GOOGLE CODE TO LEARN CONTEST
Shri Krishna Madhusudhanan of Class 5 was declared winner of the Google India Code to Learn Contest
2015. He designed a computer shooting game, „Shoot to Score‟ using „Scratch‟ platform. The Google India „Code
to Learn‟ contest launched by former President APJ Abdul Kalam has been organised since 2014 for students of
classes V to X in which children across the country submit projects that can be anything from a software applica-
tion for a social cause to a game or an educational tool.
Shri Krishna applied for the contest along with 900 other students from the city. After clearing various
rounds, he had to compete with nine students from Bengaluru, Mysore and Mumbai for the finals in New Delhi.
The game has multi-player options and has a command list upfront explaining the various key controls to the user.
His project was selected for its unique, innovative design. The introduction of coding, and robotics as a part of the
curriculum has enhanced the analytical and logical thinking of young students.

We came across a water snake, some frogs and a rat. My uncle brought a lorry till the main road. We got into

morning, we brushed our teeth, took bath in the afternoon, and waited for food to be given to us.

Fun time with friends
I am a very lucky girl. I have many friends at school, home and wherever I go. At school, we play long jump,
high jump, fruit salad and many such games. We play these games in the playground and at the auditorium.
We also play carom board and chess indoors. At home, we play hop scotch, hide and seek , dog and the bone
etc. When it is raining or too hot to play outside, we play jigsaw puzzles, business and other board games. I
also play a lot when I go out with my friends and cousins to parks and resorts. I enjoy spending time with

My dad’s trip to the USA
My dad went on an office trip to the USA for 18 long days. I missed him very much. So, I asked my mother to
take me with her to the airport when my father returned home. At the airport, I saw a man selling flowers and
bouquets. I didn‟t want to give my father just one flower. So, I bought a whole bouquet of flowers. My dad
was surprised to see me with the bouquet so early in the morning. We travelled back home in the Benz car
provided by the Airlines. My dad had bought toys for my brother and me. He also showed me pictures of the
Statue of Liberty. All the pictures were beautiful, especially the Statue of Liberty, the Times Square and the
Brooklyn Bridge. I learnt a lot about USA, thanks to my dad.

Christmas is one of my favourite festivals because the season brings a lot of fun and cheer. I look forward to

It was so exciting to set the tree up and I enjoyed it. Finally, on Christmas day, I woke up to see a gift under
the Christmas tree. Wow! That was a gift from my dad. It was a microscope that I had wished for long. I was

THE PROUD LION (Countable and Uncountable nouns)
Once in a jungle, there lived a very proud and selfish lion. It asked everybody in the jungle to work for him.
One day, the animals said, “We are thin, tired and weak because of working for you”. The lion said, “I can do
anything, so you should work for me”. The animals said, “We will accept what you say if you win our
challenge. You have to count whatever we give and tell us the number correctly”. “Ha, Ha, Ha, I can do
anything”, laughed the lion. On the first day, the animals brought apples, pebbles, things and leaves and he
counted them easily. The next day, the animals brought water, mud and some rice. The lion tried for many
hours but he was not able to count anything. He accepted that he could not do everything and stopped asking
other animals to work for him.

Volcano - Krakatoa
In IV Std, I learnt about volcanoes in both Geography and English. I looked up for more information about vol-
canoes. I read about Krakatoa the worst eruption. I would like to share it.
Indonesian plate slides under Asian plate and comes again. When this happened Krakatoa erupted. In1883, Kra-
katoa was dormant (sleeping volcano) waiting to explode. In March 1883, 4 months before the worst eruption, a
tremor was felt in the nearby the fourth point lighthouse. In March 1883, 16 weeks before the worst eruption, it
created a very large tremor. The glass was broken in the fourth point lighthouse. On 20th May 1883, 4 weeks be-
fore the eruption also, a very large tremor was felt in the fourth point lighthouse. In March 1883, 3 weeks before
the worst eruption, a very large tremor was felt. The captain of a Dutch ship, which was passing slowly and very
closely, recorded these events.
On 27th May 1883, fishermen who were fishing in the surrounding waters of the volcanic island of Krakatoa,
heard a loud noise. They looked towards the volcanic island of Krakatoa and saw the volcano erupting. The erup-
tion of the uninhabited volcanic islands of Krakatoa was so loud that the sound was heard over a twelfth of the
earth‟s surface. The eruption also caused a great tsunami. It killed more than 3,400 people of Indonesia. The
fourth point lighthouse was totally damaged in the tsunami.

