Comparative adjectives
Comparative adjectives are used to compare differences between the two objects (larger,
smaller, faster, higher). They are used in sentences where two nouns are compared, in this
pattern:
Kata sifat perbandingan digunakan untuk membandingkan perbezaan antara dua objek (lebih
besar, lebih kecil, lebih cepat, lebih tinggi). Mereka digunakan dalam ayat di mana dua kata
nama dibandingkan, dalam corak ini:
Noun (subject) + verb + comparative adjective + than + noun (object).
Kata nama (subjek) + kata kerja + kata sifat perbandingan + daripada + kata nama (objek).
2-syllable adjectives ending in -y: change the -y to –ier (Kata sifat 2-suku kata berakhir
dengan -y: tukar -y menjadi –ier)
1-syllable adjectives: add -er to the adjective
(Kata sifat 1-suku kata: tambah -er pada kata sifat)
My sister is much taller than me. Kakak saya lebih tinggi daripada saya.
It's colder today than it was yesterday. Hari ini lebih sejuk berbanding semalam.
Note: If the word ends: consonant-vowel-consonant, then the last consonant is usually
doubled in the comparative. Examples: big-bigger, fat-fatter, hot-hotter. (Catatan: Sekiranya
perkataan berakhir: konsonan-vokal-konsonan, maka konsonan terakhir biasanya digandakan
dalam perbandingan. Contoh: big-bigger, fat-fatter, hot-hotter.

My house is larger than hers. • Rumah saya lebih besar dari rumahnya.
This box is smaller than the one I lost. • Kotak ini lebih kecil daripada kotak saya
yang hilang.
Your dog runs faster than Jim's dog. • Anjing anda berlari lebih pantas daripada

COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE
Comparative (Boleh rujuk nota yang lepas)*
Superlatives
Describes a noun by comparing it to two or more nouns to the highest or lowest degree.
(Menjelaskan kata nama dengan membandingkannya dengan dua atau lebih kata nama dengan tahap tertinggi
atau terendah)
Formula = noun (as a subject) + verb + the + superlative adjective + noun (as an object)
Formula = kata nama (sebagai subjek) + kata kerja + the + superlatif + kata nama (sebagai objek)
Example: Whale is the biggest animal in the world. (Paus adalah haiwan terbesar di dunia.)
The formation of the comparative and superlative depends on the number of syllables in the adjective:
(Pembentukan perbandingan dan superlatif bergantung kepada bilangan suku kata dalam kata sifat:)
1. One-syllable Adjectives (Kata adjektif satu suku kata)
Comparative, + -er to the end of the adjective. (tambah -er pada akhir kata adjektif.)
Superlative, + -est to the end of the adjective. (tambah –est pada akhir kata adjektif.)
Adjective Comparative Superlative
Small (kecil) Smaller (lebih kecil) the smallest (paling kecil /sangat
kecil)
wide * (luas) Wider (lebih luas) the widest (paling luas / sangat
luas)
hot ** hotter the hottest
* When an adjective ends in the letter E, we just add the -R (for comparatives) or -ST (for superlatives).
Wider (correct) not wideer (incorrect).
* Apabila kata sifat berakhir dengan huruf E, kita hanya menambah -R (untuk perbandingan) atau -ST (untuk
superlatif).

** When an adjective ends in a consonant + short vowel + consonant (C + V + C), we normally double the last
letter. big - bigger - biggest, wet - wetter – wettest
** Apabila kata sifat berakhir dengan konsonan + vokal pendek + konsonan (C + V + C), kita biasanya
menggandakan huruf terakhir.
Comparatives are often followed by than when comparing two things or people. (Ali is taller than Amir)
Perbandingan sering diikuti apabila membandingkan dua perkara atau orang. (Ali lebih tinggi daripada Amir)
2. Two-syllable Adjectives ending in –Y
Comparative, remove the -y and add -ier to the end of the adjective.
Superlative, remove the -y and add -iest to the end of the adjective.
Adjective Comparative Superlative
the craziest
crazy crazier the happiest
the earliest
happy happier
early earlier
Example: It was the happiest day of my life.
My joke was funnier than yours.
