Wingo Students Compete in the Sixth Grade Showcase

We are very proud of our sixth
grade students who attended the
Sixth Grade Showcase. Wingo’s sixth
grade Academic Coach, Lori Atterberry
was very pleased with her team. They
placed 2nd in Quick Recall! That is
quite an accomplishment!

Also, Tristen Cox placed 4th in the
Science category. Way to go!

Be Brave

Indian Pride

Wingo School certainly appreciates the Wingo
PTO, Parent Teacher Organization, because they are
so good to our students and staff! Each year they
provide a new Wingo t-shirt for every student and
staff member. It makes it so nice when going on a
field trip or when visiting other schools because all
students can easily be identified as our Wingo tribe!
As Mrs. Susie Toon said, “Wingo Pride is still alive!”
It is so true! We are so proud of the beautiful shirts
that have been provided for us. Thanks so much!

Wingo Elementary Celebrates Christmas Around the World

Wingo Elementary recently celebrated “Christmas Around the World.” Students had an
opportunity to learn how Christmas is celebrated in the following countries: Bahamas,
Mexico, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Portugal, and the United States. Gifted and Talented
sixth graders were chosen to represent each country and share about that country’s tradi-
tions. While visiting each booth, students played games and made crafts. Thanks to fourth
grade teacher, Ms. Adrienne O’Neill for organizing this fun, educational event!

Student Leaders
Being BrAVE!

Archery Team

Wingo School is very proud of its Archery Team. The Archery Team is made up of 4th and 5th
grade students. Coach Blake Jessup is proud of his team and hopes they do well in the upcoming
competitions. Jana Gibson and Sheila Hussey are our wonderful parent volunteers who help each
week during practice, as well as competition.

Dream Big,
Aim High,
Be Brave!

Archery players practice accuracy
by placing balloons on the targets.
According to Coach Jessup, this
adds a bit of challenge and accom-
plishment when the balloon pops!

ART is in the HEART of Wingo School

Students in art class at Wingo Elementary were learning
about the elements of positive and negative space. Dur-
ing a an art class critique, third grader Jayden Griffin dis-
plays the characters he created using both positive and
negative space. We love all the artistic knowledge that
Mrs. Sherry Darnall shares with our students!

First grade students proudly display exam-
ples of their creativity. After learning about
West African Ceremonial masks, students
created their own version of a symmetrical
mask, or person!

Mrs. Mary Mays faithfully volunteers in the
Kindergarten and first grade art classes at
Wingo Elementary school. Pictured with Mrs.
Reba Wiggins Kindergarten class.

Third grade students in Sherry Darnall’s Art/
Drama class are shown re-creating a “New and
Improved Rumplestiltskin” script. After re-
writing the script, students will perform the
skit for their classmates.

Christmas lies in their hearts.

Warm Welcoming Wingo Smiles

Fourth Grade Wingo Students Win Ribbons

Fourth Grade students have been
learning the art of making speech-
es. They wrote their speeches and
then presented them to their
peers. They worked with the 4-H
Extension Agent, Tracy Tashjian,
throughout the process. Ms. Tracy
works with students countywide
in developing skills that will help
them become confident speakers
and improve their communication
skills.

Wingo PBIS, Positive Behavior Interventions and Support

Third grade students in Nakia
Brown’s class proudly show the
30 feathers they earned for posi-
tive behavior. The class works
together as a team to earn feath-

Wingo Club-Featuring the Green Team

Students love Club Day! One day each month students get to participate in a club of their choice. These stu-
dents chose to join Nakia Brown’s Green Team. They learn about how to make a difference in their community by
recycling, reducing waste, and reusing products for new purposes. Students helped improve the schoolyard includ-
ing the playground and ballfield by picking up trash and recycling plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Great Job!

What If? If You Could Learn Something New, What Would It Be?