If dinosaurs never went extinct
Dinosaurs became extinct before human civilization developed. An interesting thought came to my
mind. Would we have dominated the Earth now, if dinosaurs still existed? Would we have seen the
development that we have seen now or would we have become extinct?
The disappearance of the dinosaurs was a wonderful thing for us. If dinosaurs weren‟t extinct,
mammals would have never come out, as they had been hiding for over a hundred million years. The creatures
that hid themselves from these terrible lizards came out from hiding after the asteroids killed these lizards.
Evolution happened in many ways and thus man evolved.
Though man is very intelligent when compared to these small-brained dinosaurs, we would not have
been able to fight against their power. We would have fallen prey to them and become extinct. The world
would not have been what it is today. Thanks to the extinction of dinosaurs, the world has seen tremendous
development.

Book Review – Charlie And The Chocolate Factory
During the summer holidays, I read a lovely book and doing the review of the same. The name of the
book is „Charlie and the chocolate Factory‟. The author of the book is „Roald Dahl‟. The genre of the book is
„Fantasy‟. The story revolves around young Charlie Bucket and his experiences inside the chocolate factory of
genius Chocolatier Willy Wonka.
The writing style of author is simple and imaginative. The flow of the book is very gripping and interest-
ing. It is based on the author‟s visit to a chocolate company during his school days. The narration of the story is
very creative.
The illustrations in the book give good visual depiction and leave the reader in his or her own imaginary
world. There are five kids in the story who win the golden tickets to visit the amazing and mysterious Wonka‟s
chocolate factory. They all are from different social backgrounds and have different attitudes. This book also
tells the importance of good manners and shows that values and morals are important for one to succeed in life.
I enjoyed reading this wonderful book and would recommend it to all my friends and relatives.

When I was born, God gave me a special gift – a joint family. The head of the family was my Grandpa. My
grandparents always took care of me. I grew up in a world of love and joy with my grandparents. Especially,
my grandpa took care of me like a precious treasure. When I joined school, I was not happy. I thought I
would have to leave my grandpa, but I became very happy when I came to know that he would will drop and
pick me up from the school. I was very happy as my grandpa used to help me in studies. One day, he
complained of pain in his chest and was not able to walk. My father and uncle admitted him in a hospital. He
was unconscious. The next morning, everyone at home was crying. I did not understand what had happened.
Why was everyone crying? Then I saw my father and uncle bring my grandpa in a bed and I thought he was
sleeping. After some time, they took him to some other place and he never came back.
Later, when I asked my grandma about my grandpa, she told me that grandpa would not come back as he
now became a star in sky.
There are so may starts in the sky, I do not know which one my Grand-Pa is.
I lost my best treasure. I wish that no child should lose its best treasure. We should take care of their
grandparents, as they are the best treasure that one can ever have.

Unique Gift –Gift Cards
On his 13th Birthday, Ganesh is eagerly waiting for the birthday gift from his Uncle. Every year his uncle used to
send him a unique gift. After a while, the courier person delivered the gift from Uncle Ram. Ganesh immediately
opened the gift and found a Visa card from IDIDI bank with a „Happy Birthday‟ greeting. Ganesh is surprised to
see a unique gift this time also, but at the same time, he is a bit upset to see such a small gift. So, he called his uncle
Ganesh:„Uncle, How are you? Thank you for the unique birthday gift this time also. The gift looks nice. Is it the
similar to the card my father uses to pay for his purchases?‟
Uncle: „Happy Birthday Ganesh. Yes, it is similar to the card that your father is using, but there is a small differ-
ence. I have sent you a prepaid gift card. You can use this to purchase anything you want. I have loaded the card
with Rs.3000/-, so you can use the card till you use all the amount in the card‟
Ganesh:„Can I use the card to withdraw money from ATM and purchase from online stores as well?‟
Uncle: „You can use this card to purchase from any online store or at shops wherever they accept Visa cards, but
you cannot use this card for withdrawing cash‟
Ganesh: „You told me that this card is little different from my father‟s card, please tell me how this card is differ-
ent?‟
Uncle: „To answer this, I have to explain the 3 major types of cards that are available to pay for purchases.
One is the PREPAID card. Prepaid cards are also known as PAY BEFORE AND USE LATER cards. You have to
load money into the card before using it to pay for your purchases. The one I have sent to you is the Prepaid Gift
card, where I have already loaded the card with Rs.3000/- so that you can use it until the card has some money left.

