Adrienne O’Neill’s Fourth Grade Class Tackles Pollution Problem!

Students were learning about pollution and ways that humans have affects on pollution. Ms. Adrienne
O’Neill brought in buckets with water and oil and various items such as cotton balls, soda cans, milk jugs, paper
towels, q-tips, etc. and she had students "undo" the pollution. Students were able to work together to pick up
the items but they were unable to really undo the pollution due to the water and oil mix.

Adrienne O’Neill’s Fourth Grade Class Takes a Challenge!

Students in Ms. O’Neill’s class also learned that pollution affects the environment even after it's
picked up. Did you know that it takes 50-80 years for a plastic container to decompose? Humans
can do something about this! After their unit on pollution, Ms. Adrienne challenged her class!
During Spring Break her students could earn extra credit by picking up pollution and documenting
it with pictures. These are pictures of students using their spring break to help the environment.
Way to go! Wingo students make a difference everyday!

GCHS students spent a day with students at Wingo Elementary teaching them how to code or the
basics of coding. These third grade students were fascinated by the concept! Principal Scott Bradley
has a passion for technology! He thoroughly enjoys it and see the possibilities for computer science
careers in the future for many of our students. He thought it would be great to have an “Hour of
Code.” He and Jim Whitaker, GCHS teacher, planned this special event. GCMS student, Matt Whitaker
introduced students to Code.com, a coding website. “I like the problem solving scenarios and we
write out a code for what they are asking for,” Matt stated when discussing the program.

Wingo Fourth Grade Students Present Speeches

Recently, Josie Redden, Isabella Moore, and Madison Franklin presented their speeches at Central
Elementary. They competed against other Graves County students their age. All three of these girls have
been working very hard to prepare for this competition! “While they did not move on to the area
speech competition, I am very proud and blessed to be their teacher!” exclaimed Ms. Adrienne O’Neill.

Dental Smiles Program

Wingo School works with Big Smiles Dental Program to
help our students have healthy smiles. According to the Big
Smiles Dental group, “We know that parents often find tak-
ing their children to the dentist to be a challenge due a vari-
ety of issues including transportation and having to take
time off from work. That’s why so many parents tell us how
much they appreciate the ease and convenience of the in-
school dentist, knowing that their children’s teeth are being
kept healthy. Plus, kids are more comfortable seeing the
dentist in the comfort and familiar surroundings of their
school.”

other special father figure in their life. A night they will long remember!

Wingo Teachers Attend Learning Session

Wingo teachers spend an afternoon learning a new computer program
called Lexia Core 5 Reading. Wingo has implemented this new program and
students enjoy learning with it. “It challenges you and you have to be su-
per careful because every click counts!” says Ryleigh Belknap, 3rd grade
students. “I love it!” exclaims Rex Ferguson, 3rd grade students.

STLP-Robotics

STLP is working with 4-H to learn how to build, program and compete in lego robotics. “The robots are
still a work in progress,” states STLP Coach Tracy Pollock.

Using the UNREAL and RACER Reading Strategies

Wingo’s Third Grade enjoyed Amanda Henson, visiting and sharing how she would use the UNREAL strategy to answer mul-
tiple choice questions after reading a passage. She told students, “There are three type of questions: “Right There”, “Think
and Search,” and “In Your Head.” She explained that sometimes the answers can easily be found right there and are obvious.
At other times a student must think and search out the answer in the passage. Furthermore, at times a student must make
inferences, think in their head by “reading between the lines,” and use what they have learned from the passage to answer
questions.
Principal Scott Bradley also shared
how he would answer the open re-
sponse questions using the RACER
strategy. In the picture on the right,
he is motivating the students before
starting the lesson. Both strategies
help students analyze questions and
use the passage or article to help
them as they answer both types of
questions.

Wingo 6th Grade Completes Etiquette

Wingo Elementary 6th graders recently completed a six-week Etiquette course lead by Tracey Tashjian,
Graves County Extension 4-H Agent. According to sixth grade teacher Sarah Brinkley, "Students gained
valuable life skills that they can apply in real world situations." At the conclusion of the course, students
had the opportunity to showcase their new skills at Patti's 1880's Settlement Restaurant. In addition to
the visit to Patti's, students also visited the Planetarium at Land Between the Lakes where they observed
the weather patterns on various planets within our solar system.

Derby Day Fun! Dash to the Finish Line!

As Wingo School gets ready to wrap up this school year, these two sweet ladies,
Linda Gray and Debbie Samples, decided we needed to have a “dash to the finish
line” by celebrating Kentucky Derby Day right here at Wingo School! Each class
chose their fastest runner, found the fastest “horse,” and the race was on! Of
course, the teachers had to get in on the fun too! The day wouldn’t be complete
without the famous Kentucky Derby hats. Students were allowed to bring a special
hat from home, or it could be one they created themselves! Some classes even
had a time set aside for some creativity in hat making. As you will see in the next
few pages, it was a great way to celebrate a long-time Kentucky tradition and a
great way to cap off this school year! Thank you, ladies! It was an enjoyable event!
