building more
than houses

2016 Annual Report

Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County

h a b i t at (Habitat CFC) is a nonprofit organization that builds
communities and improves lives by eliminating sub-
standard housing and creating affordable home-ownership

i s . . . possibilities for families in Fairfield County. Habitat CFC
has a well-earned reputation for success in transforming
abandoned properties into homes for tax paying,
contributing community members throughout the region.
Since 1985, Habitat CFC has built over 200 homes helping
over 1,000 family members in Fairfield County.

We are proud to be:

a construction company

with a “green” focus. All 64 Habitat homes built
since 2010 have been Energy Star rated, saving
Habitat homeowners 35-40% on their utility bills;

a family services agency

that, for the past 32 years, has been providing
support and education as well as helping families
purchase their homes and become advocates for
their neighborhoods;

a nonprofit financial institution

that sells homes below cost with no down payment
and 0% interest mortgages to hardworking families
in Fairfield County;

a community service provider

for over 7,000 individuals in families, corporate
groups and organizations who volunteer throughout
the year to help build Habitat CFC homes.

from the CEO

I am proud to present Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County’s 2016 Annual Report – a synopsis of twelve
months of notable challenges and gratifying accomplishments. When you consider a whole year of new homes and
homeowners . . . a year engaging thousands of volunteers . . . a year made possible due to outstanding generosity and
strong partnerships – it is clear that there will never be enough space in one report to share all of the extraordinary
stories we have to tell.
As you make your way through this document, we hope you will realize the depth and breadth of our work. The iconic
picture of Habitat volunteers working on a home site is certainly accurate, but the fact is that Habitat CFC builds more
than houses. We build hope and stability. We build neighborhoods and communities. Most importantly, we help
individuals and families build their own bright futures.
The previous page highlights some of the words that can be used to describe Habitat CFC, but there is a simpler way to
define us. We are an entity that exists entirely due to the dedication of those who believe that every person deserves a
decent, stable, affordable place to call home. Throughout this report are stories about some of the remarkable people
who act selflessly, every single day, driven by this belief. They are the inspiration behind all that we build - and we
couldn’t be more grateful.

kimberly and jeymar soto

couldn’t let their four children, Alex, Jeymar, Jeydalise and Lando,
play outside in their old neighborhood because they had no back-
yard, and the crime on their block made it impossible for them to
stay safe in front of their apartment building. Poor insulation in
their apartment made heating rooms in the winter very expensive,
and their kitchen was so small that they couldn’t fit everyone at the
table for meals.
Fortunately, the Sotos applied for and were accepted into the
Habitat CFC program in December 2013 and got to work
building their affordable new home in Bridgeport with the
support of generous groups and corporations like United
Methodist Church of New Canaan and JP Morgan Chase & Co.
In 2016, the Soto family was able to purchase their new home
with no down payment and a zero interest mortgage. They can
now have family meals at one table, BBQ and play outside in their
fenced-in backyard and enjoy making memories together.

“In the 31 years I’ve been volunteering at Habitat CFC, I’ve met
so many wonderful people of all ages and backgrounds who are
committed to working together to improve our community as well

We couldn’t be more grateful for all the hard work and dedica-

women build is a Habitat program that

challenges women of all walks of life to address the issue of sub-
standard housing. Women are encouraged to get involved by taking
the lead on construction of new Habitat CFC homes and helping
more women become homeowners. The Women Build committee
hosts events every year to raise funds for the houses that the group
sponsors and helps build.
In 2016, Women Build held their first annual She Nailed It! Social
and Competition where teams of four raised money and competed
for the Bedazzled Hammer prize in a ladies-only nail hammering
relay while friends and family cheered them on. That event, as well
as Women Build’s annual Aitoro Gourmet Tasting event, helped
provide funding for the 12th Women Build-sponsored home which
was purchased by Rosanna Dotel and her family (left, middle). It
was dedicated in honor of long-time Women Build volunteer
Beverly Eckert.

building Habitat CFC is successful in large part due to the
futures generous funding from and partnerships with

many individuals, corporations and foundations
working hard to improve Fairfield County.

GE corporation has sponsored 30 Habitat

CFC homes and helped build over 70 more over the past 30 years
through their annual GE Blitz, an event that engages hundreds of
GE employees working alongside our future homeowners. GE has
also been a generous supporter of countless other Habitat efforts,
so when they announced their plans to leave the area, we were
certainly concerned. Funds are always a worry, but we also fretted
the loss of dozens of GE friends that we had made over the years
- people who had become members of the Habitat family that are
committed to our organization and made a meaningful and most
appreciated difference.
A year later, we are thrilled that GE has maintained its
relationship with and commitment to Habitat CFC. Some good
friends have left the area, but those who are still here continue to
volunteer and engage in our important work. We are planning a
GE Blitz for the fall of 2017, and we are confident that it will be
as effective as ever before!

ReStore can help with that.

ReStore is a division of Habitat CFC that accepts

donations of new or nearly new building supplies, furniture and
appliances from individuals, contractors and businesses. Some of
these materials are used to build Habitat homes, while most are sold
to the public at the Habitat ReStore. All proceeds from the ReStore
benefit Habitat CFC and its mission.
ReStore customers save 30-90% off retail prices on home improve-
ment materials, furniture and appliances; ReStore donors help
improve our community while potentially receiving a tax deduction;
and whether you buy or donate, you are reducing the amount of
usable merchandise and building materials going to a landfill.
In 2016 alone, ReStore had over 3,200 drop-off donations, and
employees made over 3,500 donation pick-ups which, together,
added up to nearly 2 million pounds of materials and merchandise!
