Academic Success Coach

Throughout high school, Karson split his time
between sports and tinkering with computers. At
the age of 14, he taught himself C++ and began to
code for a Tolkien based online game called, “The
Turning Point Tavern”, where he would continue
to write code until the domain was shut down in
the early 2000’s. If Karson was not inside on a
computer, he was outside playing basketball; his
favorite sport. Karson continues to play
basketball and online games to this day.

While studying to become a surgical technologist, Karson read Brian
Greene’s physics masterpiece ,An Elegant Universe,a book which ignited
Karson’s interest in the physical sciences. He would continue to study
physics and mathematics as a hobby while earning a degree in Surgical
Technology. After graduating from Aiken Technical College with a degree in
Surgical Technology, Karson worked briefly before returning to college to
study Applied Mathematics at USC Columbia and USC Aiken. In December
2016, he graduated from USC Aiken with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial

Mathematics. Currently, Mr. Welty works part-time as an Academic Success
Coach for GMC and part-time as a SPIN (Small Plot Intensive Farming)
Farmer for Green Fox Gardens, which he owns. The farm experiments with
non-traditional farming methods that can be utilized on plots of land less
than an acre in size. Mr. Welty continues to study mathematics and plans
on returning to college to pursue a M.S. degree in Applied Mathematics.

junior colleges still in operation today. The primary goal is to
welcome and support students who have served in the United
States Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard.

The Veteran’s Club gladly welcomes your membership!

GMC-Augusta Gives Back to the Community in a Big Way with
The Shepheard Community Blood Center Blood Drive

On Thursday, 30 August 2018, GMC students, faculty, and staff
participated in the first of two blood drives planned for the fall. The
Center’s mission is “to collect, process, and distribute blood and blood
products.” In operation since 1978, the SCBC has expanded its reach
and facilities, especially in recent years, to ensure that blood is in
steady supply, as “[they] are the contracted provider for twenty-three
hospitals in thirty counties across the two-state area.”

A staff of five worked seemingly non-stop from 9:00 am until
2:00 pm to ensure that those eager to donate were given the
opportunity. Knowing that their donation will be used to treat
people with serious illnesses, life-threatening injuries, and aid
people in various medical emergencies, makes the decision to
donate blood easier. This was true for business major,
Charity, who explained that a classroom visit from Mr. Tut
Baker, Recruitment Specialist for SCBC, encouraged her to
donate. According to Charity, “It was a personal preference,
the reason why, because I learned the other day…it was used
for premature babies, and I had two babies that were born
premature.”

The Shepheard Community Blood Center staff and all who participated
made this drive a success. In fact, Ms. Missie Usry, Enrollment and
Recruitment Manager at GMC-Augusta, reports “Georgia Military
College had thirty-nine presenting donors and twenty-one good units
collected, saving sixty-three lives!” As we like to say at GMC-Augusta,
Kudos for supporting such a worthy cause!

programs, or to schedule donating blood, please visit the website

On September 20th, Georgia-Military-College offered
free HIV Testing sponsored by The Gay Straight Alliance
and the Community Outreach Club. GMC-Augusta was

honored to host The Ryan White Outreach Team. There
primary objective was to give students the opportunity
to receive free HIV testing without utilizing needles.

According to the Center of Disease and Control and

Prevention over 1.1 million people in the United States
are HIV positive and about 162,500 are currently living
with the disease, but are completely unaware of having
it. The Ryan White Outreach Team is a non-profit

organization that is dedicated to Ryan White. Ryan was a
teenager from Indiana who contracted HIV from a blood

transfusion. He was 13 when he found out that he had

contracted HIV, doctors predicted his death to be

early, but he lived five years longer than anticipated.
Ryan White passed away on April 8th, 1990.

Book Club Guest Speaker: Professor Cathy Fishman

By Laura Martin

On September 6, 2018, the Book Club hosted a guest speaker named

Professor Cathy Fishman who is an established, published children’s book
author. Students at Georgia Military College’s Augusta campus may

recognize her from her many years of teaching English in our Humanities
Department. She is an inspiration to us as she proves that with hard work
and perseverance we can achieve anything we puts our mind to.

