EXPLANATORY NOTES

The purpose of this assignment is to identify and analyse the Information about Bukit Kepong police station guerrilla attack. Therefore, collecting
information was spread into articles, pictures, clipped newspapers, and everything that researchers can find in the Online Finding Aids (OFA).

Although it was not an easy task because the materials related to Bukit Kepong police station guerrilla attack mostly were unavailable on the OFA
web, our group members did manage to find it with outer web sources, which is the historical website that provided information about tragedy.

On February 22 and 23, 1950, communist terrorists attacked Bukit Kepong. The Malayan Communist Party was a subject of antagonism on the
part of the British authorities. For British and Gurkha soldiers who are jammed into train stations, life starts to feel terrifying and frantic.
Communist assaults on both automobiles and villagers can happen at any time. The atmosphere of strife affected North Johor before to

independence. There was established a curfew. Bakri and Yong Peng neighbourhoods were known as communist strongholds. Lastly, Even though
not all of the images are included in the National Archive of Malaysia's online finding aids, we felt that they were still sufficient to demonstrate
that Malaysia has a hidden hero who might be overlooked by the next generation.

This finding aids book aims to help researchers to find and obtain the desired materials easily. All the materials are listed according to the type of
collection that document simple inventory and description of selected materials. The content of this finding aids is based the materials available in

the National Archives of Malaysia. . The list of available materials include records that related to a collection of types of images, videos,
broadcast, and more

INTRODUCTION TO
“BUKIT KEPONG INCIDENT”

FIGURE 1 INTRODUCTION
The site of the Bukit Kepong Police Station
The Bukit Kepong Incident was an armed encounter that took place on February 23, 1950 between the Police
set on fire by communist terrorists Federation of Malaya and the Communist Party of Malaya during the Malayan Emergency. This conflict took place
in an area around the Bukit Kepong Police Station in Bukit Kepong. The wooden station was located on the banks of
the Muar River about 59 km from the town of Muar, Johor. The incident began just before dawn when the
communists launched a guerrilla attack on the police station, killing almost all the police stationed there. When they
began the siege, the attackers firmly believed that they could defeat the police and take control of the police station
in a short time. This is due to several factors in their favour: their superior armament and numbers, and the station's
relative isolation. According to eyewitnesses, about 200 communists attacked, led by Muhammad Indera, a Malay
communist. Against all odds, the cops, led by Sgt. Jamil Mohd Shah, refused to surrender despite repeated calls from
the communists to lay down their arms. Several officers were killed as the gunfire continued, and two wives of the
defending officers took up arms when they discovered their husbands had died in combat urge surrender. The
defenders replied that they would never surrender and continued to fight. Another officer's wife (Fatimah Yaaba) and
her daughter were also forced to do the same. His refusal led to his execution. In the last hours of fierce fighting, the
communists set fire to the barracks and the officers' station. Two women and their children were burned in the
marriage rooms. At that time only 3 policemen plus a city guard lived. They ran out of the burning station because
they could not stand the heat. Then they stormed the communist position and killed at least three of them.

FIGURE 2 INTRODUCTION
Pictures of memories of Bukit Kepong policemen
During the attack, reinforcements were sent from Kampung Tui while the battle echoed through several of the
nearby villages. A group of villagers, led by village chief Ali Mustafa from Kampung Tui, was escorted by 13
AP/HG (Auxiliary Police/National Guard). They were ambushed by the communists on the road half a kilometre
from the train station. The villagers were outmatched by the communists, who used automatic weapons instead of
rifles and shotguns held by the villagers. Several guards from Village were injured and killed. Though he stopped
halfway, his presence relieved some of the pressure from Bukit Kepong's defenders and forced a general Communist
retreat. Due to the unbalanced situation, Ali Mustafa ordered his guards to retreat while the rest were asked to
defend the perimeter around the city of Bukit Kepong. The communists finally withdrew after burning down the
municipal office and robbing some shops. At the same time, another group of village guards from Kampung Durian
Chondong came to Bukit Kepong on a sampan to render assistance. On the way they were also ambushed by the
communists. About half of the 7 villagers in the group survived to continue to Lenga. They got there at 10:00 am,
and that's when the Bukit Kepong Police Station received the first news of the attack. Only about five hours after
the first shot, the communists managed to break through their defences and set the place on fire. Then they retreated
into the jungle.

. to three miles inland by narrow lanes and tyres. There are only a thousand people living there.

