>To observer important chemical safety requirement in CHES's laboratories.

Prepared by: [email protected]

• To observe important chemical safety requirements in laboratories. • To promoting awareness on chemical safety. • To comply with rules and regulations of legal requirements.

• Safety, health and environmental protection are the responsibility of ALL – ie staffs, students, lecturers, and other parties that are working in laboratory. • First victim = user @ worker • Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 : “It shall be the duty of every employee while at work, to take reasonable care for the safety and health of himself and of other persons who may be affected by his acts or omissions at work”

During emergency: • Stop all activities. • Proceed to the exit door. • Walk quickly, properly, don’t delay. • Follow the instruction of the Floor Marshal. • Assemble at the Assembly Area 5. • Report missing and injury. • Listen to the announcement. • Disperse when permitted.

ABC Type: CO2 Type : • Suitable for all types of fires; paper, wood, plastic, etc.. • Material: dry powder • Normal weight 9.0kg • Fire extinguisher type CO2 • Suitable to electrical equipments • Material: CO2 • Normal weight 2.0kg

Don’t panic! Call 999! • Alert people to leave the scene. • Retreat to evacuation area. • Stop people from going near the scene. Respond to the call receivers. • Provide correct details. • Call relevant parties, ie OSeM, IIUMSC, Daya Bersih, PIC, etc..

Don’t use lift! Proceed to exit door! Use stairs!

Working beyond office hour : ⚬ PG students are ALLOWED with permission. ⚬ Students MUST fill in Lab Booking Form. ⚬ Students are not allowed to work alone. Must be with partners. ⚬ PIC MUST be available during working period. ⚬ No outsiders are allowed. ⚬ Report any accidents/near misses ⚬ Check all rooms, switch off light and lock the door before leaving.

• Record usage of lab in Log Book of Lab Usage. • Use safety spec, gloves and holder when transferring @ pouring chemicals. • No food and drinks allowed in laboratories. • Proper PPE (e.g. lab coat, covered shoes, goggles, gloves, facemasks, etc) must be worn. • Use trolley/ tray/ carrier when transporting glassware, chemical bottles, apparatus. • Read Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before handling hazardous chemicals. • Use fumecupboard when transferring @ mixing hazardous chemicals. • Use Laminar Flow/ Biosafety Cabinet when handling dangerous bacteria, microorganism etc..

⚬ Fire. ⚬ Explosion. ⚬ Hazardous Gas Leakage. ⚬ Chemical Spillage/ Splash. ⚬ Mercury Leakage. ⚬ Hands injury.

Incidents Responses Clothing on Fire Roll the person on the floor, or douse with water, or cover his body with wet cloth/blanket. Call IIUM clinic and PIC immediately! Chemical spill on body -Flood area for 15-20 minutes. Use emergency shower instead of water tap. -Remove clothing. -Call IIUM clinic and PIC immediately! Chemicals enter eyes -Wash eyes with water for 15-20 minutes. Use emergency eyewash instead of water tap. -Call IIUM clinic and PIC immediately! Ingestion of chemicals -Drink plenty of water. -Call IIUM clinic and PIC immediately! -Quickly send the victim to the nearest clinic. Non-hazardous gas leakage -Shut off leakage source, open window and door for ventilation. - Evacuate the room.

Incidents Response Small Fires -Use fire extinguisher. Put off the fire. - If fail, evacuate and call 999. Chemical Spillage •Wear PPE and dilute/neutralize if chemicals are highly concentrated. • Use Chemical Spillage kit to contain & dispose waste chemical. Minor Biohazards Spill -Use PPE, pour the decontaminant/sorbent/ disinfectant. -Autoclave and dispose as biohazard waste. Radiation Exposure -Switch off the equipment. -Identify and isolate affected person. -Refer the affected person to the clinic immediately. Mercury Spillage (minor) - Open all windows for ventilation. - Evacuate room immediately. - Pour mercury beads with Sulphur powder. - Scoop mercury beads using proper tools, and put into hazard plastic bag, seal & label, put in the waste area.

•Before handling the chemicals, read the SDS and understand the hazard nature of the chemicals. • SDS contains information on chemical identification, composition and physical properties along with health, physical, environmental hazards, disposal consideration and many more.

Beware of broken glassware! Don't wash them! USE NITRILE GLOVES TO WASH GLASSWARE!

• Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) – nitrile gloves, goggles, lab coat. • Use fume cupboard to control exposure to hazardous fumes. • All containers must be labeled with chemical name, concentration and hazardous warning. • Write your name, ID number, date and telephone number for easy identification of the owner. • Put the bottles inside the containing trays (highly recommended). Tight the lid/cap properly. • Don’t store chemicals under the fume cupboard or on the floor.

• All copy of keys for storage location (eg : cupboard, cabinets, drawers, workbench and lockers) MUST BE SURRENDERED to the PIC of the lab. • Masterlist of chemicals pasted outside the cabinet. This is to avoid: • Abandoned storage area that are still locked. • The lab facilities not fully utilized, ie prevent the next users from using the storage area. • High risks of accidents of leaking & breaking. No knowledge of what is inside the storage area.

• Separate from other clothes. • Add disinfectant into the washing. • if possible use hot water. • Run the machine empty with bleach on hot to disinfect and clean the washing machine of any residual contaminants. *Discard lab coats if it has major chemical spills with corrosive, toxic, carcinogenic or strong acids. It should not be washed at all!

• Biohazards are infectious agent or biologically derives infectious materials that will post risk to human health. Control Measures: • Wearing PPE such gloves, facemask, lab coat • Handling biohazards material should be under biosafety cabinets or laminar flow. • After working, the working area, glassware & apparatus should be cleaned/ disinfected/ sterilized. BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS

• Example : Liquid Nitrogen. • Liquid nitrogen has a boiling temperature of - 196°C at atmospheric pressure. Direct contact can freeze the skin causing frostbite and cold burns. Counter measures: • Use cryo-gloves and eye protection. • Adequate ventilation required to prevent build up of vapour. CRYOGENIC LIQUIDS

• Secure gas cylinders at all time (standing/chained/clampe d). • Ensure regulator and gas fittings are compatible and well-fixed. • Never use oil or grease on the gas regulator. • Transport gas cylinder using gas trolley/ carts. • Ensure correct pressure of cylinder gas. CYLINDER GAS

Precautions: • Extension cord is not encourage to be used. Use socket on the wall, as much as possible. • Electrical cords on equipment must be in good condition. No expose inside wire. • Cables used must be within the load. Do not overload! • Avoid contact/near with/to water. • Entangled cables must be straightened and properly binded. ELECTRICAL X X

Potential hazards: • Cuts and crushed fingers. Protection: • Dangerous movable part must be provided with guard. • Concentrate while working. • Regular maintenance – eg : cleaning, sterilizing, etc.. MECHANICAL

• It is the responsibility of waste generator (students or staff) to dispose chemical/biological waste. • Segregate the waste. • Neutralize/ dilute the waste • Pour in the correct waste container (compatible vs incompatible waste)