“What if you could learn something of your choice, what would it be?”
Principal Scott Bradley and Vice-Principal, Lora Miller asked this question to
5th and 6th grade students at Wingo Elementary. Students were allowed to
brainstorm different skills and occupations that they might be interested in
learning more about. After creating a list, students chose the top 5 that
they would like to learn more about. Then, Mr. Bradley and Mrs. Miller
began pulling in experts in each field. Students spent 3 days in 1 hour clas-
ses each day. There were several interesting classes from which they could
choose. Michael Boyd and Denny Foy led a computer class. WKRECC Line-
man, Matt Elder and Safety Coordinator, Adam Shelton taught a class on
electrical safety. Dana Matheny, Amber Alderdice, and Debbie Samples
were the leaders in a sewing class. Wingo teacher, Monica Wiggins led a
science class as they dissected frogs. Coach Lyndon Dunning and varsity ball
players, from GCHS, taught basketball skills. Lisa Speed from the Home-
makers Club led a group in baking and cooking. Local businessman, Micah
Seavers taught a class on trapping. Kaitlyn Clapp taught a class on cos-
metology. Principal Mike Miller, from the Mayfield –Graves County Voca-
tional School taught a carpentry class. Check out the wooden toolboxes in
the picture below! Wingo teacher assistants, Linda Gray and Julie Hicks
joined in on the fun! Wingo teacher, Amy Elliott, taught a painting class.
Chris Hill helped provide transportation for students. Wingo School would
like to give a special thanks to Wingo PTO for providing the materials used
in many of the classes. It was quite an event! Lora Miller said, “We want to
get students excited about learning and make the connection to real life.
This was an effort of many stakeholders and it takes everyone working
together to make things great for kids.” Mrs. Miller credit to College &
Career Readiness Director, Emily Redden, for helping with the organization
of the event, talking to students, with class assignments, and recruitment
of instructors. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen!

Wingo Elementary School Presents Santa’s Coming!

Issabella Hussey Wingo Elementary students did a great job
and Chevy Adams of presenting the musical “Santa’s Coming,”
did an excellent job an entertaining Christmas concert! The mu-
of hosting the sic was accompanied by movement, instru-
Christmas perfor- ments, and dance. The song “Everlasting
mance. They were Fruitcake” also had quite a bit of humor as
very witty with their students acted out the story from the lyrics.
Christmas quips! It was a joyful event! We are thankful for
Jennifer Woodward, Wingo’s music teacher,
and her musical knowledge and talents.
Thanks to all who came to see the presenta-
tion! We had 465 guests sign in!

Wingo Parent and School Nurse, Kara McMullen shared these thoughts, “I was moved to tears, literally. Those kiddos did
an amazing job today! I love watching the students and seeing their individual, beautiful personalities shining through with
their performances. Some of them were really enjoying themselves. Ms. Jenn’s gift and love of music was amplified through
them and it blessed us all. We could see the work and passion she put into today's program. It was a fabulous way to start
Christmas Break!”

Happy Retirement to Mrs. Julianna Hicks!

Mrs. Julianna Hicks will certainly be missed! She has been a
dedicated employee for over 21 years. While working in a class
that was learning how to write abecedarian poems, Ms. Julie de-
cided that she would write one too! She went home and com-
posed her poem and brought it to school the next day. Even
though this was written several years ago, it still holds true today.
Julianna Hicks loved Wingo School and her students. She will be
truly missed! Wishing her a wonderful and fulfilling retirement!

My Job at Wingo School Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our students!
Assistant to children and teachers...
Best job to me...
Caring and loving...
Don't you see?
Every child everyday...
Fine motto wouldn't you say?
Having fun and learning too...
I really like what I do...
Just a smile or hug at start...
Keeping them all close to my heart...
Lucky am I to be so blest...
Making sure they all do their best...
Never have I written a Poem like this...
Oh it's really simple when you get the hang of it...
Perhaps they'll be doctors or teachers someday...
Quite glad to think I've helped prepare the way...
Red, blue, and yellow, colors I've taught many...
Soon I will ask, "Can you tell me how many?"
Today they're just children ready to grow up...
Under our noses they'll all be adults...
Valedictorian can you spell it for me?
Xenon is a chemistry word...
You'll learn soon enough...
Zippity, Zappity, I'm done with this stuff...