Once you have used all the money in the card, you cannot use the card. There is another type of prepaid card
called RELOADABLE PREPAID card, where the card can be loaded with money as and when we want and use
it till the expiry date mentioned in the card. Americans use RELOADABLE PREPAID cards to give pocket mon-
ey to their children, so that they can monitor where and how the children spend the money. Currently, the gift
cards cannot be reloaded after the first time.
The second type of card is known as DEBIT card. Your father will be having a DEBIT card. Debit cards are
known as BUY NOW AND PAY NOW cards. Your father‟s debit card is linked to the savings or current account
that he has in a bank. The debit cards can be used as long as there is a balance available in the bank account, but
there may be a daily withdrawal limit as decided by the bank.
The third type of card is CREDIT card. Your father may have one credit card also. The credit cards are known as
BUY NOW AND PAY LATER cards. This card is a kind of loan given by the bank. Bank could have evaluated
your father‟s repaying capacity to determine the amount for which your father can use the card. Any delayed re-
payment will incur interest for the unpaid amount, meaning that your father would be paying additional amount if
he miss to pay the entire bill amount on or before the repayment due date. Your father can make repayment as
and when possible and continue to use the available credit limit till the card expiry date”
Ganesh:“Thank you very much Uncle, I have learnt something new today. With your permission I want to share
this information to my friends through my school magazine, hope you welcome this.”
Uncle:“Definitely Ganesh! I am good to know that you want to share the information to your friends. Enjoy your
Birthday today. Take care. Bye”

Title – Tales of Akbar and Birbal
Without Birbal, Akbar‟s stories are not very interesting. Birbal‟s intelligence and his wisdom give a beautiful
touch to the simple stories and make them interesting. The events narrated in this book made me curious about
his other stories. The stories tell us how Birbal‟s intelligence saved Akbar several times. The part that I loved
the most was when Akbar asks his ministers about the punishment that would be given to the person who would
touch his moustache. I liked Birbal‟s wit in solving this problem.
I learnt that Birbal‟s real name was Mahesh Das and that he had a son who troubled him a lot. I would definite-
ly recommend this book to my friends because my friends would enjoy it too.

Like a frisky teenager, who has lost its head
As it nears the plains, it‟s no longer violent
It flows smoothly through fields and houses
It‟s now an adult, calm, solemn and silent
Now it becomes one with sea very gradually
All its friskiness gone, its water salt
So, thus ends the baby stream‟s great journey.

Advancement of Science and Technology
Just a peek in today‟s world will show us the importance of advancement in the main fields of science
and technology. Advancement of Science and Technology is one of the major factors that have helped many
developed countries to reach the place where they are now. Robots are replacing humans almost everywhere.
They are equipped with various features and they have even replaced waiters in some restaurants in China.
Humanoids, the robotic versions of robotic versions of humans carry out almost all the activities that humans
perform ie., walking, moving objects etc. From the field of Science, good micro-organisms are used to
prepare drinks for human consumption. These microbes provide nutrients and stamina to the human body.
Electronic gadgets have become a part of our daily life, something that were considered a luxury by our
ancestors. We must also contribute to advanced living and help in making life easier although I know it is
easier said than done.

A Wonderful Year To Remember
This year of school has been a wonderful year to remember thanks to my beloved friends and dear
teachers. We had fun, and experienced love and care. Now you may ask me, every class does the same, how
different is mine from others? We had instances to cry, jump with joy and sink in sorrow. But, everyday, we
had a lesson to learn from the mistakes that we made. Teachers never punished us but explained to us our
mistakes and made us say “Happy Realization Day” quite often. We were motivated to perform and excel
every day. Our teachers made us realize that failures are the first step to success.
Our teachers dance with us, sing with us, have fun with us and at the same time care for us. . They love

is the only time when you could be mischievous and have fun at the same time. So enjoy it!!

One of my favourite tourist spots is Pondichery. This is my native place too. There are many places to

this is the reason why the location boards are written in English, Tamil and French. It is also famous for its
Vinayaka Temple. The waves at the beach are huge and so huge rock walls have been built to prevent erosion.
My other favourite tourist spots are Pune in Maharashtra and Ooty. I like these places because they are
cold. In Pune, I lived in a place called Maharbatta. In Maharbatta, there is an apartment named „Trillium,
which has 24 floors. I lived in the seventh floor of this building. I really miss Pune very much.

