READING

Read the passage below about a news report of childhood malnutrition.

A news report shows that no country in Africa will meet goals set to end
childhood malnutrition by the year 2030. That target was set by the United
Nations in 2015 as a Sustainable Development Goal. The UN adopted a set of
goals, "to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all as
part of a new sustainable development agenda". The new report is published in the journal
Nature. It identifies poor child nutrition and low levels of education across 51 African countries.
These were key factors in countries battling to provide children with sufficient food. Researcher
Simon Hay said the goal of ending childhood malnutrition was always an "aspirational" target. He
said: "This aspiration is very, very far away."

There was some good news in the report. It highlighted the fact that many African nations,
including Ghana and Nigeria, have shown signs of improvement in childhood development since
the year 2000. However, it is a different story for countries like Chad, Central African Republic
and Eritrea. The report indicates that malnutrition remained "persistently high" in 14 countries
between Senegal in the west and Somalia in the east. Many of these countries have experienced
war, famine and mass migration, all of which have put massive strains on health and agriculture.
One researcher said considerable investment was needed in health and infrastructure in order to
address "serious inequalities".

READING

Read the text below.

Galileo Galilei (1564 - 1642) was an Italian astronomer and physicist. He was one of Galileo Galilei
the first people to challenge the theories of ancient philosophers and tested all his
ideas by experiment. He studied the science of motion and found out that weight of
an object does not affect how fast it falls. In 1609, Galileo invented the first
astronomical telescope, which he used to study the surface of the moon. He also
discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter.

Good-To-Know: The four biggest moons of Jupiter (Io, Europa, Ganymede, and
Callisto) are called the Galilean moons in his honor.

Isaac Newton Isaac Newton (1642 – 1727) was an English mathematician who studied at Cambridge
University. In 1665, he went home to Lincolnshire to escape the Plague, a deadly
disease that spread through Europe. Here he came up with some of his best ideas,
including working out how gravity works. He studied light in detail and discovered
how the colors of the rainbow are formed. He used his ideas to write a book, Principia
Mathematica, in which he proposed the Laws of Motion.

Good-To-Know: Legend has it that Newton was watching an apple fall in his orchard in
Lincolnshire when he worked out how gravity works.

Marie Curie (1867 – 1934) was a Polish physicist who worked on radioactivity. In
1819 she moved to Paris, France, to study physics, where she met her future
husband, Pierre. Marie studied the rays given off by the newly discovered element
uranium, which she named “radioactivity”. Working with Pierre, she discovered
two new radioactive elements, polonium and radium. Marie continued to work on
radioactivity after Pierre died in 1906. She pioneered the medical uses of
radioactivity, and trained nurses during World War I in radiography (using x-rays to
take images of the body). Sadly, her work had exposed her to a large amount of
radiation, which made her ill and she died in 1934 of cancer.

Marie Curie

Stephanie Kwolek Stephanie Kwolek (1923 – 2014) invented Kevlar. Kevlar is used as a material in more
than two hundred applications as a reinforcing agent, including tennis rackets, skis,
boats, airplanes, ropes, cables, tires, and bulletproof vests. It has been used for car
tires, fire fighter boots, hockey sticks, cut-resistant gloves, and even armored cars. It
has also been used to construct bomb proof building materials, hurricane safe rooms,
and reinforce overtaxed bridge spans.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, there is no denying that there are a lot of
advantages that we gained by working on this project. By
having this kind of textbook activities, it allows each of the
students to work at their own pace at the times that work
best for them and let them gain in depth understanding
about the topic.

Apart from that, by having this kind of techniques and
approaches, we are able to learn anywhere and anytime
wherever they are and revise easily thus providing the
students a different atmosphere in doing their exercises.
For instance, we had prepared a QR code in the textbook,
so it is easy for the students to access videos and any
information related to the exercises. Not only that, we
have also prepared audio for listening skill exercises and
videos in the exercise booklet, so the students are able to
understand the topic easily and clearly. In other words, you
are responsible and take charge of your own progress
through your learning process. The students can access
more information as quickly as lightning at the same time
the exercises provided are done according to the level of
difficulty where it allows the weaker students to follow
easily without getting lost.

With this aspect, the students will be attracted and be
more engaged with the learning materials. The free-
response nature allows students to learn from each other
and make those essential connections to deeper their
learning.
