Uses of the Simple Present
We use the simple present with the following situations:
● An action which takes place on a regular basis
(habitual action).
● Descriptions of facts and general true statements.
● Description of your everyday life
WORDS / PHRASES TO SHOW TIME IN THE PRESENT:
Everyday / night / week / month / year

etc.
Examples:
1. He seldom washes his dishes.
2. They always do their homework.

Forming a Negative
Negatives in the simple present are formed
by adding ‘does not’ (doesn’t) or ‘do not’
(don’t) before the base verb.
Subject + does not/do not + base verb
Statements Negative sentences Shortened negatives
I eat. I do not eat. I don’t eat.
She teaches. She does not teach. She doesn’t teach.
They write. They do not write. They don’t write.
Forming a Question
In the simple present:
• Put ‘DOES’ or ‘DO’ at the beginning of the sentence, and put
the base verb after the subject to form ‘YES/NO’ – questions.
• Put a ‘WH’-question word at the beginning of a ‘YES/NO’-
question to form ‘WH’-questions.
