On average one
Australian child is
born with cystic
fibrosis every week.
It is the most
common life
shortening genetic
condition in
Australia. One in
every 25 people
carry the gene.
There is no cure.

Why support our Cause

The treatment for cystic fibrosis is lifelong, ongoing and relentless. People living with cystic fibrosis
can spend the equivalent of four months of full-time work each year receiving treatment, take up to
80 pills a day, undergo tough physiotherapy regimes, hospital admissions several times a year and
constantly cope with debilitating lung and gastrointestinal disease.

The average life expectancy for Australians living with cystic fibrosis is less than 38 years. The
prevalence of cystic fibrosis in Australia is the same as childhood leukaemia. The difference is that
over 95% of children with leukaemia will be cured. There is still no cure for cystic fibrosis. When you
are living with cystic fibrosis, every day matters.

The 65 Roses story dates back to 1965 when a young boy pronounced cystic fibrosis as 65 Roses.
Since then, 65 Roses has been synonymous with our cause and the rose has been adopted as the
national symbol for Cystic Fibrosis.

As an organisation Cystic Fibrosis Queensland (CFQ) is the only Queensland based non-profit
organisation providing support services for the cystic fibrosis community across Queensland,
including: in-hospital programs, lifesaving equipment, physical activity subsidies and emergency
funding, advocacy and community education, research and clinical treatment.

Our organisation receives less than 13% of our funding from Government. We rely heavily on
community fundraising initiatives and corporate charity partnerships.

What will your impact be

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES SUBSIDIES | CAREER DEVELOPMENT SERVICES | DISCOUNTED
EDUCATION COURSES | ROSE COTTAGE HOSPITAL STAY ACCOMMODATION | BOREDUM BUSTER BAGS
MEDICAL LOAN EQUIPMENT | HOSPITAL PARKING SUBSIDIES | ADVOCACY | RESEARCH

We offer a range of support programs and services to assist people living with cystic fibrosis. In addition we also
provide experiences and education programs for siblings and parents.
An adult living with cystic fibrosis will spend up to two hours in physiotherapy each day clearing the mucus and
infection from their lungs. Not only to breathe but to support overall health and wellbeing.
A portable nebuliser is light and compact and reduces the respiratory treatment for someone with CF from two
hours to 20 minutes per day.
CFQ is on a mission to provide all of our members with a subsidy to go towards purchasing their own personal
nebuliser. This respiratory equipment would provide our CF members with:
• Improved health management for people with CF, particularly in times of disease exacerbation
• Reduced duration and frequency of hospitalisation to manage CF
• Better quality of life and less social isolation for CF patients by reducing in-hospital days
• Improved health management compliance, necessary to maintain optimal health
• Reduced financial stress on families living with CF