For instance, British and Gurkha soldiers alike are crammed into train stations. Some of them have recently returned
from battle or are on duty in a variety of locations. Clearly visible as the train approaches the station is the team
made up of the British and Gurkha soldiers. Many new British and Gurkha soldiers returned from security operations
targeting communists in the north when Othman Yusof and his wife Limah arrived at Kluang station in their journey
to Pagoh for their duties. Three years later, the Third World War began exactly on schedule. The impact is still
palpable and recent in memory. The British tried to impose the Malayan Union after regaining control, but the
Malays were more accepting of the resistance than the Malays due to the policy's denial of kings' sovereignty and
privileges. They started protesting and clamouring for an independent state. The British government had to deal with
its hostility to the Malayan Communist Party in light of that circumstance.

be an illegal political party. They engaged in violent behaviour through illegal operations after the ban. Life starts to
ACCESSIONING NUMBER: feel scary and hectic. Government-imposed limitations that prevent free mobility are another factor adding to this
1998/0009604W pressure. Communist attacks can occur at any time, both in the village and on attacks against vehicles used for public
transportation like buses and cars.

In North Johor, progress and development are still strange concepts. The wilderness is undisturbed and remains
virgin. Puyu and sepat fish can be seen from the river bank because the river is clear enough to view the bottom. His
tranquilly has not been compromised. It still retains its natural beauty. Their tranquil way of life is supported by
farming, tapping rubber, gathering rattan along the border of the forest, and fishing for fish and lobster in canals and
wetlands. There are no modern means of communication. There are no tar roads or red dirt embankments. The Muar
River is their primary route of communication. If necessary, they use boats to transport their income from Muar to
Pekan Lenga.

HISTORY (BEFORE THE INCIDENT

Gurkha Soldiers in Malayan Emergency. A curfew was put in place. The neighbourhoods of Bakri and Yong Peng were noted as communist hotspots. The
communist movement grew more powerful every day, and they never gave up hope of gaining control either freely or
forcibly. They are constantly looking for ways to increase their influence. They move swiftly if they spot an opening.
As Bukit Kepong is a tranquil area with no indication that the CPM will move there, the government's decision to
remove all police officers from Bukit Kepong created space for the CPM to increase its influence and they were able
to draw some village youngsters. People who were impacted by the communist struggle were educated there, at the
Chinese idol of Bukit Kepong. Everything is influenced by communism. History indicates that the CPM's primary
emphasis area is the state of Johor. Miller (1972: 32) noted that before it was publicised nationwide, the declaration
of emergency had already started in some parts of Johor and Perak.

According to eyewitness accounts, about 180 Communists attacked, led by Malay Communist Muhammad Indera.
Despite the odds, the police officers led by Sgt. Jamil Mohd Shah refused to surrender, despite numerous communist
calls for them to lay down their arms. The communists surrounded the police station with half at the front and the rest
surrounding the police station. The fighting started around 4.15am. When Spy Jaffar bin Hassan challenged and shot

joined the fight when they found their husbands killed during the fighting.

Around 5.00 a.m., the Auxiliary Police team, along with a group of villagers fully armed with rifles and shotguns,
mobilised from Kampong Jawa and moved to provide assistance, led by Penghulu Ali bin Mustaffa. They were ambushed
by communists tasked with preventing outside assistance, and some villagers, as well as the communists, were killed in the
fighting. The communists also destroyed both Bren Gun positions around this time.

Mariam Ibrahim, the wife of spy Mohamad Jaafar, was apprehended by communists around 7 a.m. Mat Indera, the
communist group's leader, is said to have forced Mariam to make a surrender request to the police, which was ignored by
Jamil. Fatimah Yaaba and her son Hassan are currently detained and forced to call the police to surrender. Those who
survived refused to give up and fought until the bitter end. Mariam was injured and Fatimah was killed when they refused
to surrender. Fatimah's husband, spy Abu Bakar Daud, who worked as a boat driver on the Muar river, also fought against
the communists until he was injured while defending his boat after being shot in the chest and hand.

DURING THE INCIDENT

In the last moments of that great battle, the Communists set fire to the Officer Barracks and the Police Station as a
whole. Two women and their children were also burnt in the officer's barracks. At that time, only three policemen
and a village guard were still alive. They rushed out of the burning hall and stormed the Communist position, killing
at least three members of the terrorist group who tried to stop them. Meanwhile, the Communists continued to shoot
those who tried to flee from the burning police station. And at this point, the villagers of Durian Chondong on the
west side sent a boat to Lenga to inform the authorities of the attack.

