School News By Jack Wave That Flag: Meet this Year’s Flag Team

Many things have happened in our school since
we’ve started back; One is the formation of the
new flag team. Flag team is a group of students
that come to school every morning and after-
noon to raise, and take down the flag. Some ma-
jor changes have been applied to the new flag
team. In the past, the team has been male with a
background in Boy Scouts, but now things have
changed. 6th graders, Lily Close, and Kate Caine
have volunteered to be in this group. The other
members of this group are Smith Cole, Harper
Zanaty, Wilson Patrick, Harris Burson, Mac Hol-
ley, Andrew Murphree, and Reed Warburton.
Warburton told Parchment staff that, “I think it’s
great that girls are getting these opportunities.”

Ms. Know-It-All is a section in the
newspaper where students can get

your question may get answered!

92.3 The Fan - Radio.com The Browns: From Worst to First?

In this issue of the Parchment, I will discuss one of the NFL’s most in-
teresting teams, the Cleveland Browns. In the months of March and
April, the Cleveland Browns made some interesting moves. Through
trades and the draft, they acquired Jarvis Landry, Tyrod Taylor, Baker
Mayfield, and Denzel Ward. The most interesting and polarizing figure
on this list is #1 overall pick Baker Mayfield. Mayfield is a rookie out of
Oklahoma and is probably the most intriguing prospect ever. Mayfield is
only 6’ 1’’. Because of this, scouts considered him too small. Cleveland
was able to get all these stars because of all the draft picks they collect-
ed over the past three years. Even though it seems like a flawless plan,
there are also negatives. Last year the Browns traded one of their first
round picks to the Texans, who later would use that pick to select Des-
haun Watson. Also, the Browns combined record from 2007 to 2017 is a
mere 48-112. Currently the Browns are 1-1-1 (1 loss, 1 tie). Could the
Browns make the playoffs? My prediction is that the browns will finish
the season 10-5-1, but with all that star power anything is possible. Last
week, in Baker Mayfield’s NFL debut, he erased a 14-0 deficit. Still, the
question remains: Will the Browns go from worst to first?

On September 20, 2017, Ahbi the restaurant opened in Birmingham. Everyone went to try it in a rush, but since then it
has become less popular with the kids. I went there recently to try it out myself, and honestly, I thought I would not
like it at all. It seemed a little fancy to me, because I normally stick to Urban Cookhouse and Chen Express; both of
which are amazing restaurants that you should definitely check out, however, they are not what I came to talk about
today. I did not expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised when I found I really liked it. Abhi is a modern Japanese
steakhouse/sushi restaurant.

When I arrived, they sat me and my family down and brought us water. We ordered momos (basically dumplings) and
edamame (green peas). They were delicious, and my brother and I immediately begged my parents for more. They,
unfortunately, declined. I ordered steak skewers while my brother and dad ordered lamb, and my mom got a sal-
ad. The service was great. We got our food quickly, and it was delicious. My steak skewers were awesome, and my
family loved their food. We paid our check soon after and left. I definitely recommend eating at Ahbi. It was really
good.

Let’s welcome Miss Rettig to MBE! Miss Rettig
has recently graduated from UAB. She attended for
both Grad and Undergrad school. This is her first year
teaching.
Q: What is your favorite part about teaching at MBE?
A: I love getting to know the students and seeing them make art
and explore with me in art class. So much fun!

A: I love to hang out with my friends and eat good food. I make
my own art in my freetime and I also work at my church.

A: Oh, that’s impossible to answer!

A: I had some of the greatest art teachers out there while at
UAB. They completely changed my whole world. They inspired
me to want to teach art!
Q: If you were not an art teacher, what would you be?
A: I probably would have gone to work for a Graphic Design firm.
Q: If you could be anywhere else right now, where would you
be?
A: I love to travel! So right this second? I wish I could be on the
beach.
Q: Do you have any pets?
A: I have a miniature dachshund named Burlee. She’s the best!
Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
A: Hmmmm…. I really do think I would love to fly. Especially to
avoid driving in traffic.
Q: What is the goal that you want to accomplish by the end of the
year?
A: I would love to know every student by name! Naming is im-
portant. There’s so many of you, but I’m definitely working on it!