Today‟s past, a sure present of yesterday,
She would instead bear it all Does hold the song of stars and seas.
And would never let me fall. The dolphins that leap over tides and,

When she was still here on Earth, Do mark the difference „tween two worlds.
I still remember that day One, a world of peace and joy,
When fate decided to come in our way. The other, a bed of fire with fractals of ice.
What can you say? „bout the presents of the future and,

That moment, in every cell, The dawns of time? Well, won‟t thy heart speak those
I was filled with remorse songs?
My throat sore, my voice hoarse. Of cries and laughs, the lessons hard-struck?
I had lost my friend once and for all I would speak this one word
My soul mate with whom I shared Of winds and scary dooms.
My every climb and fall. The depth of the sea, and the end of the sky,
What shattered was my mirror, All sing a song,
And I lost her forever. A song of good and evil.
In your palms, lies the present of today,

But all lies in your palm,

Makes all the difference,

ism. Every player always says these lines before they play like an oath. This game has also taught me to do
what I like with utmost passion.

Time Travel – possible?
The first thing a person would think about time travel is, is time travel even possible? It might be! Al-
bert Einstein laid the groundwork for much of the theoretical science that governs most time travel research to-
day.
Of course, scientists like Galileo and Poincaré that came before him helped, but Einstein's theories of special
and general relativity dramatically changed our lives. Science fiction is the first place where time travel came to
life and one of my favourite science fiction is Doctor Who. Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television
programme produced by the BBC from 1963 to the present day. The programme depicts the adventures of the
Doctor, a time lord who is best expressed as time-travelling humanoid alien.
The Doctor explores the universe in his TARDIS, that is - Time And Relative Dimension In Space. Its
exterior appears as a blue police box which was a common sight in Briton. Accompanied by companions, the
Doctor combats a variety of foes, while working to save civilizations and help people in need.
Another time travelling science fiction is by Robert George Wells also known as H. G. Wells, who was
a prolific English writer in many genres, including novel and history. He is best remembered for his science fic-
tion novels, and he is called the father of science fiction. His most notable science fiction works are the Time
Machine , The Island of Doctor Moreau , The Invisible Man .
I am waiting for a day when time travel would be possible and we all would be able to travel into the
present and the future. Javed Mohamed Ashiq VIII -B

My experience as an event manager
Most people think that planning an event might be very easy but in reality, it is quite the opposite. Most of
the time, it is not the biggest details, but the smallest that matters. From refreshments to sponsors, it‟s usually the
minute detail that can make or break an event. As a part of our EDC activity, we were asked to manage an event
for the other half of our class. First off, we needed a list of events . We then had to segregate the members into
different events. We made sure that it would be a fair competition. Then we moved on to the not-so-important
details (although all details were important to us) like seating arrangements, time management and a chance for
everyone to participate. After that we went on to the minor details like refreshments for the judges, sponsors etc.
We had comperes, game show hosts, judges and a chief guest ready for our events. We even went as far as posting
notices on the school notice board. I was very excited about this event and I hope I could coordinate more such
events in the future.

Life’s greatest teacher
“Success always hugs you in private , but failure always slaps you in public” is a quote which shows that
failure is the best teacher. For every success, you might have faced numerous failures. Failure is the first step for
success. It is a very powerful tool that teaches you many lessons. To achieve your personal best and reach
unparalleled heights, to make impossible possible, you can‟t fear failure. You must face be ready to face
difficulties in life and push yourself forward. The sweetest victory is the most difficult thing to achieve in life. To
achieve it, you must be prepared to embrace the prospect of failure. I personally feel that success tastes better if we
have gone through failures and learnt from it.

Tears And Roses There is hope for all….
There she sat in her secret garden They say, ‟Where there‟s a will, there‟s a way‟
A minute to midnight I sat thinking about it at the bay.
Gazing, softly at the skies. A lot of it is true.
The moon and skies gently watched over her. However, there was a decision, out of the blue
For me to take,
Her mahogany curls draped her shoulders There was a lot to stake
Her shoulders, bent over her banister. I could be losing my money.
Her mascara, ruined stained her cheeks
As she silently wept. Everything I did was not out of happiness,
I did not make my life a mess.
Confused were the clouds as to why she was But now there‟s courage in my heart,
crying. Chasing my passion will be my new start.
Her salty tears caressing the rose bushes
The only thing embracing her There is hope for all,
Was the cold and frosty, winter air. If you dare to take it on all.
As her tears on roses glimmered Life would be a bed of roses,
Under the full moon‟s gentle glow. You would not regret anything at all.
