Grover on a quest to the underworld and persuades Hades, the
lord of the underworld to retrieve the thunderbolt and return it to

The winged shoes: an introduction

In ‘Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief’, Percy, Annabeth, and
Grover start the dangerous quest. After Chiron gives Percy the
magical sword, Riptide, Luke, Percy's trainer and a fellow camper
gave Percy the winged shoes that his father, Hermes gave him.
When Luke says,’ Maia’ the shoes would start to fly. Percy was very
surprised. After all, for some days he was getting a lot of attention
ever since Poseidon claimed him as his son so he thought Luke
might ignore him but here he was giving Percy a magic item that
made him blush and he said,” Hey man, thanks''.This expresses
that he is grateful. But throughout the story, he did not use them
because then he would be in his father's bitter rival, the lord of the
sky, Lord Zeus’s domain.

The Winged Shoes: a history

Talaria is what Hermes’ magical wings shoes are called. Talaria
comes from Latin that means "of the ankle".They are made by
Hephaestus and Cyclops, especially for the messenger god. Talaria

4

is a divine vehicle. Hermes uses them for flying, and it is also his
symbol.
Some myths say he is a
tricker, he cheats people.
In the second book of the
Percy Jackson series, ‘The
Sea of Monsters’ Percy
meets Hermes, who
encourages Percy to help

Grover. In the myths, Talaria has also been worn by Perseus, the
son of Zeus when he was going to kill Medusa on the orders of
Athena. It is said that they are made of gold and were swift as a
fast bird.

The Furies

The Furies were three goddesses of vengeance and retribution
who punished men for crimes against the natural order. They were
also called Erinyes. They are symbolized by snakes and blood. The
Furies travelled the earth dispensing punishment, as well as
torturing souls in the Underworld. They didn’t take orders from
anybody but Hades, the lord of the underworld. The Furies were
created from the blood of Uranus, the ancient god of the sky. So
the Furies' parents are Uranus and Gaia, the mother goddess. They
are not evil, they are good But never show pity on the bad men.

5

They looked dangerous and people feared them but they never
harmed any good person.

Medusa

Medusa was one of the Gorgons. They had many living poisonous
snakes for hair and were very hideous creatures. But she was not
always a monster. Medusa was a priestess in Athena’s temple and
vowed to never marry. But she fell in love with Poseidon and they
got married.
They decided to meet in Athena’s temple. Medusa’s sisters help

her come into Athena’s
temple. Athena is the god of
wisdom and battle so she
was strict with rules. Athena
was also very jealous of
Medusa’s beauty. So she
cursed Medusa and her
sisters to become a
monster. The gorgons went
away to an island. One day Athena went to Perseus, who was the
son of Zeus and told him to kill Medusa because Athena was still
jealous of her. Perseus agreed and guided himself by her reflection
in a shield given to him by Athena, he beheaded Medusa as she
slept.

6

Fight between Medusa and Percy

In The Lightning Thief, Percy loses everything- his food, clothes,
and money, when they were attacked by the Furies on a bus in
which they were travelling, and it exploded. Then they entered a
snack bar. When Grover told them that he smelled monsters,
Percy and Annabeth ignored him. They met Aunt Em who turned
out to be Medusa. Once, Annabeth had told Percy that monsters
never die, they can be killed not dead, they always re-form. At the
time of their fight with Medusa, they realized that Medusa wanted
to kill Annabeth only because Annabeth was Athena’s daughter
and for Medusa, her enemy's daughter. They had a long fight and
finally, Percy cut off Medusa’s head and in anger, he sent the head
to Olympus. Then they took some food from there and left.

Riptide, Mrs.Dodds and the Minotaur

-Jinay Haria

What is Anaklusmos?

Anaklusmos is a celestial bronze sword. It's Ancient Greek for
‘reflection’. Celestial bronze is a material that is only deadly to
Gods, Demigods, Titans, Giants, and monsters. Riptide is the
cursed blade of the Great Prophecy. The Great Prophecy was a
prediction made by the Oracle of Delphi that foretold the rise or
fall of Olympus by a child of the Big Three.

Mr.Brunner, also known as Chiron, gave Percy the pen to defend
himself against Mrs. Dodds. Chiron, in Greek mythology, is one of
the Centaurs, the son of the Titan named Cronus who is also
known as Kronos, and Philyra, an Oceanid or sea nymph. Unlike
other Centaurs, who were violent and savage, he was famous for
his wisdom and knowledge of medicine.

Mrs Dodds, a pre-algebra teacher at Yancy Academy, disliked
Percy Jackson and it was later discovered that she was actually
one of the Furies and not really human at all. After the fight with

8

Mrs Dodds where he vaporised her, he gives it back to Mr.Brunner.
Later on, at the Half-Blood Camp, Chiron gives it to him as a
weapon.

Where does Percy first get Riptide?

In chapter 10 of The Lightning Thief, Chiron gives Percy the
ballpoint pen that transforms into a sword, named Riptide. The
sword cannot be lost. It cannot hurt any mortal, only monsters.
Percy is first given Riptide to defeat the Fury, Alecto, who was
disguised as Percy's pre-algebra teacher in his school, Mrs.Dodds.

