SPRIN G QUARTER 20 21
ISSUE 6

WELCOME

A letter from our dean, Dr. Marcia Tate Arunga

May 4, 2021
To the Evergreen State College, Sankofa Learning Community;

As the spring quarter goes forward, this is a good time to develop rituals of

completion. For those planning to graduate, the commencement itself is a ritual of
completion. But there are smaller, more intense moments of pause where you
might consider rituals of completion to experienced at the end of every quarter.
This is a time when you reflect on what you have learned, what you are interested

in learning more, and what new things you still need to know. This ritual
acknowledges that who you are today is not the same person as who you were
when we began this term. Our growth is so radical, that unless we take a moment
to pause and praise ourselves for what we have already done, we may not notice.

Sometimes we feel burned out and incomplete, because we forget to pause and
reflect on what we have learned in the last week, month or year. We are moving so
fast (yes, even in COVID times) that we do not take time to fully assess our progress
and achievements. It is important to celebrate and acknowledge your achievements
on a regular basis.

Hopefully you are working diligently now to complete the quarter assignments. As
you deliberate and reflect on your intellectual growth, take time to celebrate your
assignments of personal distinction, the moments when you spoke up and made an
impact; the times when you exceeded our personal best. I suggest you spend the
