Matlamat Kementerian Pendidikan adalah untuk memperbangunkan sistem pendidikan berkualitiyang bertaraf dunia bagi memperkembangkan potensi individu sepenuhnya dan memenuhi aspirasi negara. [/atlamat ini tidak pernah berubah sejak mula dicanangkan, malah pendekatan dan metodologinya sering diperkemaskan supaya lebih mudah dicapai. Cabaran utama dalam sistem pendidikan kita ialah menentukan kualiti pend id ikan d i semua peri ng kat terus d apat d ipertingkatkan. Oleh itu, pemikiran-pemikiran yang strategik akan menyebabkan cabaran tersebut bertukar menjadi peluang, iaitu peluang untuk mempertingkatkan kecemerlangan pendidikan. Dalam suasana yang semakin mencabar ini, semua Sekolah Berasrama Penuh (SBP) perlu melihat kembalitugas utama atau'core business'yang perlu diperlaksanakan, iaitu mencapai kecemerlangan dalam semua aspek pendidikan. Warga SBP perlu menjalankan tugas dengan penuh komitmen dan beriltizam, menggunakan seluruh potensi bagi mencapai kecemerlangan pendidikan. Saya berdoa agar semua SBP dapat terus bergandingan bahu dan melangkah sederap dalam mengharungi cabaran-cabaran baru dalam dunia pendidikan. Seramai 32 orang pengawas menerima watikah pelantikan secara rasmipada 11 Januari 1999. Pelantikan AJKTertinggipula diadakan pada 11 Februari 1999. Para pengawas seterusnya mengikuti Kursus Kepemimpinana Pengawas pada g hingga 11 April 1999 di Hutan Rekreaksi Ayer Keroh, tMelaka untuk meningkatkan kredibiliti dan semangat berpasukan di samping merapatkan silatur rahim sesama pengawas. Lembaga Pengawas berusaha membantu pihak sekolah untuk mengatasi masalah disiplin di kalangan pelajar sama ada di asrama mahu pun di sekolah di samping membantu dalam melicinkan pentadbiran sekolah. Secara keseluruhannya, Lembaga Pengawas telah berjaya mempertingkatkan kualiti disiplin pelajar dengan sokongan padu pihak sekolah demi mewujudkan pelajar Sekolah Menengah Sains lVuar yang cemerlang dari segi sahsiah dan akademik. Sepanjang tahun 1999, Lembaga Pengawas telah menjalankan beberapa aktiviti. Aktiviil-aktiviti berkenaan ialah. Mereka merupakan 421orang pelajar di bawah tajaan Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam untuk mengikuti Kursus Persediaan Bahasa lnggeris (TOEFL) sebelum melanjutkan pelajaran ke luar negera. Kumpulan ketiga merupakan 175 orang pelajar Tingkatan lVyang mendaftarkan diri pada 1 September 1983. Sekolah ini terus berkembang dan menerima pelajar Tingkatan I dan Tingkatan lV. Mulaitahun 1988, sekolah ini hanya menerima kemasukan pelajarTingkatan lV. lni bermakna pada tahun 1990 sekolah inihanya mempunyaipelajar-pelajarTingkatan lV dan f-ingkatan Vsahaja. Pada 30 Jun 1991, sekolah ini menempah sejarah dengan pengambilan seramai 52 pelajar Tingkatan Vl Rendah bagi persediaan ke jurusan undang-undang Universiti lslam Antarabangsa. Pada tahun 1995, pengambilan pelajar Tingkatan Vl di sekolah ini telah ditamatkan dan digantikan dengan Program Matrikulasi Universiti Malaysia Sabah dan kini pelajar-pelajarSMS Muarterdiridaripada Tingkatan lV V dan Program Matrikulasi sahaja yang berjumlah 663 orang. Mulai tahun 1999 SMS Muar telah dipilih oleh Kementerian Pendidikan untuk melaksanakan Program Sekolah Bestari 2.0 KELUARGASMS MUAR Sekolah ini mempunyai seramai68 orang guru iaitu 67 guru siswazah dan seorang guru bukan siswazah. Bilangan kakitangan bukan guru ialah 5B orang. Perbandingan pencapaian peperiksaan SPM bagi jangka masa 1988 - 1998 mengikut pangkat adalah seperti dalam jadual VI. Prestasi peperiksaan SPM dari segi peratusan calon yang lulus lulus adalah tidak berubah iaitu 100% lulus berbanding dengan pencapaian tahun 1997 dan tahun 1998. Waiau bagaimanapun dari segi pencapaian gred I pada tahun ini adalah menurun jika dibandingkan dengan prestasi tahun sebelumnya, tetapi masih pada tahap melebihi 97%. Panitia Mata Pelajaran pula telah mengambil langkah-langkah berikut dalam usaha mencapai kecemerlangan: a. Mengadakan kelas tambahan untuk mata pelajaran tertentu bagi menghabiskan sukatan pelajaran. b. f\Ierancang dan melaksanakan kelas pengayaan bagi pelajar-pelajar yang cemerlang. c. ,Merancang dan melaksanakan kelas pengukuhan bagi pelajar-pelajaryang sederhana. d. Peperiksaan Khas - guru-guru menggunakan soalan-soalan SBP yang lain untuk dibincangkan di dalam kelas setelah pelajar cuba menjawab mengikut masa yang ditetapkan. h. When it comes to examinations, I worry a great deal too. I worry about little things like how many pens I should take into the examination