seals. His seven eyes stood out on stalks
as the scroll slowly unrolled to reveal the
suffering that was in store. Disaster upon
disaster was shown being unleashed on the
world and on mankind—war, earthquake,
famine, pestilence, plague. And afterward,
came Judgement Day, with God sitting on
His throne, as it thundered and flashed
beneath Him. The great Book of Life lay
open on His lap, while everybody, great
and small, lined up before Him to be judged.

But, at the very end of his vision, John
saw a new heaven on earth. It was the
Holy City, the new Jerusalem. The
walls were made of solid jasper and
the gates were carved out of pearl. The
foundations were encrusted with precious
jewels on every side. Water from the river
of life flowed down the middle of the great
street. On each side of it stood the tree of
life, rustling with healing leaves and heavy
with fruit. John heard a loud voice coming
from the throne above, saying, “Now the
dwelling of God is with men, and He will
live with them. They will be His people, and
God Himself will be with them and be their
God. He will wipe away every tear from
their eyes. There will be no more death
or mourning or crying or pain, for the
old order of things has passed away!”

Understanding the story

This is the last book of the New Testament, detailing a vision of Judgement Day
(the John in this story is not the original disciple). Though some of its contents are shocking,

its purpose was to make the Christian faith stronger at a time when the Roman authorities
were quashing the religion. The number seven features strongly in the Book
of Revelation because, in Hebrew tradition, this symbolizes perfection.