Professor Fishman’s career as an author began as she opened a children’s
book store in her home. As she continued her business, she began to read
and pour herself into the children’s books in her store. She states that,
“The more I read the more I realized I could do this too”. One day she

officially decided that she wanted to try to write children’s books herself,
and in that moment her career as a writer began.

Her writing career has launched many beloved titles that include: When
Jackie Met Hank, Soup, On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, On Purim, On
Passover, and many other titles. These children’s books are a reflection of
the character of Professor Fishman herself as they exemplify her journey
through writing.

As her children were growing up, she learned with them about their

Jewish faith as they all attended their synagogue. Learning more and more
about her Jewish faith inspired her to use her newfound knowledge as the
inspiration for a Jewish holiday series. With a different take on the coined
phrase that one should write what they know, she states “I wrote not
about what I was learning about, but what I was learning that spoke to
me”. This inspiration launched itself into a multi-book series.

As Professor Fishman’s career has continued, she has written many more
books and continued teaching at Georgia Military College. When she was
asked by students what one should write in this day in age Fishman

responded with, “Don’t follow a trend. Just write what is in your heart”.
This message and Fishman’s continual determination to publish her work
have come together to create a message of hope for young authors and
readers. Knowing to follow your heart instead of following the crowd is
so applicable to today’s world as we can forget that true art comes from
what speaks to us.

As a word of advice to the audience, Fishman stated that “If you want to
be a better writer you must write”. Knowing that writing takes hard work
and determination, and that it comes from the heart is a message that
all of the listeners at Fishman’s seminar walked away with. We are very
thankful as a student body for the time and effort that Professor

Fishman put into coming to speak at our school and her dedication to

teaching at Georgia Military College. Writing comes from the heart, and
this could not have been better presented by the inspiring message of
Professor Fishman’s journey as an author.

PTK Penny War

On September 10th Georgia Military College organized Phi Theta
Kappa Penny War. This event was designed to compete against each
department. The departments consisting of PER, Humanities, Social
Sciences, Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Administrative Staff. The
primary goal was to raise as much funds as possible for scholarships. Not
only did students participate but faculty members were welcomed to as
well. GMC– Augusta’s fundraiser was able to raise $111 towards the
scholarship with the Humanities Department winning the competition.

Constitution Day

On 17 September, Georgia Military College celebrated

Constitution Day which started by raising the flag. The Veterans’ Club

performed the flag ceremony while Mr. Ben Wheatley sang

The Star-Spangled Banner. The U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of
the land given by our forefathers who founded the United States of
America. Constitution Day is a reminder that every citizen in the United
States is entitled to Constitutional rights.

Dr. Swedan and her students presented visuals to encourage students
to go out and vote. The event was designed to inform students about
the 28th amendment (proposed). Students were encouraging their
peers to be active in the political process.

The productive day was concluded as selected presenters shared their
American journey as they presented the reasons that they decided to
be an American by choice.

Guest Speaker: Mr. James Aycock

On Thursday, September 12, motivational speaker and clothing

company owner, Mr. James Aycock delivered his tumultuous childhood

before a well attended presentation at the Augusta Campus of Georgia

Military College. As he was growing up, he experienced homelessness,
and parental incarceration/substance abuse. Aycock now thrives and
uses his past to instill in others that they too can achieve greatness.

Aycock was candid with his audience, giving listeners a glimpse of what
he had to endure:

“There’s a specific moment in my life, I was very young, probably
around the age 6 or 7… I was playing the PlayStation 1, we were
playing Rayman, with my brothers ... there was a knock on the
door… and this woman in a black tux was standing right in front of
me, a couple minutes later, my mom’s leaving in handcuffs and
we’re being taken to foster care.”