hall, what sort of chair I will be sitting on, my identity card and my sharpener. I always worry that all my pens might run dry or my identity card would go missing, but my worries are only for nothing. No great calamity has ever befallen me in the examination hall. But, l'm still worried. When I see my friends fretting about outside the hall, I readily offer them advice. I am able to console and calm them down quite effectively, but as for myself, I go on worrying that I might not do well in the examination. I cannot follow my own advice. I do not know what my problem is. Probably I do not have enough confidence. The first time I had to sit for an oral examination, I was all tensed up a day before the actual examination. Understandably my friends were also worried about how they would fare in front of the examiners. They were planning strategies and techniques. I acted nonchalantly, as though I was confident about the whole matter. I even gave them some important hints and told them to quit worrying. They were thankful for my suggestions. and I supposed that I had given them an impression of calm and steadiness. But inside me I knew better that my mind was in turmoil. I could not sleep well the whole night. My dreams were filled with monstrous examiners and the fear of failing the examination. Again my worries were for nothing: Everything went smoothly and I sailed through the whole thing without a hitch. t began to wonder about the folly of worrying and the wastage of time and energy brooding over it. I told myself not to worry anymore, that it was not beneficial in anyway. lt took me great effort but I managed to do it anyway. So, think about it. lt's easy to tell others not to worry, but not so easy to follow such advice yourself. lt's truly easier said than done. CHANGE A PROBLEM TO A CHALLENGE Hurairah Muhamad We are constantly facing problems. The world is full of them. Nobody wants problems but yet problems just managed to creep up on us. So, what is actually a problem? Well problems are situations which make us worried and confused and they make our lives miserable. As students we too face numerous problems. We have to follow a tight schedule set by the school. There are various lessons like Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and History to cope with in school. ln addition, there are also problems at the hostel and not forgetting our own personal preblems. Would we feel glad if we could get rid of all these problems? However, it is just not that easy and that is why problem-solving skills are important. Some people think of problems as a burden but some think of them as a golden opportunity or take them as a challenge. Therefore, try to be more creative when solving a problem as being creativity helps us to overcome our fear when facing a problem. Here are some reasons why some people could not solve their problems effectively. Sometimes when we face a problem that seems too big to handle, we just give up on it and do nothing. When a problem seems complicated indeed, we just turn away and try not to think about it. Some of us become defensive and blame others for our problems. But the point is, will all the problems be solved? Well, for every problem there is a solution or ways that can help us to overcome them. Here are a few tips on how to be more creative when solving a problem. Firstly, do not immediately use the first solution that strikes your mind because it might not be the best choice or alternative. Keep looking for other ways and choose the best out of these. Try to find out what other people would do if they had the same problem as you. Remember try to focus on the problem for a while as it is easier to come out with an idea after you have been thinking about it for a while. Don't be defensive towards a problem by thinking about the consequences of will happen if you fail to solve the problem as this will only decrease your capability to solve a problem. And lastly try to be aware of the problems around you. lf you know there are problems around you, it's only then you would strive to resolve them. Actually, problems are good for us because they could increase our self-esteem and our mental capabilities. We should be glad that there are problems around us. lmagine if there were no problems. People would not have a lot of work to do. There would not be so many inventions like we have today. We would not have many things to spend our time on. Then, life 47