After five hours of fighting, the Communists manage to capture and burn the Bukit Kepong Police Station. They then
retreated into the forest and left traces of destruction as well as horrific death. The communists also threw the
wounded and the bodies of the slain policemen into the fire.

People think of the battle at Bukit Kepong as a tragic loss, even though it made the government and people
more determined to fight the Communist insurgency. The war against the Communist insurgency got a
huge morale and honour boost when a small force fought back against overwhelming odds. It is estimated
that approximately 25 police officers were among those slain during the attack. The heroic deeds that these
warriors performed for Malaysia helped to ensure that they would never be forgotten. Up to this point, the
cemetery has been kept in a secure and well-maintained condition. The grass around the tombstones is also
maintained short and tidy, just like the tombstones themselves. This cemetery has a fence surrounding it to
prevent those who do not belong there from causing damage to the graves or to the surrounding area. The
names of the fallen are also engraved nearby the graveyard.

AFTER THE INCIDENT

After Malaysia attained its independence, the authorities of the country made the decision to reconstruct the
Bukit Kepong Police Department to a Police post. The reason for this is that they wish to honour the memory
of the soldiers who lost their lives during the attack. Additionally, the police station was reconstructed so that
it could be converted into a museum and gallery that displays artefacts and events from the town's past.

Citizens are able to cultivate a sense of nationalism within themselves as they come to recognise the value of
the sacrifices they have made. In addition to that, there is a fully operational police station housed within the
building. The Bukit Kepong police post is extremely well-equipped in comparison to how other police post
typically operate. To put it simply, it was a building that housed both a museum or gallery and a police post
in the same space.

survived during the communist’s attack at the Bukit Kepong Police Station. This event was conducted around 43 years after the incident
happened, which is in 1993 and took for almost 1 hour and 43 minutes. This event contains the opening speech, prayer reciting, the opening
ceremony by Y. BHG. Dato’ Zakiah Hanum and more. This event is to open people’s eyes regarding the importance on preparing ourselves
for something that sometimes we never expect it will happen to us in our life. Not only that, we also need to appreciate those people who
were sacrificed their own life in protecting our country from the communists’ attacked. This incident has killed a lot of police members so
this is why we need to do a remembering event to them so that their sacrifices for our country will always being remembered by the future
generation.

fire of hundreds of communist terrorists. Jamil and his members took refuge from the bullets coming from inside the fortress at the train
station. They fought for almost two hours at a time. Despite the enemy's strength being almost seven times greater than theirs, Jamil and his
men ignored the situation. With limited weapons and ammunition, they still try to survive lest the station fall into enemy hands. At around
6:30 am, the communist terrorists blew their trumpets a second time, demanding that the police officers surrender. Despite realizing that
many of its members had been killed and badly injured, Jamil still refused to give up but continued to shout. Angry at Jamil's holy screams,
the communist terrorists blew their trumpets for the third time. Apparently the blow was a signal to tell his comrades to step up the attack. 2
wives of policemen also fought when they found out that their husbands had been killed.

At about 7:00 a.m., communist terrorists began changing tactics. They arrested the wives of policemen, Miriam Ibrahim wife of Constable
Mohammad Jaafar, Fatimah Yaaba wife of Constable Abu Bakar Daud and her son Hassan. The communists forced them to appeal to the
police to surrender. The policemen ignored this dirty tactic and continued to fight to the end. As a result, communist terrorists injured Miriam
while Fatimah was killed. Meanwhile, Fatimah's husband, Constable Abu Bakar Daud was injured in the chest and hand while defending his

CONCLUSION

CONCLUSION

As we all know, Finding aids are tools that assist users in locating information within a particular record group, collection, or series of archival materials. Published and
unpublished inventories, container and folder lists, card catalogues, calendars, indexes, registers, and institutional guides are all examples of finding aids. Finding aids are
formal publications that assist a user in locating information about a record group, collection, or series of archival materials. In this matter, OFA has helped us find
information on our topic, the Bukit Kepong event. The Bukit Kepong event is a historical event in Malaya.

The battle in Bukit Kepong was a defeat in physical terms but gave a victory in terms of mental and fighting spirit. The small force was enthusiastic and tenacious in
defending their dignity from the intrigues of communist terrorists to surrender despite having to face an enemy that was 10 times stronger than them. The communist
terrorists also suffered numerous injuries. This is a victory not only for oneself and family and friends, but for the country and the nation. By surrendering, police officers
can save their lives and their families' lives by surrendering, but they realize that they are fighting for something more important than their lives. They fought to save their
homeland from being colonized by Communist terrorists. May Allah shower His mercy on their souls.