Percy fight’s with Medusa

After Percy is attacked by Medusa who was disguised as Aunty Em
at the snack bar, he cuts off Medusa’s head with the help of
Riptide. After the fight Percy is confused as to why Medusa's head
didn't turn to dust like Mrs Dodds had when he had used Riptide
on her,and Annabeth explains to him that it is a spoil of war like his
Minotaur's Horn.

What is the Minotaur?
The Minotaur (real name Asterion) , is one of the most infamous
monsters in Greek mythology and is currently reforming in

9

Tartarus. Minotaur is a monster with 2 horns like a bull with the
body of a man.

Minotauros

(“Minos's Bull”), in

Greek mythology, is

a ferocious monster

of Crete . It was the

offspring of

Pasiphae. This huge,

horned monster

attacks Percy,

Grover, and Sally, Percy’s mother, as they try to get Percy safely to

Camp Half-Blood for the first time. The Minotaur nearly kills

Percy's mother, making Percy furious. Percy rips the Minotaur’s

horn off and kills him with it.

The Yankees Invisible Cap, Grover and
satyrs.

-Divya Bhansali

Yankees Invisible Cap -
The Yankees Invisible cap is a magical item that has the power
to make the person invisible. It was a gift from Annabeth’s
mother, Athena.
During a field trip to Olympus with some other campers
including Luke, Annabeth’s mother and goddess of wisdom
and war, Athena, gave it to her for her twelfth birthday. This is
the only gift that her mother has ever given her.

It cannot change its shape, and it does not make the wearer
intangible. It makes the user and the item they're holding

invisible. Unfortunately the
cap lost its magic in The
Mark of Athena (another
novel in the Percy Jackson
series) after Annabeth got in
an argument with Minerva,
her mother’s Roman form.

13

“Yes, my children will avenge me. They must destroy the
Romans, horrible, dishonorable, copycat Romans”, said
Athena. Juno is the Roman queen of gods and protector of
women. She is believed to watch over and guard the lives of
every woman from her birth to her death. Juno quarrelled
that they must keep the 2 groups separate. Athena said, “No,
let them brawl. Let my youngster destroy the despot.”
Annabeth uses the Yankees Invisibility Cap to fight alongside
Percy.

The Cap of Invisibility: a brief history
In Greek mythology, the cap of invisibility is a cap that
possesses the power to turn the wearer invisible.
Percy Jackson kept the cap and used it to eavesdrop on Atlas,
the Titan god who holds the sky aloft, and Luke. This incident
happened in The Titan Curses. “The Titan Curses” is another
novel in the Percy Jackson series.
The Cap of Invisibility is found by the Elder Cyclopes. The Elder
Cyclopes were 3, orb-eyed, immortal giants who forged the
lightning-bolts of Zeus. Zeus and Poseidon freed the Cyclops
from Tartarus after their mother told them that they would
need the help of the Cyclops to fight the Titans. He then used

14

this cap to great effect during the Titanomachy and was
instrumental in routing the Titans.

It is also known as the Cap of Hades or Helm of Hades.
Wearers of the cap in Greek myths include Athena, the
goddesses of wisdom, Hermes, the messenger god, and the
hero, Perseus. Hermes, wore the cap during the battle with
Hippolytos, the Giant, when the Giants waged war on Heaven.
The cap of invisibility enables the user to become invisible to
other supernatural entities, functioning much like the cloud
of mist that the gods surround themselves in to become
invisible.
Annabeth and her Cap
Annabeth uses the cap several times throughout the book.
Annabeth uses the cap to escape from Mount Saint Helens.

“The Battle of the
Labyrinth” is the fourth
book of Percy Jackson and
the Olympians. The story
is of Annabeth Chase as
she leads her friends in a
quest to find the inventor
of the infamous Labyrinth

15

when they discover its role in a dark plot against the camp by
Kronos’ army.

Grover
Grover was Percy’s best friend in the whole world. Grover has
stayed by Percy throughout sixth grade and kept watch over
him. Percy meets Grover at Yancy Academy and spends much
of his time protecting him. He was scrawny. He cried when he
got frustrated. He must have been held back several grades,
because he is the only 6th grader with acne and the start of a
wispy beard on his chin. Grover likes to eat his tin cans as a
snack. This is because Grover is actually a satyr.

What are satyrs?
In Greek mythology, a satyr is also known as a silenus or silenos.
It is a male nature spirit with ears and a tail resembling those of
a horse, Satyrs are nature spirits who combine male human
traits with the ears and tails of horses. They can detect
half-bloods and monsters by scent. They can control nature by
playing music on their reed pipes. They can talk to animals
and some monsters like Minotaurs, Medusa, Chimera, etc.
Satyrs worship the god, Pan. Pan is the god of the wild,
shepherds and flocks, rustic music, and companion of the

16

nymphs. Pan has the legs, horns and hindquarters of a goat,
in the same manner as a satyr.
