Today’s young people may not be so familiar with the word “Broughtupsy,” but those attending
this year’s Division of Cultural Affairs Literary Summer Camp may never forget the word and its
cultural importance.

“Broughtupsy” is a blended Bahamianized word derived from 2 English words: “brought up.” It
speaks of whether or not a person was well-raised by their parents, guardians, extended family
and community-at-large. One who portrays the positive morals, values, customs and traditions as
taught and passed on by their formers is considered to have broughtupsy. Those who do not are
found wanting and are considered to have none. It would be a great thing if all our young people
grow up and become positive contributors to our society; proving that they were well-raised.

It is very important that we promote and preserve our cultural heritage, both tangible and
intangible. Nowadays, our young Bahamians are constantly distracted from ‘all things Bahamian’
through social media, technology and exposure to expansive visual media. We must always seek
to keep our cultural heritage foremost in the minds of all Bahamians, but especially our youth.

This magazine shares some of the positive morals, values, customs and traditions as expressed by
our young people, attendees of the Literary Summer Camp. The campers were expertly guided
and instructed by young and dedicated professionals, enabling them to produce this outstanding
literary product of images, articles and design that highlights various aspects of Bahamian culture.
I am very impressed by this publication and moreso that this magazine was produced in only 4
weeks of instruction. May this magazine inspire all young people portrays positive morals,
values, customs and traditions.

So on behalf of the Government of The Bahamas and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, I
wish to congratulate the young creators and skilled advisors for producing this magazine, and I
encourage readers to enjoy and share the information contained in “Broughtupsy.”

EWHStar athletes, talented singers, musicians and performers, beauty queens, and world acclaimed artists, all have
a shot to experience a pop-up honorary junkanoo rush out at LPIA or recognition and handshake at the
A GOffice of the Prime Minister. And, yes, they all deserve it. A genius, I have never seen be awarded such
AGreception. You are probably wondering if there were/are any young Bahamian Einsteins? I am certain there

is, but their intellectual accomplishments, have yet to be newsworthy, and likely, we will only be wowed
about their splendid minds from an 'As I Knew Him/Her' speech. Thus, they often remain elusive
like a chiccarney and get no notable notice in their lifetime. And, yes, they deserve it too. The
worst part of this is that parents and the gifted learners end up feeling discounted, like
no one special…and may even start to believe this. And parents may often feel
that if they talk about their smart child, it feels like bragging – so they
stay silent. In the end, apart from some that do a social media report
card post, there is not much talk or showcasing of this.

Why is this? Maybe they are not celebrated because the merits of a

high intellectual do not have a platform internationally and no

opportunity to be featured– with this we do not get to share in, or
achieveBomoesntt� cAeCleAbDrEatiMIonCs

natural is devalued, unlike an athlete or performer who has to

train and practice to improve upon their talents. Also,

intellects do not provide us with entertainment; quite the

opposite enshroud them. They and their abilities are

belittled and evidently, those who have the power to

highlight them, find them (I say this in a sad whisper)

How can this be addressed and fixed? Thank God for
programs like The Primary School Students Of The
Year, and the Merit Awards that do award these high-
flyers and do their parts to highlight them. Gifted
children need stimulation, and if they do not get it,
there is scientific data that shows that they are at risk to
fizzle into averageness. Many may run out of steam
before they reach these sixth and twelfth grade awards.
Back in the day, there was the esteem Government High

School that many of our leaders were afforded the

opportunity and the ongoing pride of being a student of

such an institution. If a school like this existed today, where

every day those promising students were in an environment

and with jots of acknowledgment and or encouragement, for

simply being enrolled, there would not be a lag or this hushed

recognition. The positive domino effect of this would be that the

students enrolled would be known, much-admired, and talked about

for their great minds, and have a sense of promise and purpose.

Baroness Bianca, the beautiful British-Bahamian was born between a bay and a
beach in a billionaire’s bungalow in Bimini Bahamas.

Both Britain and The Bahamas, being bias and besotted by her, boasted of her
benevolence and blitheness, basically broadcasting that it boosted her beauty. But
Bianca was blessed at birth with bright brown eyes, brown hair and a beam that
beckoned and beguiled the most blasé being.

Big-hearted Bianca brought bread-basket items, boxed and bestowed it to the broke
and bankrupt, making sure they had a bite for brunch. She had a boutique called
‘Blue Bougainvilleas’that sold her brand of books, boots, bags, backpacks, blouses
for big bucks to the bourgeois, but bequeathed the benefits from the bottom line of
her boutique to the beggared.
