29th June 2021 (Tuesday)
Complete the task below. Lengkapkan tugasan di bawah.

3. Look at the information. Write sentences using the comparative and superlative forms of the adjectives.
(page 40)
Lihat maklumat berikut. Tulis ayat menggunakan bentuk adjektif (kata sifat) perbandingan dan
superlative.

Comparative

 To make a comparison between two nouns. (Perbandingan di antara dua kata nama)
 Formula = noun (as a subject) + verb + comparative adjective + than + noun (as an object)

Example: An elephant is bigger than a tiger.

Superlatives

 Describes a noun by comparing it to two or more nouns to the highest or lowest degree.
(Menjelaskan kata nama dengan membandingkannya dengan dua atau lebih kata nama dengan tahap tertinggi
atau terendah)

 Formula = noun (as a subject) + verb + the + superlative adjective + noun (as an object)

Example: Whale is the biggest animal in the world.

The formation of the comparative and superlative depends on the number of syllables in the adjective:

1. One-syllable Adjectives
Comparative, + -er to the end of the adjective.
Superlative, + -est to the end of the adjective

Adjective Comparative Superlative

small smaller the smallest

wide * wider the widest

hot ** hotter the hottest

* When an adjective ends in the letter E, we just add the -R (for comparatives) or -ST (for superlatives).
Wider (correct) not wideer (incorrect).

** When an adjective ends in a consonant + short vowel + consonant (C + V + C), we normally double the last
letter. big - bigger - biggest, wet - wetter - wettest

Comparatives are often followed by than when comparing two things or people. (Ali is taller than Amir)

2. Two-syllable Adjectives ending in –Y
Comparative, remove the -y and add -ier to the end of the adjective.
Superlative, remove the -y and add -iest to the end of the adjective.

Adjective Comparative Superlative

crazy crazier the craziest

happy happier the happiest

early earlier the earliest

Example: It was the happiest day of my life.

My joke was funnier than yours.

3. Adjectives with Two or more Syllables
Adjectives with 2 syllables (that don't end in -y) and higher (3, 4 syllables etc), we use more for
comparatives and the most for superlatives.

Adjective Comparative Superlative
the most handsome
handsome more handsome the most nervous
the most enthusiastic
nervous more nervous

enthusiastic more enthusiastic

 Some exceptions with two-syllable adjectives ending in -er and -est:
narrow - narrower, simple - simpler, quiet – quieter

4. Irregular Forms

Adjective Comparative Superlative
good better the best
bad worse the worse
little less the least
more the most
many/much
