please help me welcome them home.

1. Larry & Linda McHugh purchased the previously owned

Griswold home on Abbottsford Terrace. It was quite by accident that
it actually happened. The McHugh’s are great friends with John & Pam
Vecchione. Both couples were standing in the Vecchione’s driveway
talking when Ernie Horvath happened to drive by. They stopped him
and asked if he had any new listings. He did - the Griswold home. So
the McHugh’s jumped in the car and, as they say, the rest is history. You
never know when a sale will be made at Fiddlesticks! Larry and Linda
are from North Andover, MA. Welcome to your new home!

2. Tom & Kathy Caplice acquired their second home in

Fiddlesticks by purchasing the previously owned Brendel home in
Carriedale. They also own a home in The Highlands. Congratulations!

3. Dr. Tracy and Ann Powell purchased the previously

owned Curran property on Gullane Court. They had contractors in and
working the following day. They are from Edina, MN and their daughter,
Margie, will also be living with them. They looked at many properties
at Fiddlesticks before finding the home that they knew was the one for
them. Welcome to your new home!

“My wife, Ann, and I, along with Ann’s daughter, Margie (24) started our “
search last fall to find the perfect golf community. After countless hours of
looking, we drove into Fiddlesticks. It didn’t take long to realize this was the
perfect place for us to develop wonderful friendships and have a beautiful
seasonal home with an amazing view of two golf courses.
The people we have met have been warm and welcoming. The staff has
been extremely helpful and professional. We cannot begin to thank Dianne
Walton enough for the tours, kind words and always being available for us.
Ann, Margie and I can’t wait to meet more of you around Fiddlesticks and

during this time of year. Doing your part will help keep the golf courses
looking and playing their best. Here are a few tips related to golf cart travel:

• Enter and exit fairways at the green posts.
• Avoid driving through areas that may be wet.
• Never drive onto a green, collar, tee, or into any

marked hazard.
• Never drive into any area that has been recently sodded.
• Avoid abrupt stops and sharp turns that cause skidding.
• Spread out wear-and-tear by avoiding compacted areas.
• Watch for special signage or other markers that

direct traffic.
• Avoid driving over sprinkler heads, yardage markers,

and drain basins.
• Do not drive cars into out-of-play areas that may be

environmentally sensitive (such as wildflower beds and
native grass plantings).
• Avoid pulling off the path near tees and greens.
• Keep all four tires on the path whenever possible.

The following was in last month’s newsletter, but we felt compelled to include
it again since we are continually asked about topdressing and verticutting
of the greens. The TIfEagle turf on the greens requires on-going cultural
practices year-round to keep it performing at its best and to also stay as
healthy as possible. The greens are the most important areas on the golf
courses, thus the most time is spent on them. The verticutting helps control
thatch and grain build up while also allowing areas for the sand topdressing
to settle in to. Without verticutting, the greens would be very spongy, soft
and not much fun to play on. The sand topdressing serves several purposes
including helping achieve smooth ball roll, diluting thatch and layering in
the soil profile, increasing proper drainage, and helping to reduce disease
pressure. As the weather cools in the winter and the turf is not as actively
growing, we do reduce the amount the depth with which we verticut and also
the amount of sand used for topdressing. Because of the busy tournament
schedule, the frequency of the cultural practices changes at times as well.
It’s very important to note that without doing these necessary year-round
cultural practices, the greens would not perform as expected and failure
would occur at some point.

Once milder temperatures begin to be the norm, we will start to see insect
pressure. The most prevalent insect will be the mole cricket. These insects
can cause extreme destruction on turf because they feed on the roots at a
very rapid pace. Golfers may see the tufted turf areas and the noticeable
dirt burrows they leave behind. The Golf Maintenance Staff will begin a spot
treatment program where we will treat the affected areas as they present
themselves. A certified contractor will be applying Chipco Choice wall to
wall on the Long Mean on April 24th and on the Wee Friendly on May 1st.

Hip Flexor

Golfers with tight hips often struggle to keep their pelvis stable as they

move throughout their backswing. This can cause a reverse pivot or
improper weight shift to the lead leg in the backswing. A significant
readjustment is usually seen in the downswing in order to have any
chance of making solid contact with the ball. Another symptom of
tight hips occurs in the downswing. A lack of mobility makes the golfer
thrust the pelvis toward the ball and extend the spine too early in the
downswing—known as early extension. This is a death move in the golf
swing. Players will complain of being “stuck” or “trapped” with their
arms in the downswing. This is because the lower body has moved into
the space where the arms need to go.
Try this hip flexor stretch three to four times on each side holding for
thirty to forty seconds with moderate intensity to help increase mobility
in your hips.

Massage Therapy

People get massages for all sorts of reasons, from stress relief to pain

management or a luxurious treat. However, many people don’t realizie all
the benefits that have been linked with massage. You don’t need any fancy
type of treatment in order to see results - with just a regular Swedish
massage your body will see a world of difference. Not only does massage
help with blood circulation, but it also increases your lymph flow which
is your body’s natural immunity to sickness. People know that massage
helps loosen your muscles, but it can also increase joint flexibility, reduce
swelling and release endorphins (our body’s natural painkillers).
There are plenty of psychological benefits of massages as well. Massages
have been shown to lessen depression and anxiety. Many people
experience high stress situations; massage can help manage that
stress. People who regularly have massages show decreased anxiety,
enhanced sleep quality, more energy, better concentration, and increased
circulation.
Research continues to show the benefits of touch, and more areas of the
health care system are embracing massage as a necessary part of their
program, from hospice care to neonatal intensive care units. There’s
no denying that massage goes hand-in-hand with a complete wellness
routine for the body. Massage is a powerful ally to exercise and diet.
Invest in your body and meet with a massage therapist today. Our
massage therapists will listen to your needs and will happily start a
program with you in order to meet your goals.

for one or all. On March 31st and April 1st we will have our first ever Strokes
and Spokes weekend. This two-day event will surely be a crowd pleaser with
a Friday night Fish Fry/Seafood Boil and a community spirit-building walk/
run/bike on Saturday. No need to train intensely or make it to the gym
every morning at 5am to prepare (although by all means, do so). This event
is simply to bring us all together to celebrate community and meet your
neighbors while enjoying some non-competitive sporting interaction. We will
gather outside the Clubhouse on Saturday, March 31st at 10am and begin the
event at 10:30am. Families are welcome, including strollers, wagons, bikes and
scooters. (Please see the Tennis page for more information.) Please remember
to drive slowly in the community on that day to ensure everyone has a great
time and remains safe.

Another first is the Jersey Tenors show on March 1st and 2nd. These talented
guys will give you a little bit of everything from opera, rock, pop, classic
American show tunes and much more. This is a great event for people of
all ages as there will truly be something for everyone. Also in March is our
annual Concert Under the Stars featuring the Naples Big Band. We are excited
to have them join us for an evening of music and dancing under the stars as
they perform for the first time ever here inside the gates.
