RESPEx BACKGROUND

The Malaysian higher education system has grown from strength to strength over
the past few decades and has made significant gains in student enrolment,
receiving global recognition in key dimensions such as research publications,
patents and institutional quality as well as becoming the top destination for
international students. In higher learning institutions such as polytechnic, one of
the main indicators to measure students' performance is the assessment of
student projects and products. Thus, to maintain continuous excellence and to
ensure sustainable education in the higher education system, it is vital to involve
students and lecturers in relevant programs at the regional level.

The first instalment of RESPEx in 2016 saw the submission of more than 90
products from Malaysia and Indonesia.Politeknik Port Dickson represented most
of the Malaysian products while learning institution from Medan, Indonesia
made up for most of the international submissions.

RESPEx 2021 marks the fourth exhibition cementing collaborations between
countries in the South East region namely Malaysia, Indonesia and South Korea.
These three countries had signed a Certificate of Collaboration in 2019 in Politeknik
Port Dickson, Malaysia. The strategic collaboration encapsulates various forms of
collaborative programmes including RESPEx, which is under the purview of DPCCE
(Department of Polytechnic and Community College, Malaysia) and Politeknik Port
Dickson, Malaysia. In addition, RESPEx has always been a co-organised event among
these strategic collaborators.

OBJECTIVES
 To provide a regional competition platform for product innovations
 To identify potential innovation products that can be used by community and

industries
 To capture potential innovation products that can be extended as

content for a research paper

MESSAGE FROM DEPUTY MINISTER
MINISTRY OF HIGHER EDUCATION MALAYSIA
Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh and good day.
Firstly, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the participants of the Regional
Educators' and Students' Product Exhibition 2021 from Malaysia, Indonesia, and
South Korea. Secondly, I would like to thank the organizers for inviting me. It is an
honour to be a part of RESPEx 2021, a momentous event, showcasing innovations
by students and educators in this region.
In the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, innovations are important. How-
ever, many innovators do not have a clear vision and purpose of what they would
do, but only the motivation to do it. Consequently, their projects either would fail
halfway through or at the end of it. We see this quite often with students’ pro-
jects. It does not align with our aspiration which is to see students’ knowledge and
skills consolidated in innovations.
Albert Einstein may have said that it is acceptable to fail as he did fail 99 times,
but he succeeded on the 100th. However, most of us do not have the luxury to fail
99 times. As a student, you have to create workable and usable projects within
one or two semesters. We need to use tested and proven methods to carry out
such assignments successfully. Einstein also shared an effective problem-solving
method. Given an hour to solve a problem, he would spend 55 minutes thinking
about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about the solutions. It is a piece of bril-
liant advice that innovators should heed.
Let me give an example, close to home on how we solve real-life problems. We have been haunted by the
pandemic for more than a year now. The sporadic spread of the virus has caused a pressing demand for the
mosque's committees to carry out the sanitization process at their facilities. In addition, the fire brigades were
overwhelmed by the requests for the sanitization process. During this chaotic situation, a group of Politeknik
Port Dickson students have the clarity of mind and empathy to create a user-friendly and ergonomic
‘Sanitizing Machine’. These machines were improved, replicated, and distributed to mosques and a fire station
in Port Dickson. It was a highly impactful innovation that solves real-life problems. Similarly, innovations from
Indonesia and South Korea attempt to solve the problems of the local communities and industries. Well done
students!
Innovations are game-changers. They can change how a community lives, how companies run their business,
and how a country thrives economically. Therefore, we must take it seriously and come up with innovations
which would solve real-life problems. Therefore, educators have a critical role to play in supervising their stu-
dents’ projects.
The ability to empathize, to put knowledge and skills together, and to put ideas into workable solutions, must
be taught to students in a structured and systematic manner. In a nutshell, educators must master the design
thinking process in order for the students to acquire the skills to carry out their innovative projects. Any inno-
vations must go through the refining process several times before getting an effective product. I must empha-
size that revisiting previously abandoned projects of value and reworking on those are highly commendable.
For a student, it is understood that the thought of doing an innovation can either be overwhelming or insignifi-
cant to be a game-changer. Will these innovations make an impact? That is quite a reasonable perspective.
Therefore, students should always focus on improving the things that they can affect.
I would like to share an inspirational quote by Steve Jobs. He said, “Innovation is the ability to see change as
an opportunity – not a threat”. So, keep innovating! Wishing you all the best in your future endeavours.
Wabillahitaufik Walhidayah, Wassalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Taa’la Wabarakatuh.