Bouts of unemployment and underemployment also plagued his
family. Aycock’s entire existence was marred by anxiety until he
discovered motivational speaking and speakers who are helping him to
realize his full potential. He has used this information and these
resources to give back to others, to provide them with insight and an
education, hoping to be a catalyst in their own personal development,
goal setting and growth.

This 19-year-old has the strength and the desire to go on, and is
successfully building his own brand. He says, “Okay life, I got you. Come
at me! Why not me, why shouldn’t it be me, please give me a reason to
inspire these kids more, let me overcome adversity again, and again, and
again, my entire life! ‘Cause if I get into these schools and I can share my
story, I can change their lives too.”

A male student shared, “The speaker did a very effective job of
relaying everyday situations and struggles and showing that no matter
what the situation may be, there is always a way to overcome. It
definitely got me thinking about my future and what I want to
accomplish in my life.”
A female student shared, “The speaker was very motivational to me! He
really inspired me because I have friends and family members that are
going through similar things. He will definitely help me to spread hope.
Really good job! I hope to hear a motivational speaker like him again.”
For James, today was another step in paying it forward, making a
difference and motivating others to do the same!

Guest Speaker: Mr. Patrick E. Morgan

Mr. Patrick E. Morgan is a Special Agent of the Georgia Bureau of

Investigation. Graduating from Georgia Southern University in ‘91, he
shortly began an internship in Augusta with the U.S Marshals. Soon after
his internship, he began working at the Columbia County Sheriff's Office
as a dispatcher, then road patrol, and worked his way up into becoming
an investigator, working in narcotics. Through working in narcotics with
the Sheriff's Office, he came into contact with the GBI. In 1998, the GBI
hired Morgan as an agent and he was sent to Thomson. He began work-
ing general field cases and worked joint cases including the FBI. Shortly
after joining the GBI, in 2007 Morgan was promoted to Assistant Special
Agent in charge of the Thomson office and in 2013 he became Special
Agent in Charge.

The Supreme Court of Georgia

On September 21st, a large group of GMC students visited Atlanta to
see the Supreme Court of Georgia. The Debate, Criminal Justice and

Homeland Security Clubs ventured out to learn the history of the
highest court in the state. Students were able to perform a

Mock-trial (as pictured below) to have a real experience on how the
judicial proceedings function. The Supreme Court justices meet 1-3
times every month to make decisions that are not specifically stated
in law. The Georgia Supreme Court is the highest legal authority in
the state that reviews cases that need further consideration.

Unresolved cases that require further legal interpretation are
presented to the United States Supreme Court. Although, there is a
possibility that the United States Supreme Court will take your case,
they may or may not accept or review your case.

Professor to Ponder: Guatemala

On August 27, 2018, Professor Sam Akers, of GMC Augusta, and five
other members of Wesley United Methodist Church, located in Evans,
Georgia, flew to Guatemala to participate in a mission trip that
spanned from Rio Dulce (Northeast) to Montericco (South),
Guatemala.

While in Guatemala, the mission team worked with Centro Cristiano
Cultural De Guatemala (CCCG), an organization that is dedicated to
feeding children of the outlying villages throughout Guatemala. The
main mission of CCCG is to provide daily breakfast to approximately 150
children who would otherwise not receive a nutritious meal throughout
their day.

In addition to the daily breakfast, CCCG provides several hundred pounds
of food to other villages in the surrounding area on a weekly basis,

depending on the amount of donations received. The program is an
ongoing initiative that relies solely on donations and has been in
operation for approximately fifteen years. They receive and host about
twenty-five mission teams per year and engage in other programs aside
from feeding children. One such program is the building of eco-stoves.
These stoves have been designed so that the smoke from the wood-fire
circulates in such a way as to maintain enough heat to provide
continuous cooking capabilities, as well as allowing very little smoke to
escape throughout the homes.

Another emphasis of CCCG are compost toilets. The process includes
taking toilet waste from an “outhouse” and placing that waste in a
facility with special red worms. These worms work their way through
the waste for approximately one month and turn the waste into

fertilizer. The fertilizer is then sold to put on crops.
