2015 Southern Region Youth Retreat
Oneekah Hall In June 2015, members of the Archonette, Amicette and Pearlette groups
President traveled to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to attend the 2015 Southern Regional Youth
Retreat. The ZYA competed in various competitions ranging from performance
Zavia McKinnies pieces such as Dramatization, African American poetry reading and a step show;
Vice President to educational and intellectual challenges such as Oratorical, spelling bees and
scholastic trivia. ZYA members placed in the following categories:

Leadership Development
Mayoral Visit
Members of the ZYA had the privilege of visiting City Hall to meet with San Antonio’s First African American Mayor, Ms.
Ivy Taylor. The young ladies were able to sit down for an hour with Mayor Taylor to discuss her roles as Mayor, her
experiences, to share their own experiences and ask her questions. Members were encouraged to continue to become
leaders and active citizens in their communities. Thanks to Mayor Taylor and her office for taking time out to meet with our
young ladies.

Educational Enrichment
College Tour: Texas State University
On October 10th, the APZ Archonette attended a college tour of Texas State University. The University held its “Bobcat
Day” allowing prospective students the ability to tour their campus and attend informational sessions about programs
offered at the college. A tour was conducted by the Omicron Xi undergraduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
Archonettes were able to tour dorms, academic building and departments, classrooms and ask questions about the college
experience.

Texas Conference for Women
Archonette Juniors and Seniors traveled to Austin to attend the Texas Conference for Women. The program was awarded
five scholarships to attend the Young Women component of the conference. The ladies were able to interact leaders in
business, community activists, entrepreneurs and various other individuals making positive impact on the world. The young
ladies also attend a heartfelt session where they were encouraged to embrace their unique selves and find their voice.

Fire Station Tour
The Pearlettes had the privilege of touring Fire Station 38 on Saturday, November 21st. The Pearlettes were able to gain
perspective on life as a firefighter by touring living facilities, exploring the interior of fire trucks and engines, handling fire
hoses and taking a ride on the truck’s ladder. Special thanks to Fire Station 38 for taking time out of their day to educate
our Pearlettes.

Community Service
March of Dimes
In preparation for Prematurity Awareness Month in November, the Pearlettes decorated baby bottles and started
collecting coins on behalf of the March of Dimes. The Pearlettes are doing their part to show you are never too young or
too small to impact the world and by their efforts the Pearlettes were able to raise $80 through their Baby Bottle
Initiative.

Adopt-a-Family
This year in the spirit of the giving back and helping others, the ZYA decided to Adopt-a-Family for the holidays. To kick-
off this initiative the Pearlettes created personalized greeting cards to be included in the holiday packages for the
Adopted Family.

Ronald McDonald House
On September 26th, the Amicettes rolled up their sleeves and took to the kitchen of the Ronald McDonald House to bake
brownies and cookies for the home’s residents and clients. The Amicettes worked diligently baking goodies hoping to do
their part to add a bit of joy and ease some of the burden of families facing medical difficulties.

ZYA Induction Ceremony
On Sunday, September 27th, we welcomed 17 new members to the Pearlettes, Amicettes and Archonettes groups. These
new additions stood before family, friends and APZ members and committed to the goals and ideals of scholarship,
sisterly love and community service. We are honored to have these new members join the APZ ZYA and look forward to a
very prosperous year.

Team Building
On Saturday, October 31st, Amicettes and Archonettes took part in a teambuilding scavenger hunt where participants
worked together to uncover clues and answer riddles in order to find the scavenger hunt items. The activity allowed the
young ladies to learn the importance of teamwork and problem solving. Additionally, to recognize the scavenger hunt
taking place on Halloween day, the Amicettes come out in their costumes to add an extra touch of fun to the event.

Holiday Give Back
Zeta House
In an effort to show its appreciation to Alpha Pi Zeta Chapter for its sponsorship and unwavering support of the ZYA’s
initiatives, programs and activities; the ZYA decorated the Zeta House for the Christmas Holiday. Pearlettes, Amicettes
and Archonettes all worked diligently to create an atmosphere of Holiday cheer which reflects the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority
essence of class and Finer Womanhood.

Adopt-a-Family
The ZYA recognizing the true meaning of the Holidays and the importance of giving, adopted a low-income family for the
Christmas Season. Working with the Family Service Association of San Antonio, the ZYA provided a family of five with
toys, clothes and other necessities to stock under their Christmas tree. Gifts were collected and wrapped on Saturday,
December 12th and members of the Archonettes dropped off collected items to the Family Service Association’s
Neighborhood Place on Sunday, December 13th.

Holiday Party
ZYA Black Hollywood
This year’s ZYA’s Holiday Party was held at the Bluebonnet Hall at the Schertz Civic Center. The occasion provided an
opportunity for ZYA members to learn about Black Hollywood icons and examine African American achievement in movies
and the Academy Awards. The theme of the Holiday party was “ZYA’s Black Hollywood” and the young ladies came as
Hollywood starlets past, present and future.
