CAN YOU BE AN Are leaders born or can you acquire the skills to become one? What are the skills you must cultivate to be a leader? Can you make others follow you? And most importanfly, can you be an effective leader? First of all, you must have a goal. you must have a clear picture of what you want to achieve. People don't like to follow a leader who has no direction. Once you have a goal, you must work hard to achieve it. Secondly, you should act like a leader. Leaders must look confident. your appearance, manners and speech are some of the things that make you look confident. Look smart and act smart. That, however, does not mean that you act'stuck-up'. you must be confident, yet polite, well-mannered yet humble. Speak clearly and don't mumble. This is important. You want people to understand you, right? Be competent! lf you want to be a leader, you must be knowledgeable. Knowledge is power. Everyone willlook up to you if you are clever and sure of your facts when you speak. lf you are sure of your facts, you can speak confidently and people will respect you. You have to be enthusiastic. Are you always pessimistic and grumbling about everything? A person who always looks on the dark side of things will soon have no followers. Who wants a pessimistic leader? You must enjoy what you are doing. More importanily, you must look enthusiastic, be optimistic when things go wrong and be pleasant at all times. EFFECTIVE LEADER ? You must trust others. Sometimes it is easy to imagine that only you can do the work well. Can you do everything on yourown? Certainly not!A leader, to be effective, must give others a chance to share the work. Don't be afraid that another person might take away your job if you share your work. Learn to delegate work to others. You should lead by example. lf you are irresponsible in your duties, can you blame it if your followers never do what they are supposed to do? lf you don't take things seriously, you cannot blame your followers if they play the fool. A good leader will show the way in whatever he or she does. And last but not least, always rernember to compliment your followers. Most of us are quick to condemn and criticize people when they do wrong. But when someone does something good, does he or she get a pat on the back? Most of us seldom compliment others. Learn to praise people - but don't flatter! You r followers wi ll soon find out whether you are sincere or not. These are just a few tips on how to be an effective leader. So you see, good leadership quality is not inborn but acquired. Each and every one of you has the.potential to be a good leader. You just have to give yourself a chance. And here I am - thanks to an English organisation called G.A.P. which arranges work placement abroad for students, the Malaysian Ministry of Education which intends to promote the use of English in school and the hospitality of the principal of SMS Muar. To some of you it may seem slighily mad - with years of hard studies behind me and years more ahead of me, I say l'm taking a break from it, yet l'm spending that break in a school. Why not visit Malaysia as a holiday? My answer is because you can only understand a country and its culture when you work and live in it. Besides, teaching here is totally different from England. From the students' school uniform to the food in canteen, it's all a new experience. Sure it's not always fabulous - this is a real life rather than just a holiday. Consequently at times I feel bored. I miss my family, my parents, my younger brother and sister, and the cat. Yet I'd like to emphasise that most of the time it's great. I love the weather, the food especially the tropicalfruits, and the people, who have been friendly and welcoming. ENHANCING..YOUR We have seen the reactions made by the 1995 SPM candidates when they received their results. There were those who jumped around happily and those who cried silenily. Which one would you prefer to be? Think about it. As we allknoq being a SMS student means stepping into a world that forces us to be well prepared for the big battle that is our SpM examination. There are so many facts, formulae and sub.iects that we need io learn. For the Form five students the D-Day is the 26th of November 1996. ls it possible for us to key in all the information related to ten subjects in our head? Here is some sound advice on how to enhance your learning power. Remembering is the most important tool for