language (Quoc Ngu) was added to the curriculum. Emphasis was placed on rote learning, class
discipline and other French educational methods. Several new schools and colleges were established.
Accordingly, French became the second language of much importance to the students.
