Japanese Greetings
Greetings are referred to as “aisatsu” in Japanese. It also includes some
common daily expressions. As for most countries, culture is embedded in
the way people greet one another. In Japan, there are rules or expectations
in their unique language which may not be the same to others. But to learn
the Japanese language is better not to compare to what is being practiced
elsewhere, because the Japanese did not create their language for
foreigners.

Common Japanese Expressions
This part of the lesson is made up of useful Japanese expressions that
are often heard when dealing with the locals. This will familiarize the
learner with a range of Japanese phrases. Memorizing these expressions,
putting into practice by speaking aloud until such time when the learners
feel confident or have the opportunity to use them casually will make
them sound like a native.
1. Yatta I did it!
2. Hontou Really?
3. AA, Sou desuka Oh, I see
4. Mochiron Of course!
5. AA, Yokatta Oh, good

Self-introduction
Jikoshoukai is the Japanese word for “self-introduction.”, jiko refers to
one’s self; while shoukai means introduction. Next to greetings or
“aisatsu”, this is the second important thing a learner should master.
Theoretically, each country has its own way of introducing one’s self. In
Japan, the manner of introduction includes name, age, origin, nationality
and something about oneself. To get a good first impression, it is vital to
learn how to do it right.
Example:
Ohayou gozaimasu. Hajimemashite, Watashi wa Benito Santos desu. Ni
juu hassai de dokushin desu. Firipin jin desu. Taguig City no Central
Bicutan kara kimashita. Watashi wa IBM no shain desu. Douzo
yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

Katakana Characters
As mentioned,
there are three
Japanese
writing
systems, the
Hiragana,
Katakana and
Kanji. This
time, the other
set of phonetic
Japanese
syllabary is
Katakana that
is mainly used
in foreign
words, or loan
words, and
onomatopoeia.
Originally, they
were part of
Kanji, and each
of them has a
counterpart in
Hiragana.
Therefore,
these Kana,
both Hiragana
and Katakana,
are sounds
only.
Another function of Katakana is to write native
Japanese words with extreme emotion to emphasize
the feeling of the writer. Some also use that for
Japanese names to sound foreign though with an
accompanying Kanji equivalent.

Kanji
If Kana is already established, among the three Japanese writing systems,
Kanji is the most ancient and originated from China. This is a bit more
complicated than the two, Hiragana and Katakana, but interesting to learn.
It is not syllabary because it contains meaning in addition to sound.
Kanji is a widely used Japanese script, where the Hiragana and Katakana
were initially formed. It depicts meaning. It could be a noun, adjective or
verb. For some adjective and verb stems, Hiragana follows. That Kanji is
referred to as Okurigana, meaning that it leads the reader to the meaning
it conveys.