all exam candidates because we are not allowed to bring in any reference material into the examination hall. That means that we have to depend on our understanding of the subjects and our memory. Here comes the first tip. First, create a good mood towards studying. You must feel that the things you want to remember are important and interesting to you. Do not try to remember if you are sleepy or if you have a headache. Learning is minimal in such conditions. LEARNING POWER on your studies. Stop your habit of day dreaming, settle any emotional problems and relax your self if you want to remember better. As the proverb says, "To be great, concentrate!" You should try to study constanfly. lt is better to study about 30 minutes every day than to study 3 hours non-stop once a month. This is because daily repetitions are better than last minute preparations. You should also recite what you want to remember. Reciting creates a mental picture of the things you want to remember. For example, you can remember a history lesson by remembering it as a 'movie' in your mind. Last but not least, you must have confidence in yourself. A poor memory can be the result of telling oneself that his memory is poor. Change your attitude by repeating to yourself daily the words, i'l will remember, " I hope these tips can improve your confidence to be excellent students. Abah akan memakai baju tahun lepas yang pastinya akan dipakai pada tahun akan datang. Di tengah hari satu Syawal itu hujan. Abah amat susah hati kalau hujan. Di musim tengkujuh hampir tiap-tiap hari hujan lantas abah tidak dapat menoreh. Kalau menoreh pun sia-sia, susu yang bertakung di dalam cawan akan menjadi air, tiada getah buku dapat abah jual apatah lagi getah keping untuk abah tukarkan dengan wang. Kadangkadang abah turun ke laut menangkap ikan, laut bergelora sukar untuk diredah. Kadanglgdang abah pulang dengan tangan kosong. Maka malam itu mereka akan makan hanya berlaukkan garam. Waktu itu abah masih tenang, menghadap Tuhan dan bersyukur di atas dugaan-Nya. Walaupun abah hidup dalam kesempitan dengan keluarganya, abah tidak bersungut dengan deritanya. Dengan tulang empat kerat, abah bermandikan peluh, dengan colok di atas kepala, abah menyuluh batang-batang getah apabila fajar mula menjelma, abah mengayuh pulang ke rumah membersihkan diridan solat Subuh. Dengan basikal tuanya, Shuqin duduk di depan sementara Ani di belakang. Abah mengayuh basikalnya menghantar mereka ke sekolah. Shuqin cium tangan abah, Ani pun sama dan abah merestui mereka. Abah soroti langkah anaknya, berpimpinan tangan ke kawasan sekolah dan abah bertekad didalam hatinya mereka tidak akan mengalami nasib yang sama sepertinya. After a short (too short!) nap, we had to go to our preparation room to (what else?) prepare ourselves for the next day:s debate. The topic for the preliminary round of the English debate was "Privatisation of medical centres lead to better health care". As the text for the debate was ready, all we had to do was memorize it. That night was the only night where we got to sleep early. 26 May 1996 After breakfast, we headed straight to our prep room. We (the English debate team) were extremely nervous as this debate was going to be the first real debate for each of us. We were going up against SEMSAS at 10 am. Before going for the debate, we received good news - the BM debate team won! That gave us some hope and encouragement and we were determined to do our best. Surprise, surprise! Just before the debate started, two members of the Science Muar team met their long-lost friends, two debaters from the SEMSAS team. Nur Azlina met an old school friend, while Rozwin met a senior from her old school. lt affected a bit of their confidence, as they were going against their own friends, but they decided to do their best anyway for the school. We proposed the motion and all our hard work paid off when we were declared the winner. By the end of the debate, the BM debating team had joined us and we retired to the prep room, waiting for the draw. After waiting for some time, Pn. SitiZubaidah came to the prep room with the results of the draw. The motion for the next debate was "Modernization leads to the disintegration of the family unit". Again, we proposed the motion, and we were going up against SMS Johor. So .... back to work! The opening ceremony of the Pesta piala Perdana Menteriwas held in the afternoon. The sweltering hot weather made us sweat