Fire Life Safety Module 1 for ERT

Reading Material for ERT Members of Yangon.

Keywords: FLS,ERT

 Dry Powder fire ex nguishers should not be used in the following scenarios: Fires involving

electronic equipment over 1000v, Kitchen fires involving cooking oil, Fires raging in enclosed
spaces.

Carbon dioxide : Carbon dioxide fire ex nguishers are the primary
ex nguisher used in ex nguishing electrical fires. You will o en find CO2
ex nguishers in computer server rooms or areas where a large number
of electrical devices exist. The CO2 ex nguisher can be used to ex nguish
electrical fires and fires involving flammable liquids such as petrol. These
ex nguishers should not be used in confined spaces.

 CO2 Ex nguishers should not be used in the following scenarios: Fires involving flammable

metals, Kitchen fires, Fires involving materials like paper or tex les.

As effec ve as fire ex nguishers are, the
wrong ones can make a fire worse.

Classes of Fires

Fire is classified on the basis of the kind of fuel it burns. Correspondingly
there are different ex nguishers to tackle different types of fire. The fire
and its corresponding ex nguishing agent combina on must be adhered
to, not only for efficient firefigh ng but also because the incorrect
combina on might also turn lethal.

   

Class A

Fire in ordinary solid combus bles such as paper, wood, cloth and some
plas cs.

Class B

Fire in flammable liquids or flammable gases, petroleum greases, tars, oils, oil-
based paints, solvents, lacquers, or alcohols.

Class C

Fire involving energized electrical equipment such as computers, servers,
motors, transformers, and appliances.

Class D

Fire involving combus ble metals - especially alkali metals like lithium and
potassium, alkaline earth metals such as magnesium, tanium and zirconium
etc.

Class K

Fire with substances such as the animal and vegetable fats present in
commercial cooking oils and greases.

Always check the label on an ex nguisher before a emp ng
to put out a fire—or else they risk spreading the fire further.

Using P.A.S.S Method in Fire Ex nguishers

Having fire ex nguishers placed in strategic loca ons throughout your
office building is important. But don’t forget : a fire ex nguisher is only
as useful as the person opera ng it.

Before using the fire ex nguisher, check the pressure gauge
first.
Remove the portable Fire Ex nguisher from the hook/rack.
Hold Ex nguisher upright by carrying it’s handle. Hold Firmly.

Stand approximately 2 meters (or) 6 feet away from the fire,
otherwise the force of discharge may sca er the fire. An
Outdoor fire should be approached from an upwind posi on.

And follow the steps :

1 P —Pull out the locking pin, breaking the metal tamper seal.

2 A — Aim the hose/nozzle at the base of the fire.

3 S — Squeeze the lever.

4 S — Sweep from side-to-side.

What P.A.S.S Looks Like in Ac on

Here is an educa onal video so to learn what the P.A.S.S method looks
like in ac on. This short video explains how to properly inspect fire
ex nguishers and covers the P.A.S.S. system for proper, effec ve fire
ex nguisher usage.

Fire Blanket

Fire Blanket is a great op on for containing fires and protec ng people
from flames—but not for figh ng a fire that’s already spreading. Fire
blankets, along with fire ex nguishers, are fire safety items that can be
useful in case of a fire. These nonflammable blankets are useful in
smothering fires by not allowing any oxygen to the fire. It consists of a
sheet of a fire retardant material which is placed over a fire in order to
smother it.

 If a fire is becoming widespread, a fire blanket can’t be deployed

effec vely. If the fire is extensive, it’s NOT a good idea to a empt to use a
fire blanket.

Watch this video to learn how to correctly use a fire blanket.

What to Do If You See Fire or Smoke

Accidents Happen

Workplace accidents do happen. Even if we could prevent all of the
(different forms of) hazardous energy from hi ng people, we cannot
stop accidents from happening because they are unplanned or
uncontrolled events. We should know how to protect ourselves and our
colleagues should there ever be an actual fire.

INFORM

When you discover smoke or fire, report
immediately.

1 Dial Emergency Phone ( 555 ) or Dial security office. For SQMO,
Emergency Hot Line 5735 or 01 9255 010.

2 Iden fy yourself by name and department.
3 Explain the exact loca on of the fire or smoke.
4 Describe the situa on of fire or smoke.
5 Report injury if any.

Manual Call Point

Manual call point which is usually referred to as an
MCP is the point in a building where a switch used
manually to ac vate fire alarm, this requires human
interven on.

Manual call points switches are used along with the automa c alarm
system. Usually, they are connected to a central fire alarm panel that is
connected to the building’s alarm system.

1 Iden fy yourself by name and department.
2 Explain the exact loca on of the fire or smoke.
3 Describe the situa on of fire or smoke.
4 Report injury if any.

By calling emergency line / security office or by ac va ng MCP

1 The Fire Command Center will be no fied.
2 ERT will be dispatched to the scene.
3 CMT will be no fied.
4 All employees will hear from our emergency communica on

system.

Ex nguish the Fire

Always save life first, whether your own or
others. It is highly recommended to raise the
alarm first before a emp ng to put it out.

Only use a fire ex nguisher if it's safe. Always check :

Is the fire large?
Has the fire spread to the walls or ceiling?
Is the fire smoky?

If you already checked off any of the above boxes, you shouldn't try to
ex nguish the fire alone. Instead, you should proceed to evacuate
immediately by leaving the firefigh ng to the professionals. If you are
ERT member, follow instruc on from your ERT Leader and CMT. You are

required to make awareness on your own evacua on routes before
figh ng the fire.
At all mes staff shall act in a manner to minimize panic situa ons -
PANIC IS A KILLER. Always stay low when the area is smoke logged.
Smoke is a more lethal killer than fire and the freshest air is normally
found close to the floor.

Evacuate

All non-ERT and non-CMT team members are
required to proceed to respec ve Assembly
Areas immediately in case of emergency.

Here are some useful ps for your during evacua on from the building.

Check the door handle temperature.
Close doors and windows behind you.
If there's smoke, stay close to the floor.
Cover your face.
Take short breaths.
Proceed just as you would during a regular fire drill.

Lesson 10 of 10

Summary

It is everyone's responsibility to keep our
second home, our guests, our tenants and
our colleagues safe.

Key Takeaways

When you open the door from fire area, make sure you are
using proper method.

Before opening any door in the fire area check it first. A hot
door handle indicates that the fire has spread, DO NOT OPEN
THE DOOR.

Never stay fire or smoke territory without using any personal
protec ve equipment.

Make awareness on your own evacua on routes before you
fight the fire.

Once the order to evacuate is given or you believe you are in
personal danger, LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELTY and CLOSE
DOORS BEHIND YOU.

Everyone—regardless of their department or posi on—is
responsible for preven ng workplace fires. And everyone
should know what to do in the event of a real emergency.
