The Mango Tree Author: Kanchan Bannerjee Illustrator: Kavya Singh Re-level: Lea Shaver
My family lives in a big city. My grandma lives in a small village. I like to go to her village. I like to play with the girls and boys. I am always happy to see my grandma! She is always happy to see me. She makes special foods for me. She sits with me and braids my hair. We love each other very much. When I am with her, I never want to leave! 2/7
Grandma's house has a big mango tree. I love to climb so high in this tree. It is tall and wide, with big green leaves. You cannot count all the mangos up there! Grandma's mangos taste so sweet. I want to eat 100 mangos! 3/7
Now it is time to go back to the city. I do not want to leave Grandma's house! I hide in the tree so no one can see me. I do not want my parents to take me away. I want to stay longer with my grandma. My parents can take the baby home! 4/7
My father looks for me left and right. My mother looks for me too. But they cannot find me. They do not look for me in the tree. They think only boys can climb trees. They will never find me up here! 5/7
Oh no! Who is this? Grandma's dog sees me in the tree! Go away, dog! Go away! The dog tells my secret. They see me. 6/7
Now I have to climb down. Grandma gives me a big hug. I tell her that I am sad to leave. She says that I will come again. And she is proud I can climb so high. I say, "Next time I will eat 100 mangos!" 7/7
