Mission: Burning tech into the minds of everyone

Nithin Kamath is the Founder and Chief Executive
Officer of Zerodha. He began trading stocks when he
was introduced to the markets by his friends at just
17. He started trading in penny stocks. He had
accumulated quite a bit of money by the time he
finished his engineering degree from the Bangalore
Institute of Technology.

He then lost it all - Rs 5 lakh - between 2001 and
2002 when the markets crashed. Undeterred, he
began working at a call centre during the night while
he traded stocks in the day to build up his trading
capital. This went on for a couple of years until he
met an American HNI who gave him a cheque and
asked Nithin to manage his money. Eventually, he
started his brokerage Kamath & Associates and
became a sub-broker for Reliance Money in 2006.
In one of the biggest gamble of his life, Nithin started
Zerodha in the middle of a trading lull in 2010.

Today, Zerodha is the largest retail brokerage firm in
India by all measures, and one of the largest retail
trading platforms in the world by activity. We have
achieved this without ever advertising, or raising any
external capital or debt. We focused on innovative
products and services, and it took us a slow and
steady 10 years along with a lot of luck.
After the success of Zerodha, and more recently, the media bestowing on us glamourised labels
like “unicorn” and “billionaires”, I felt I should share my personal perspective on business and
life, and what success really means to me, beyond the labels. If nothing else, I want to tell
people that it is possible to be successful at business by questioning the true cost of revenue,
valuations, and growth, instead of continuously chasing them. And that success is relative,
impermanent, and a lot of luck too.

SRI LANKA CRISIS

.Sri Lanka is an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of the Indian
subcontinent. It comprises an area of about 25,000 square miles (slightly larger than
West Virginia), and its main sources of income from exports are textiles, garments, and
tea leaves.Protests started in the capital, Colombo, in April and spread across the
country.People have been struggling with daily power cuts and shortages of basics such
as fuel, food and medicines.Inflation is running at more than 50%.The country doesn't
have enough fuel for essential services like buses, trains and medical vehicles, and
officials say it doesn't have enough foreign currency to import more. This lack of fuel has
caused petrol and diesel prices to rise dramatically. In late June, the government banned
the sale of petrol and diesel for non-essential vehicles for two weeks. Sales of fuel remain
severely restricted.Schools have closed, and people have been asked to work from home
to help conserve supplies.

What led to the economic crisis?

The government blamed the Covid pandemic, which badly affected Sri Lanka's tourist
trade - one of its biggest foreign currency earners. It also says tourists were frightened off
by a series of deadly bomb attacks in 2019.However, many experts blame President
Rajapaksa's poor economic mismanagement.Sri Lanka now imports $3bn (£2.3bn) more
than it exports every year, and that is why it has run out of foreign currency. At the end of
2019, Sri Lanka had $7.6bn (£5.8bn) in foreign currency reserves, which have dropped to
around $250m (£210m).When Sri Lanka's foreign currency shortages became a serious
problem in early 2021, the government tried to limit them by banning imports of chemical
fertiliser. The state-run Census and Statistics Department said that agriculture sector
shrank 8.7% in the third quarter and industries 21.2%, while services dropped 2.6%, from
a year earlier.

Time-restricted eating can reshape gene expression: Research

Intermittent fasting has become a hot topic in the wellness industry as numerous laboratory studies have shown the health
benefits of time-restricted eating, including increased life span.
Now, Salk scientists show in mice how time-restricted eating influences gene expression across more than 22 regions of the
body and brain. For the study, two groups of mice were fed the same high-calorie diet. One group was given free access to
food. The other group was restricted to eating within a feeding window of nine hours each day.
After seven weeks, tissue samples were collected from 22 organ groups and the brain at different times of the day or night
and analysed for genetic changes. The authors found that 70 per cent of mouse genes respond to time-restricted eating.

Supreme Court validates the right of cinema halls to regulate outside food
accompaniment

Supreme Court of India has stated that cinema hall owners are entitled to set their own terms and conditions for the sale of food
inside theatres. The court was hearing a batch of appeals that theatre owners and the Multiplex Association of India had filed. They
challenged a 2018 verdict of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, which ruled that multiplexes and theatres cannot prevent the
audience from carrying their own food and beverages inside the movie halls.
The court also said that a moviegoer has the choice to not consume the food and beverages served inside theatres. “A cinema hall is
the private property of the owner of such hall and he is entitled to put such terms and conditions as he deems fit provided the same

are not contrary to public interest or safety,” it said. READ MORE

Twitter handle and mentioned that being a shark does not mean they cannot have their independent values. She added

that she has ‘no regrets’ in not accepting Vineeta’s competitor brand’s pitch. READ MORE