YANG BERHORMAT

MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN
FORUM KERJASAMA PENDIDIKAN TINGGI MEDAN

Assalammualaikum wbt.
First of all, I would like to wish a million congratulations to all the committee
members who worked hard in the preparation for the success of RESPEx2021.
The collaboration between the Forum Kerjasama Pendidikan Tinggi Medan con-
sortium and Politeknik Port Dickson has made the program a success even
when it is conducted online. Despite facing global challenges with the pandem-
ic outbreak of Covid-19, this innovation program can still be implemented in
line with the new norms.
As we all know, the world is changing at a rapid pace, topics such as the devel-
opments of industrial world, construction technology and techniques, and vari-
ous subjects in conjunction with the technology had become much more ad-
vanced and sophisticated. In the past few years, innovations which most of us
would deem impossible had become projects which are now invested heavily
and have sparked the interest of multiple experts around the nation as well as
the globe.
Through observation, we can see that technological development does not only drive production improve-
ments, but it also produces a tight competition in the market. Moreover, in recent times, the world’s economics
have shifted towards global economics which makes the competition even tighter. Hence, this program is not
only essential to those individuals who are involved in the technological field, but it is also vital to the research
of sociologists, cultural observers and religious prominent figures.
Many designs and ideas have bogged down in specific facts and examples and forget their connection to the
broader knowledge base. A fine element of a good product conclusion is a suggestion for a future and better
product. As you design your products, you probably noticed some surprising gaps in scholarship on the subject.
These gaps make excellent suggestions for future research as do any new questions raised by our findings. The
many products presented and many new products shown touched on various field of social sciences, environ-
ment, different engineering fields, architectural and economics.
These techniques can also help researchers justify any weaknesses in their design. In the presentations dis-
cussed previously, a conclusion might suggest that researches examine and produce certain suggestions. By
providing these suggestions it gives readers and future researches a clear idea of what questions need to be
answered and also serves to highlight your products contribution to the field. Our panels of judges are those
who have many years of experience and knowledge in their respected fields.
Finally, I would like to say a million thanks to everyone involved in making RESPEx2021 a success this time
around. May all the efforts that have been poured out be blessed. I would also extend my gratitude to
Politeknik Port Dickson for organizing this ceremony to the very last detail successfully.
Congratulations.

MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR-GENERAL
DEPARTMENT OF POLYTECHNIC AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE EDUCATION

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Taa’la Wabarakatuh and good day.

It is my pleasure to extend to all of you a warm welcome to the Closing Ceremony
of RESPEx2021, particularly to the exhibitors from Malaysia, Indonesia and South
Korea.

As you are aware, RESPEx2021 aims at developing a closer working relationship
amongst students and educators in the South East Asia region. It also aims at
sharing and learning best practices for innovation projects, strengthening net-
works for knowledge transfer and supporting students’ mobilization through out-
reach programmes.

RESPEx2021 provides an opportunity for local and overseas experts to exhibit
their innovative products and services by consolidating the knowledge and skills
obtained throughout their tenure in their respective institutions. RESPEx2021 has
attracted the attention of 700 participants from 43 institutions, who submitted
242 innovation products. It speaks volume about the importance of this event in
contributing to the effort to improve lives and livelihood through innovation.

An event such as this should provide us with new insights on the effectiveness
level of an innovative product and the various possibilities to improve it further. It
should also allow us to reflect on whether we have understood and used the cor-
rect process of creating innovation and embraced the various strategies of making
an innovation. Along the way, it also allows us to learn from our own mistakes
and improve the way we do our innovation. In the end, each innovation should
benefit the intended users and change their lives for the better. After all, innova-
tion is not about ideas. It is about making ideas happen.

I am hopeful that all the strategic partners will work towards expanding the col-
laborations with other universities in the region which are highly committed to
sustaining a community-industry-driven innovation approach, thereby bringing
about an effective transfer of knowledge and technological know-how.

On behalf of the Department of Polytechnic Education and Community College,
Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, I would like to express my appreciation to
all the institutions for sending excellent participants to take part in this event.

Welcoming Messages

MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR
POLITEKNIK PORT DICKSON

Alhamdulillah, with God’s grace, we have successfully organized
RESPEx2021.

As the host of RESPEx2021, it is with great honour that I welcome all of you to
the Closing Ceremony of RESPEx2021, conducted online on 28 June 2021.

It is noteworthy to mention that from 2017 until 2018, RESPEX was the acro-
nym for Regional Students’ Projects Exhibition, which was a student-only exhi-
bition. However, in 2019, more educators were interested in participating
hence the change of name to RESPEx (Regional Students’ and Educators’ Pro-
ject Exhibition).

RESPEx2021, which marks its fourth, is organized by Forum Kerjasama Pendidi-
kan Tinggi Medan, Indonesia and co-organized by the Ministry of Higher Edu-
cation Malaysia, Politeknik Port Dickson Malaysia, Ansan University South Ko-
rea, and Technological Association Malaysia (Negeri Sembilan Chapter). The
main strategic partners have always been Politeknik Port Dickson, Forum Ker-
jasama Pendidikan Tinggi Medan, Indonesia and Ansan University South Korea.
Politeknik Port Dickson had formalized the collaboration with both revered
strategic partners in 2019 by signing a Certificate of Collaboration. We

Politeknik Port Dickson is honoured to host RESPEx2021. We view this as an
acknowledgement by our strategic partners that we can host this exhibition. In
addition, I would like to convey my gratitude to each committee member for
investing the time, expertise and talent in co-organizing this event. Over the
years, we have gained the tenacity and confidence to amplify the importance
of this event. More importantly, RESPEx has gradually gained its footing as one
of the innovation exhibition platforms in the higher education system. It is evi-
dent by the significant increase of exhibitors from Malaysia. This year, the ma-
jority of 242 submissions are from Malaysia, and a majority are student exhibi-
tors! Congratulations to all exhibitors!

We will continue to commit to RESPEx because we believe that innovation is
quintessential for the future generation. We believe that the best way to pre-
dict a future is to create and be part of it.