profusely. Seven of us, together with 4 teachers made up the school's contingent during the march-past. Dato' Sri Najib Tun Razak officiated the opening ceremony. We got to see quite a number of schools perform during the ceremony, but the one that got our attention and admiration was the performance by the Sek. Tun Fatimah band. Man, were they something! The rest of the SMS Muar contingent went to the prep room to prepare the text for the next debate. That night, there was a formal dinner for the participants, sponsored by RENONG. The girls came dressed in baju kurung while the boys were attired in batik (outing clothes, of course!). The food was delicious, but we had to hurry as our work was waiting for us. 27 Mav 1996 The BM debate was first. While the English team were nervously practising their lines, the news came ..... "Kita kalah dengan SESMA". That piece of news made us even more nervous, but we were determined not to let the school down. When our turn came, we put up a brave front and went into batfle. By 5 pm, we were too tired to continue our work and decided to take a break. We were envious of the other schools, since they had time to go sightseeing around Kuala Kangsar. We decided to have dinner by the river and shop around for some souvenirs before resuming our work. Atl through the night, we wrote and memorized our scripts. We could barely open our eyes, we were so sleepy. We walked back to the dorms at 4.30 am, walking like zombies. We were so eager to go to bed that we didn't even need escorts. 30 May 1996 It was THE day! We could barely believe that we had managed to reach the semifinals, for nobody had ever imagined that we would go this far. To us, this was a great achievement, well beyond our expectations. We dared not imagine that we would triumph over RMC, but we were willing to do our very best. Alas! lt was not to be. We lost to RMC, an obviously better team. Despite our efforts, all our arguments were to no avail. RMC's debaters were in a class by themselves, and we had to admit defeat. AzrilAkmar of RMC was announced as the best speaker. During the closing ceremony held right after the semifinal debates ended, the names of the finalists for both the BM and English debates were announced. All 4 schools received a small token of appreciation for reaching the finals. The semifinalists were not forgotten. We, too, received tokens of appreciation. All participants received a certificate of participation. After the ceremony ended, we packed our bags and finally left for home. It was a wonderful experience for all of us. We met old friends, made new ones and generally enjoyed ourselves during our stay there. lt would be a long time before any of the participants forget their week-long stay at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar. Bayang Sains Pokok Sena masih belum kelihatan. Perut dah mula menyanyikan lagu rasmi. Oleh itu, kami berhenti makan dekat Sintok. Dah puas makan, baru bertolak. l-ebih kurang sejam perjalanan, baru sampai. Besar sekolah tu. Dari pintu pagar nak ke asrama boleh pengsan kalau berjalan. Ketibaan kami di sambut oleh pengawas-pengawas sekolah itu dan Encik Hasnan (Penolong Kanan) kemudian makan malam sekali lagi. Malangnya semua dah kenyang. Untuk mencukupkan syarat, makan juga la sikit. Kemudian masuk dorm masing-masing dengan tilam dan bantal masih berbalut dan ada kipas lagi. 20 Mei 1996 Hari terakhir lawatan, Sains Muar dah melambailambai suruh balik. Mintak maaf ye, kami nak ke Bukit Kayu Hitam dulu. Perjalanan ke Bukit Kayu Hitam hanya mengambil masa satu jam. Tiba di sana, apalagi nak buat kalau tak shopping. Semuanya diborong. Nasib baik tak masuk Siam, kalau tak, boleh lagi berkampit-kampit dibimbitnya. Lebih kurang satu jam di sana, kami bertolak pulang. Sekarang baru boleh sambut lambaian Sains Muar. Dari utara iaitu di permulaan Lebuh Raya Utara-Selatan, kami menuju ke bumi Sains Muar yang tercinta. Biasalah kalau perjalanan dah jauh macam ni, laungan LAPAR jangan cerita la...Jelas kedengaran. Dan sepanjang perjalanan balik ini juga merupakan sessi menghabiskan filem. Pantang mata pejam ada saja flash yang menyala. Dalam perjalanan, kami berhentidi kawasan Rehat dan Rawat Gunung Semanggol dan Seremban. Yelah, perut meraung mintak diisi. Lebih kurang 11.00 malam, kontijen kami tiba semula di bumi tercinta, Sains Muar. Yang tak sanggupnya bila turun je bas, "Woi...Korang balik apasal. Air takde...! " Sabar jeiah.
